Abstract

Through the study of Virtual Linguistic Landscape (LLV), this descriptive qualitative research aims to explore the contestation of Indonesian language in a virtual multilingual space with Indonesian people as the majority, namely the r/Indonesia subreddit community, within a social media site dominated by English speakers, Reddit. Each of the top-down contents made by the community moderators and bottom-ups made by the community members is observed. The analysis consists of the identification of the language dominance as well as the informational and symbolic functions behind the use of the languages in both types of content to further elaborate the significance of the dynamic. The research found that although members of the community are mostly Indonesian, English dominates all top-down contents. This domination functions informationally as a form of language accommodation while symbolically signifying that positive attitude is more assigned to English than Indonesian language as a status symbol. However, both English and Indonesian language dominate various different bottom-up contents. While the use of both languages also functions informationally as a form of language accommodation, the symbolic functions are more significant. That is, English as a marker of competence within the space designed for niche discussions and Indonesian language as a form of closeness and solidarity among members. Additionally, the use of English in the semi-formal bottom-up content indicates an influence of language choice by the top-down contents.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has triggered governments worldwide, including WHO Indonesia, to use social media as an essential tool for digital education dissemination. In this case, WHO Indonesia uses Instagram to share posters, with a visual emphasis through the use of color in the word 'COVID-19'. This study aims to describe how colors are represented in the word COVID-19 on WHO Indonesia's Instagram posters. This study uses qualitative research. This study was analyzed using content analysis. The results reveal that the word COVID-19 in each poster content uploaded by WHO Indonesia has a variety of colors. The color representations contained in the word COVID-19 are red as a risk warning to smokers, dark orange as sensitivity and empathy for survivors of violence, yellow-gold as a reminder of healthy activities at home, indigo as awareness of body health, teal green as maintaining physical distance, dodger blue as maintaining health during a pandemic, sienna as resilience and fortitude in facing the pandemic, white as preventing the spread of the virus, and dim gray as serious form in facing COVID-19. This study aids in comprehending the reasoning behind the selection of specific colors in the posters utilized by WHO Indonesia in their digital education endeavors regarding COVID-19. It can prove beneficial in designing more impactful health messages and understanding the influence of colors on individuals' perceptions and reactions.

Abstract

This intertextual analysis of the mantras in the Nosaviraka healing ritual does not intend to compare the contents of the Quran and Hadits with the oral text of the mantras because the Quran is a sacred divine word without the intervention of creatures. The study aims to describe the relationship between Nosaviraka healing ritual, the Kaili tribe in Central Sulawesi and the the Quran and Hadits. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with an intertextual approach.  The data source for this research is Nosaviraka healing ritual. The data in the form of the arrays in the mantras were analyzed using the intertextual theory, namely determining the link between the arrays of the mantras and the Quran and Hadits. Based on the research results obtained three findings. First, here is a relationship between the text of the Nosaviraka mantra and the text of the Quran and Hadits. This relationship is shown in all parts of the mantra, namely (a) the initial mantra of agreement, (b) the mantra of summoning ancestors, (c) the mantra of healing, (d) the mantra of salvation, and (e) the mantra of the end. Second, the Nosaviraka ritual mantra as a hypogram, while the text of the Quran and Hadits as the owner of the transformation. Directly or indirectly, the Nosaviraka mantra, the Quran, and the Hadits can be seen from the similarity in structure, but the use of imagination is slightly different in theme. Third, there is a strong tendency that the Nosaviraka mantra is a form of belief in Allah SWT which is associated with the Quran as its hypogram.

Abstract

This study explores syntactic development in first language acquisition in 54-month-old children, focusing on children's linguistic ability to use conjunctions and relative phrases. A multilingual environment may influence syntactic development in these children differently compared to monolingual children. Multilingual children have a wider exposure to various syntactic structures, which allows them more flexibility in understanding and using these structures. Exposure to three languages can enrich the child's vocabulary and improve his/her ability to process linguistic information, which in turn affects the use of more complex syntactic structures. The findings from this study demonstrate the proficiency of a girl exposed to Bengkulu, Serawai and Indonesian languages. The child demonstrated a strong understanding of syntactic structures by scoring an average of 4.34 morphemes per utterance, which places the child's stage of language acquisition at stage V according to her age. This proficiency is likely due to the positive influence of a multilingual environment on the child's language development. This study underscores the importance of early exposure to multiple languages in enhancing syntactic proficiency and highlights the benefits of such exposure on children's language acquisition.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal and examine the variety of Madurese dialects found in 4 districts in Madura (Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep) and their factors, starting from acquisition factors to surrounding environmental factors, as well as their influence on a person's attitude patterns. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. The research subjects that will be studied are the Madurese people in general from each district. The data collection instrument used structured interviews involving 3 people from each district and sources from the literature. The data analysis technique used by researchers is qualitative descriptive. Data analysis includes data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on research results, the diversity of Madurese dialects based on psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic studies is formed through the acquisition factor of Madurese language diversity in the form of vocabulary (dialect) by the human mental lexicon obtained by their social environment. Meanwhile, the diversity of the Madurese language accent is formed from various factors, including cultural, geographical, and social class factors, which influence their attitude patterns.

Abstract

This study delves into the development of critical reading material for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) reading classes through a comprehensive need analysis. Employing the Four D model encompassing defining, designing, developing, and disseminating, the research process unfolded in distinct phases. The initial phase involved a preliminary investigation at the English Language Education Department of Muhammadiyah Purworejo University to discern students' challenges within real-time learning contexts. Subsequently, a prototype of the needs analysis was formulated based on the findings from the preliminary study. Validation of this needs analysis occurred through consultation with two experts and field testing to ascertain the questionnaire's efficacy. The validation process revealed a high feasibility rate (85%) in assessing students' needs. Additionally, a preliminary field test involving 30 students from the English Language Education Department at Muhammadiyah Purworejo University was conducted to evaluate the questionnaire's practicality. The outcomes of the needs analysis served as a foundational framework for the development of critical reading materials, subsequently utilized in EFL reading classes.
