Abstract

News listening comprehension remains a significant challenge for Indonesian secondary school students, particularly in identifying key information elements systematically. This study aims to enhance the news listening comprehension abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 39 Maluku Tengah through the implementation of the 5W+1H (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How) instructional approach. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology consisting of four interconnected steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection, conducted over two cycles during the 2023 academic year. Participants comprised 17 students from class VIII-2, selected based on their documented difficulties in news comprehension tasks. Data collection utilized multiple instruments including structured observation sheets, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, validated questionnaires, and comprehensive listening comprehension tests featuring authentic news audio materials. Data analysis followed a systematic three-stage process: data reduction, data display, and conclusion formulation, with quantitative test scores analyzed using standardized scoring formulas and qualitative data examined thematically. Results demonstrated significant improvement in both learning processes and academic outcomes. The average test score increased substantially from 57.06 in Cycle I to 82 in Cycle II, representing a 43.7% improvement. Student achievement of the school's Minimum Completeness Criteria of 69 improved dramatically from 29% (5 students) in Cycle I to 82% (14 students) in Cycle II. Qualitative findings revealed enhanced student engagement, improved systematic thinking skills, and increased confidence in news analysis tasks. The 5W+1H method proved highly effective in transforming passive listening into active, goal-directed comprehension activities, providing students with a structured framework for extracting essential information from complex news content.

Abstract

An effective learning method is essential for students to develop writing skills, particularly in poetry composition, which represents a crucial component of the Indonesian language curriculum. This study aims to enhance the poetry writing skills of Grade VIII-A students at SMP PGRI Belis, Teluk Waru District, East Seram Regency, through the implementation of the Example Non-Example Learning Model. Using Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology, this study employed a cyclical process encompassing planning, execution, observation, and reflection across two cycles. The research involved 23 students (8 males and 15 females). Initial results from Cycle I revealed that 14 students (61%) had not achieved the Minimum Competency Criteria (MCC) of 70, while only 9 students (39%) met the criteria. Following the implementation of the example non-example learning model in Cycle II, significant improvement was observed: 20 students (87%) achieved the MCC, while only 3 students (13%) did not meet the criteria, resulting in an average score of 80.21, categorized as "Good" (B). The findings demonstrate that the example non-example learning model effectively enhances students' poetry writing skills by providing clear contrasts between effective and ineffective writing examples, thereby improving students' understanding of poetic elements, structure, and creative expression.

The scanning technique fostered an engaging environment, enabling each student to develop knowledge and experience in quick reading skills. Prior to the implementation of this scanning technique, the average reading speed of 7th-grade pupils at SMP Negeri 81 Maluku Tengah was 35. Following the implementation of this technique in Cycle I, the average score increased to 46, reflecting a 10.8% rise; nevertheless, further improvement is anticipated in Cycle II. The execution of Cycle I had numerous deficiencies, including: 1) pupils continued to struggle with time management, reading velocity, and comprehension proficiency. Only seven pupils achieved the Minimum Competency Criteria (MCC). The deficiencies were rectified in Cycle II. Cycle II results indicated an enhancement in students' reading speed, with a class average score of 75 and 17 pupils achieving the MCC norm. In conclusion, the implementation of rapid reading skills using the scanning technique is highly successful in enhancing students' speaking abilities, particularly their rapid reading skills.

This research study analyzes the varieties and roles of diarki in traditional wedding ceremonies in the hamlet of Rumahlewang Besar, Pulau Wetang District, West Southwest Maluku Regency. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on the words and sentences present in the diarki during traditional wedding ceremonies. This study employs five data gathering techniques: observation, interviews, recording, field notes, and documentation. The employed data analysis procedures include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion formulation. This study's findings reveal the existence of five diarki employed in the traditional wedding ritual of Rumahlewang Besar hamlet, located in the Pulau Wetang District of West Southwest Maluku Regency. Among the five diarchies present in the traditional wedding ceremony, one category of folk song, specifically the lyrical folk song, does not constitute a true diarki: folk songs pertaining to courtship and matrimony. Singing at traditional wedding ceremonies has two functions: it validates cultural norms and institutions, and it acts as a projective system that reflects communal desires. Among these two purposes, the predominant one is the validation of cultural norms and institutions.
