Women’s participation in politics is a critical issue in democratic discourse, particularly in the context of representation and policy. This article aims to analyze the feminization process occurring in ten political parties in Ambon City during Indonesia’s reform era. Using a qualitative approach, this study collects data from interviews, party statutes and bylaws (AD/ART), as well as documents from the Special Committee on the 2017 Election Bill (RUU Pemilu). The findings indicate that the feminization of political parties in Indonesia can be categorized into two forms: responsive and co-optive feminization. The level of feminization within political parties is influenced by three key factors: the number of women in party structures, the implementation of gender quota regulations, and the party’s response to pro-women policies. This study finds that feminization within political parties in Ambon City remains limited, with a strong tendency towards representation but a negative response in terms of policy. Consequently, the feminization that occurs is more symbolic than a substantive transformation in policy-making. These findings contribute to the study of political feminization by highlighting local dynamics within the Indonesian political context, particularly in archipelagic regions. This research recommends the need for more progressive internal party policy reforms to ensure that women’s increased involvement extends beyond structural representation to meaningful participation in political decision-making with broader impacts.

This article explores the intersection of ethnicity, local democracy, and political communication in the context of the 2017 regional election (Pilkada) in Central Maluku Regency, with a specific focus on political mobilization practices in Leihitu District. The study investigates how inter-ethnic relations—particularly between the Leihitu and Seram communities—shaped strategic patterns of political communication in advancing local political interests. Employing a qualitative methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants directly involved in the processes of political communication and mobilization. Findings indicate that ethnic sentiment played a pivotal role in forming strategic alliances between the Leihitu and Seram ethnic groups. Political communication unfolded in three key phases: the establishment of ethnic organizations as platforms for regional autonomy aspirations; elite consolidation during the pre-candidacy phase; and the mobilization of support for the “empty box” option during the campaign stage as a form of resistance to entrenched political dynasties. These practices illustrate that political communication functioned not merely as a vehicle for information exchange, but as a mechanism for collective identity-based mobilization and resistance. This study offers a novel contribution by demonstrating how ethnic-based political communication can reconfigure local political power through the articulation of shared agendas, such as demands for regional autonomy and opposition to dynastic politics. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing ethnic dynamics in local democratic processes, highlighting the need for decentralization policies that ensure social justice and effective political representation at the grassroots level.

This article examines the tourism promotion strategies employed by the Tourism Office of Buton Tengah Regency in marketing the Laulawi Cave tourist attraction, with an emphasis on the role of cultural identity as an instrument in local tourism politics. The study aims to analyze the form and effectiveness of marketing communication strategies used by local authorities and to evaluate the outcomes of the strategic plans implemented. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, direct observation, document analysis, and literature review. The findings reveal that the applied promotional strategies consist of seven main components: advertising, sales promotion, event and experiential marketing, public relations, direct marketing, word-of-mouth marketing, and personal selling. Local cultural identity is positioned as the central attraction across all promotional efforts, highlighting how tourism policy functions as a means of constructing and reinforcing regional imagery. These findings contribute to the broader discourse in social and political sciences, particularly in understanding how local cultural symbols are articulated in tourism destination promotion strategies. The study recommends the importance of integrating cultural narratives with sustainable marketing strategies to support identity-based tourism development.

This article explores the foot-washing tradition (locally known as hobo kadan) as a form of cultural communication within the indigenous community of Leksula Village, Eastern Indonesia. The main objective of this study is to understand the symbolic meanings, social functions, and political relevance of the ritual as it relates to women preparing for marriage, and to assess its role in preserving local wisdom amid the socio-political dynamics of indigenous society. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research involved participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional elders, community leaders, and ritual participants, as well as narrative analysis of the cultural practice. The findings reveal that hobo kadan is not merely a ceremonial ritual, but a symbolic act of social and spiritual transition—marking a woman’s passage from her former life into the ideals of married life. The tradition also reflects social legitimacy through the mutual agreement of two families, functioning as a form of public communication to signal that the marriage process will soon take place lawfully and transparently. In the political context of the indigenous community, this practice reinforces social cohesion, affirms traditional authority structures, and symbolizes resistance to the homogenization of external cultures. The novelty of this study lies in its articulation of hobo kadan as a cultural communication tool that actively contributes to the socio-political stability of indigenous communities. This study recommends formal recognition and protection of local cultural practices in development policy, and advocates for the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into the advancement of social and political sciences—particularly in the study of identity politics, symbolic culture, and political communication in indigenous contexts.

This study aims to examine, analyze, and describe the symbolism and meanings embedded in the Ina Nara Amayali tradition—a customary marriage ritual practiced by the indigenous community of Wetang Island—as a cultural representation rich in social values. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes methods of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The study was purposively conducted in the Wetang Island District, involving key informants such as customary leaders and indigenous community members with deep knowledge of the ritual practices. The findings reveal that Ina Nara Amayali is not merely a matrimonial ceremony but a social structure that governs interactions among extended families and the indigenous community through culturally meaningful symbols. Elements such as red sopi (traditional liquor), two pigs, emas bulan and emas babi (gold items), basta cloth, and lakpona serve not only as ritual components but also as representations of ethical and moral values that shape communal social behavior. The gathering of both families, accompanied by customary figures like Sniri/Mataruma and the customary chief, highlights the embedded social order within the ritual tradition. This study offers new insights into how symbols in local cultures not only represent identity but also function as social binding mechanisms that reinforce communal harmony. The research recommends the preservation of local traditions as vital sources of social knowledge and cultural wisdom, contributing to the advancement of social sciences and humanities, particularly in understanding the relationship between cultural symbolism and the social structures of indigenous island communities.

