Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Instagram in shaping the social practices of local tourism actors at Pasir Panjang Beach, Kei Islands. The research focuses on how tourism stakeholders use Instagram as a medium to produce, distribute, and manage visual narratives about their destination. Employing a qualitative approach through digital observation, in-depth interviews, and content analysis, this study explores how visual representations on social media impact the formation of digital identity, strengthen social relations, and transform the economic strategies of coastal communities. The findings reveal that Instagram functions not only as a promotional tool but also as a symbolic space where tourism actors construct a collective self-image, expand social networks, and articulate economic aspirations grounded in local wisdom. This study offers a novel contribution by integrating theories of digital identity and economic sociology within the context of coastal tourism, an area that has received limited attention in global sociological literature. The findings recommend the development of digital literacy programs sensitive to local cultural contexts to support sustainable tourism practices and empower coastal communities in the digital economy era.

Abstract

This article explores the revitalization of reading culture in Southeast Maluku by highlighting the central role of women and the use of local traditions as learning instruments. The study aims to understand how literacy practices can be revived through culturally rooted, community-based approaches, and to identify the social transformations resulting from such interventions. Employing a qualitative case study method in Tual City, the research involved participatory observation, in-depth interviews with women leaders and cultural practitioners, and narrative analysis of traditional forms used in literacy activities. Findings reveal four key insights: (1) local traditions such as songs, dances, and folktales are creatively adapted as engaging and contextual tools for literacy learning; (2) women’s participation in literacy initiatives has transformed their social roles, enhancing their community status and fostering literacy-based creative economies; (3) youth increasingly view reading as a communal cultural activity rather than a school-based obligation; and (4) a gender-sensitive, culturally grounded literacy model emerged, offering replication potential in similar coastal or island communities. This study’s novelty lies in its integration of local cultural frameworks and gender perspectives in community literacy development, an area often overlooked in formal literacy discourse. It recommends adapting such models to strengthen socially grounded, inclusive approaches in the social sciences and humanities.

Abstract

This article analyzes the roles of families, schools, and village governments in preserving the Wemale language in West Seram Regency, Maluku, with a focus on the unequal contributions among actors and the social stigma attached to the use of local languages. It also examines how community-based programs such as the Community Learning Center (PKBM) serve as spaces for reconstructing local identity through the use of Wemale in informal and nonformal educational settings. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis in villages with active Wemale-speaking communities. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in language use, social perceptions, and preservation strategies by local actors. The findings reveal that families’ role in language transmission has weakened due to modernization, digital influences, and stigma associating the Wemale language with backwardness. In contrast, schools and PKBM demonstrate more active engagement, particularly through alternative learning spaces such as Walang Belajar, which utilize contextual approaches to connect youth with the local language. However, actor coordination remains weak and affirmative policies supporting Wemale as a source of collective identity are absent. This study offers a novel intersection of language, social stigma, and identity politics in Eastern Indonesia while highlighting PKBM’s strategic role in minority language preservation.

Abstract

This article investigates the role of the Ambon City Government in stunting prevention through the lens of collaborative governance and strategic health communication. Drawing on a qualitative political sociology approach, the study explores how municipal authorities integrate diverse actors—including the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN), traditional villages (desa and negeri), health institutions, and non-governmental organizations—into a multi-sectoral governance network aimed at reducing stunting prevalence. The research also examines the city’s use of strategic communication tools such as public service announcements (PSAs), billboards, banners, and community outreach programs to influence public behavior and raise awareness about stunting-related health risks. Findings reveal that effective inter-institutional collaboration, reinforced by culturally resonant and consistent communication efforts, significantly contributes to policy coherence and public engagement. Moreover, the allocation of targeted budgets indicates strong political commitment, enhancing policy legitimacy and implementation outcomes. The study contributes to social science and humanities discourse by offering a context-specific analysis from Eastern Indonesia—an area underrepresented in global governance and public health literature. The integration of governance theory, political sociology, and strategic health communication presents a novel interdisciplinary framework for evaluating public health interventions. It also proposes a replicable model of urban collaborative governance applicable to similarly structured socio-political environments in the Global South.

Abstract

This article examines how digital devices, particularly gadgets, function as symbolic capital in the formation of social identity and digital exclusion among adolescents in Ambon City, Indonesia. The study focuses on two areas with distinct social and geographical characteristics: Batu Merah (urban) and Laha (peripheral). The research aims to analyze the social meanings attached to gadget ownership, investigate the impact of unequal technological access on social exclusion, and explore how gadgets operate as markers of social status among youth. Employing a qualitative approach through phenomenology and mini-ethnography, data were collected via in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was conducted using Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of symbolic capital, habitus, and social distinction. Findings reveal that among Ambonese youth, gadgets serve not only as communication tools but also as indicators of emerging social class. Urban adolescents tend to have greater access to advanced devices and faster internet, reinforcing their dominance in digital interactions, while those in peripheral areas face symbolic and practical exclusion. This study contributes to localized digital sociology by offering a contextual analysis of urban–rural dynamics in Ambon's social structure and highlights the need for social science and humanities research to critically address technological inequalities in Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

