Abstract

Politeness in language is a crucial factor in influencing pupils' linguistic development and character formation. Consequently, it is imperative to consider the dimension of politeness in pupils' linguistic expressions. This study seeks to delineate the deviations and adherence to the standards of linguistic politeness observed in class discussions among Class VIII students at SMP Negeri 7 Ambon. This study involved 33 kids from the eighth grade. The employed data collection methods included observation, interviews, recording, field notes, and documentation. The research findings indicate two categories of linguistic politeness: compliance with politeness rules and discourse, encompassing four debates with a total of 17 utterances, wherein all forms of maxims were identified. The second category encompasses transgressions from the standards of linguistic courtesy in discourse, categorized into three maxims and three utterances. The research findings indicate that the maxim most commonly violated is that of wisdom and appreciation, observed in breaches of the courtesy principle during discussions among Class VIII students at SMP Negeri 7 Ambon.

Abstract

Expository text comprehension represents a critical component of Indonesian language learning for eighth-grade students in Islamic junior high schools. However, students in class VIII-A at MTs Al-Hilaal Morella demonstrate significant deficiencies in understanding expository texts, primarily attributed to limited instructional diversity and over-reliance on traditional lecture methods. This study investigated the effectiveness of the Jigsaw Cooperative Learning Model in enhancing expository text comprehension among 26 eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Hilaal Morella. Using a descriptive quantitative methodology, data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and assessments. Results indicated that prior to intervention, students achieved an average score of 49.62, well below the minimum passing standard of 70. Following implementation of the Jigsaw model, 24 out of 26 students (92.3%) achieved the minimum passing standard with an average score of 81.73, representing a significant improvement in comprehension outcomes. The findings demonstrate that the Jigsaw Cooperative Learning Model positively influences students' ability to understand expository texts through enhanced peer collaboration, individual accountability, and active learning engagement.

Abstract

This study seeks to enhance the descriptive writing abilities of class VIII-1 students at SMP Negeri 20 Ambon through the utilization of audio-visual media. This study employs the classroom action research (CAR) methodology. The data analysis revealed discrepancies among Cycle I, Cycle II, and Cycle III for the pupils of class VIII-1 at SMP Negeri 20 Ambon. In Cycle I, 21 students failed to reach the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM), resulting in a failure percentage of 95.45% (21/22 × 100%), whereas one student achieved the KKM, yielding a success rate of 4.45% (1/22 × 100%). The mean score achieved in instructing descriptive text writing through audio-visual media for eighth-grade students in class VIII-1 at SMP Negeri 20 Ambon is 44.03. In Cycle II, the outcomes of the descriptive text writing assessment utilizing audio-visual media for VIII-1 grade students at SMP Negeri 20 Ambon indicated that 20 students failed to achieve the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) of 75, resulting in a failure rate of 20/22 × 100% = 90.90%. Simultaneously, two students achieved the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) established by the institution, which is 75, resulting in a success rate of 2/22 × 100% = 9.09%. In Cycle III, three students failed to fulfill the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM), resulting in a failure rate of 3/22 × 100% = 13.65%.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the extemporaneous speaking method on the public speaking abilities of ninth-grade students at SMP LKMD Tawiri, Teluk Ambon District. Using a mixed-methods descriptive quantitative design, the research involved 23 ninth-grade students as participants. Data collection employed questionnaires using the Guttman Scale and performance assessments using structured rubrics with nine evaluation criteria. The study utilized the Product Moment Correlation formula to analyze the relationship between the extemporaneous method implementation and students' public speaking competencies. Results revealed a significant improvement in students' public speaking abilities, with mean scores increasing from 70 (traditional methods) to 78 (extemporaneous method). The correlation coefficient of 1.09 indicated a very strong positive relationship, leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that the extemporaneous method significantly influences public speaking proficiency. The findings suggest that structured extemporaneous speaking instruction can effectively enhance students' oral communication skills in Indonesian secondary education contexts.

Abstract

This study addresses the persistent problem of low summary writing abilities among secondary school students. The research aimed to improve the ability to write summaries of observation report texts (LHO) through implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model among Class VII-A students at SMP Kristen 1 Seram Barat. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, questionnaires, and assignments. The research was conducted over two cycles, focusing on four key aspects: main ideas identification, text structure, diction, and Indonesian spelling (EYD). The study involved 32 Class VII-A students (16 male and 16 female students). Results demonstrated that the PBL model effectively improved students' summary writing abilities, with scores meeting the minimum competency standard of 72. Student performance showed significant improvement from Cycle I (average score of 60) to Cycle II (average score of 80), indicating good category achievement. The findings suggest that the problem-based learning model is particularly effective for teaching observation report text summarization skills in Indonesian secondary education contexts.

Abstract

The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model is a learning paradigm that aims to engage students in critical thinking through the presentation of authentic problems and enhance their learning capabilities. This study aims to examine the influence of the PBL model on the persuasive writing ability of grade VIII students at MTs Negeri 6 Central Maluku. This research employed a quantitative experimental method with a quasi-experimental design. The research procedure was conducted using data collection methods including observation, interviews, learning processes, questionnaires, and documentation. The research population consisted of all grade VIII students at MTs Negeri 6 Central Maluku, with a sample of 60 students divided into experimental class (30 students) and control class (30 students). The research instruments comprised persuasive writing ability tests, observation sheets, and learning motivation questionnaires. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests with SPSS 25.0 software. The results showed a significant difference in persuasive writing ability between the experimental and control classes. The experimental class implementing the PBL model achieved an average post-test score of 52.5, while the control class using conventional methods achieved an average of 48.8. The t-test results showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.005 < 0.05, thus H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. These findings confirm that the PBL model significantly influences the improvement of students' persuasive writing ability by enhancing active engagement, critical thinking skills, and argumentation competencies in Indonesian language learning.