This study investigates a legitimacy crisis and erosion of trust in student organization leadership by examining declining participation as a critical indicator of internal dysfunction. Focusing on the Indonesian Christian Student Movement (GMKI) Ambon Branch, the research explores how organizational communication failures contribute to weakened leadership credibility. Employing a qualitative methodology, data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews with both members and organizational leaders. Grounded in Stephen P. Robbins’ organizational communication theory, the analysis highlights the breakdown of vertical and horizontal communication, lack of message clarity, weak interpersonal relationships, and the absence of responsive feedback systems. These issues foster psychological distance between leaders and members, diminishing trust and organizational identification. Moreover, strategic ambiguity and value fragmentation further accelerate symbolic delegitimization of leadership, leading to apathy and minimal engagement among members. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of organizational communication theory into the context of student leadership, offering a unique lens to interpret participation decline not merely as behavioral disengagement but as a symptom of deeper structural and symbolic fractures. This research suggests that revitalizing student organizations requires inclusive, dialogical communication models that restore trust and participatory legitimacy in leadership.

This study aims to analyze the adaptive communication strategies employed by Harian Ambon Ekspres through a multiplatform journalism approach in response to the transformation of local media in the digital era. Utilizing a qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis focused on media convergence practices at Harian Ambon Ekspres. The findings reveal that the main strategies include content diversification through the production of radio podcasts, which are subsequently disseminated across both print and digital formats; the use of various digital media platforms to expand audience reach and engagement; and the integration of four key platforms: the Harian Ambon Ekspres print newspaper, E-Paper, Ambonterkini.id, and Ameks.fajar.co.id. Moreover, media convergence has proven effective in reducing production costs and strengthening the competitiveness of the media institution amid technological disruption. The novelty of this study lies in its revelation that convergence functions not only as a technological adaptation but also as a cultural communication strategy that enables local media to remain relevant to the evolving needs and preferences of the public. These findings contribute significantly to the fields of social and political sciences, particularly in media studies, communication, and digital cultural dynamics, and highlight the importance of enhancing the innovation capacity of local media in navigating an ever-changing communication landscape.

This study explores the role of youth in digital and traditional political education within Indonesia’s local democratic context, focusing on first-time voters in Waemulang Village, South Buru Regency. It aims to examine how young community leaders contribute to political awareness through adaptive communication strategies that address both technological developments and local needs. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected via in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that youth play a vital role in educating novice voters, acting not only as information disseminators but also as facilitators of political dialogue and engagement. Their active involvement significantly enhances political awareness among young citizens. Challenges remain, including low digital literacy and limited political interest. However, digital platforms and social media offer strategic opportunities for developing inclusive, interactive political education models. The novelty of this study lies in combining digital and traditional methods of political communication by rural youth—an area seldom explored in Indonesian contexts. The study recommends strengthening youth capacity as agents of social change through community-based political education and digital integration to foster participatory democracy at the grassroots. These insights contribute to social sciences and humanities discourse, particularly in understanding localized political engagement.

This study explores the dynamics of political communication in the appointment and election system of traditional leadership (Raja) in the indigenous community of Negeri Hitumessing, Maluku, as a form of power negotiation within adat structures. The research is grounded in the significance of understanding political communication processes within a sociocultural space that retains strong traditional values while being influenced by modernity. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving community leaders, adat authorities, religious figures, youth representatives, and village officials. Political communication theory and Harold Lasswell’s model serve as the conceptual framework to analyze message transmission, actors involved, communication channels, and the resulting socio-political impacts. Findings reveal that the Raja election functions not only as a contest for authority but also as a symbolic arena for competing group interests. Communication channels are hybrid in nature—oral interactions through informal community networks coexist with digital expressions via social media, particularly Facebook, which facilitates public critique and opinion formation. The election process significantly affects social values, religious practices, and public perceptions of legitimacy. This study contributes a novel mapping of political communication’s role within adat institutions, offering insights for integrating political communication approaches in local leadership studies and strengthening community-based democracy in Indonesia.

This article explores organizational communication strategies within village governance aimed at enhancing community participation in local development. The study focuses on how village governments establish multidirectional communication interactions to strengthen citizen engagement in the planning and implementation of development programs. Conducted in Kataloka Village, Maluku, this research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the success of community participation is closely linked to the effectiveness of organizational communication employed by the village government, particularly in managing the flow of information through vertical (top-down), horizontal (peer-to-peer), and diagonal (cross-structural) communication. Key challenges identified include limited two-way communication channels and low levels of digital literacy among residents. However, efforts to intensify face-to-face dialogue and actively involve citizens in community forums have proven effective in increasing engagement. The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on the integration of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal communication flows as a strategic mechanism to reinforce participatory democracy at the local level. This article recommends strengthening the communication capacity of village governments and developing inclusive communication channels as a contribution to the advancement of social sciences, particularly in the fields of organizational communication and rural governance.