This article analyzes the role of the Ambon Peace Gong as a multidimensional space that integrates post-conflict memory, civic education, and community-based tourism. The study aims to understand how this monument is interpreted, managed, and utilized by local communities, visitors, and stakeholders within the broader context of post-conflict social transformation in Ambon, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach and case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis of museum materials and related policies. Thematic analysis was conducted to explore the symbolic, educational, and economic dimensions of the monument. The findings reveal that the Peace Gong functions not only as a reminder of past violence but has also evolved into a social arena that fosters civic values, expands public learning spaces, and creates economic opportunities through tourism rooted in local narratives. The novelty of this study lies in its interdisciplinary approach, viewing the monument as a living site whose meanings and functions are continuously negotiated. This research contributes to the discourse in social sciences and humanities, particularly in the fields of memorialization, peace education, and participatory tourism development, and recommends strengthening community involvement to sustain the relevance and future of peace sites in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines legislative recess practices of Regional People’s Representative Councils (DPRD) as a mechanism mediating state–society relations in subnational Indonesia. It investigates how public aspirations are articulated, filtered, and institutionalized through recess activities, and assesses whether these practices function as substantive democratic mediation or merely symbolic rituals. Drawing on a qualitative case study of the Bali Provincial DPRD, the study employs in-depth interviews with legislators, DPRD Secretariat officials, and community representatives, alongside document analysis of recess reports, meeting records, and regulatory frameworks. Data were analyzed thematically using perspectives from political sociology and governance studies. This article makes three novel contributions. First, it reconceptualizes legislative recess as a form of institutional mediation rather than a procedural extension of legislative representation. Second, it empirically demonstrates the central role of supporting bureaucracies—particularly the DPRD Secretariat—as active mediators shaping the translation of public aspirations into policy outcomes. Third, it advances a relational understanding of subnational democracy by revealing how symbolic representation and material governance processes intersect to reproduce participatory inequalities. The findings show that the effectiveness of recess practices is contingent upon institutional capacity, budgetary constraints, and uneven political literacy. Strengthening mediating institutions and inclusive participation is therefore essential for enhancing democratic governance at the subnational level.

Abstract

This article examines legislative recess as a sociological mechanism that mediates public aspirations within subnational governance, challenging normative assumptions of direct political representation. While public participation is often conceptualized as a linear conduit between citizens and policymaking, this study argues that such participation is structured by institutional procedures, power relations, and administrative constraints. Focusing on legislative recess practices, the research analyzes how public aspirations are articulated, negotiated, and selectively translated into policy-relevant claims. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the study draws on participant observation of recess activities, in-depth interviews with legislators, secretariat staff, and community representatives, and analysis of official documents, including recess reports, legislative proposals, and budgetary regulations. Thematic analysis is employed to capture the institutional dynamics shaping aspiration processing. The findings demonstrate that legislative recess operates as an arena of mediated representation rather than a direct representational channel. Public aspirations are subjected to layered institutional filtering based on jurisdictional authority, budgetary feasibility, and thematic prioritization, resulting in structural selectivity. Aspirations aligned with institutional logics are more likely to be accommodated, while others are systematically marginalized without formal exclusion. The study contributes to sociological theory by reframing legislative recess as a process of institutional mediation and introduces the concepts of mediated public aspirations and institutional filtering to explain representational inequality within democratic governance, particularly in subnational contexts of the Global South.

Abstract

This study examines the extent to which student perceptions shape their participation in the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) internship policy in Makassar, a national higher education reform designed to strengthen work readiness through experiential learning. The research aims to assess the relationship between students’ perceptions of policy content, information access, institutional support, and resource availability and their engagement in MBKM internship activities, while also identifying the most influential perceptual factors. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the study involved active university students who had participated in at least one MBKM program, using two instruments: a four-dimensional perception scale derived from policy implementation theory and the Student Engagement Measure covering behavioral, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. Pearson correlation analysis reveals a positive and statistically significant association between student perceptions and engagement (p = 0.038), although the weak correlation indicates that perception contributes to but does not fully determine participation. These findings suggest that institutional readiness, motivation, accessibility, and prior experience also shape student involvement. The novelty of this study lies in its socio-political lens on MBKM implementation, its empirical linkage between policy perception and engagement, and its integration of policy implementation and student engagement theories. The study contributes to higher education governance and experiential-learning scholarship by demonstrating that policy reception among students is essential for reform effectiveness.

Abstract

This study examines the institutional role of the Legislative Secretariat in facilitating recess-based representation within the local democratic system in Bali, Indonesia. In Indonesia’s decentralized governance framework, legislative recess activities function as an important mechanism through which members of the Regional House of Representatives reconnect with their constituencies to absorb public aspirations and communicate policy developments. While existing studies on local political representation primarily emphasize elected representatives and electoral dynamics, the administrative institutions that support these interactions remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by analyzing how the Session and Legislative Function Facilitation Division within the Bali Provincial Legislative Secretariat supports the planning, implementation, and reporting of recess activities, and how such administrative support contributes to the transmission of community aspirations into local policymaking processes. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with legislative secretariat officials and staff, direct observation of administrative procedures, and document analysis of recess reports and institutional regulations. The findings indicate that the Secretariat plays a crucial mediating role across three stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation and reporting. Administrative coordination, technical guidance, and verification processes ensure that public aspirations gathered during recess activities are systematically documented and incorporated into policy deliberations. The study highlights the importance of bureaucratic capacity in strengthening democratic representation and effective state–society relations at the local level.
