This article examines the role of Istihsan as a method of Islamic jurisprudential flexibility in determining Islamic law, particularly regarding the beginning of the lunar month, and reviews the positions of the four prominent schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Hanbali, and Shafi'i) toward its application. Istihsan, which etymologically means "considering something better," remains a debated method of ijtihad among Islamic jurisprudence scholars (ushuliyyin), although still practically utilized. This study aims to explore how Istihsan functions as a jurisprudential catalyst in the application of astronomical science (Ilmu Falak), especially concerning the determination of lunar months, offering potential solutions for harmonizing differences among the Muslim community. Employing descriptive qualitative methods, the study uses primary sources from fiqh documentation related to Istihsan and astronomy, supplemented by secondary literature. The findings indicate that the Hanafi, Maliki, and some Hanbali scholars accept Istihsan with varying definitions and practical implementations. In contrast, the Shafi'i school rejects Istihsan, considering it as a form of subjective ijtihad lacking strong scriptural justification. Nevertheless, Istihsan serves as a foundation for jurisprudential flexibility, enabling Islamic law to effectively respond to contemporary challenges. Specifically, Istihsan acts as a bridge between the hisab (astronomical calculations) and rukyat (direct lunar observation) methods. It provides adaptive and maslahah-oriented solutions, such as prioritizing hisab in cases of doubtful rukyat, or vice versa, prioritizing rukyat to maintain unity within the community. Practically, Istihsan is exemplified through the Indonesian government's isbat sessions, which require integrated collaboration among scholars, astronomers, and government institutions, always maintaining compliance with definitive (qath'i) texts and public welfare (maslahah mursalah).

Indonesia faces a growing energy demand amid increasing environmental and economic challenges, particularly due to its continued reliance on fossil fuels. While national policies and international commitments have set ambitious targets for renewable energy adoption, implementation at the local level remains limited. This study aims to explore the opportunities and challenges of accelerating renewable energy transition policies in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, using a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving key stakeholders and local communities. The findings reveal that although Lhokseumawe has substantial renewable energy potential and widespread public utility coverage, local efforts are hampered by insufficient funding, regulatory ambiguities, technical capacity gaps, and deeply rooted traditional practices such as informal oil drilling. Nonetheless, positive developments are observed in the form of local energy planning initiatives, public-private partnerships, and increasing community engagement. This research underscores the need for stronger local government authority, innovative financing, and community empowerment to bridge the gap between national policy ambitions and local realities, providing practical insights for Indonesia’s just and inclusive energy transition.

This study examines how religious programs support the development of students’ spiritual character within the framework of the Pancasila Student Profile (Profil Pelajar Pancasila) at MA Wahid Hasyim Balung Jember. Adopting a qualitative case study design, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and validated using triangulation. The findings reveal that activities such as congregational dhuha prayers (shalat dhuha berjamaah), istighotsah (collective supplication), Qur’an recitation (khotmil Qur’an), and hajj rituals practice (manasik haji) have been routinely implemented and play a role in cultivating discipline, responsibility, and empathy among students. These efforts are supported by institutional commitment, teacher involvement, and family participation. However, the process of spiritual value internalization faces several challenges, including variations in student motivation, limited supervision, social and digital media influences, and inconsistent family support. The study concludes that while religious programs contribute to strengthening spiritual character, ongoing collaboration between schools, families, and the community is needed to address existing obstacles and to enhance character education in Islamic schools.

This article investigates how two leading Indonesian online news outlets, Antaranews.com (state-owned) and Tempo.co (independent), frame the issue of sustainable development in Indonesia’s new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN). Employing Robert Entman’s four-element framing model and the Hierarchy of Influences Theory, the study uses a qualitative content analysis of 54 news articles published in January 2025, complemented by in-depth interviews and literature review to triangulate findings. Results show that Antaranews.com frames IKN predominantly through positive narratives, emphasizing government achievements, infrastructure readiness, and inter-agency synergy, while downplaying risks and criticism. This approach reflects its organizational role as a state information agency and is supported by routines that prioritize official sources and state agendas. In contrast, Tempo.co adopts a more critical and pluralistic framing, drawing attention to project delays, policy ambiguities, and potential social and environmental impacts. Tempo.co’s coverage features a broader array of sources, including academics, parliamentarians, and community representatives, reflecting its editorial independence and investigative ethos. The study concludes that differences in framing are shaped by ownership structure, newsroom culture, and broader political and economic contexts. These findings highlight the importance of media pluralism and editorial independence for robust public discourse and effective communication on strategic national projects in Indonesia.

Instilling religious and moral values in early childhood is both crucial and challenging, especially in culturally and religiously rich contexts like Aceh, Indonesia. Many early childhood education centers still rely on traditional teaching methods that are less engaging for young learners. This study addresses the need for innovative, context-sensitive media by developing and evaluating a big book designed to foster courtesy, gratitude, and respect among children at TK Negeri 5 Banda Aceh. The research followed the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. Experts in early childhood Islamic education and educational media validated the content and design. The big book was then implemented with ten children aged 5–6 in classroom sessions, with behavioral changes observed through checklists and qualitative feedback from teachers and students. Expert validation confirmed the big book’s feasibility and relevance, with scores of 71.8% (content expert) and 86.5% (media expert). Classroom trials showed a marked increase in children’s spontaneous use of polite language, expressions of gratitude, and respectful behaviors. The overall group achievement reached 90% on behavioral indicators, and both teacher and student feedback highlighted the book’s appeal and positive influence on daily interactions. This study demonstrates that well-designed big book media can make values education tangible and enjoyable for young children. While the findings are limited to one school and a small sample, they offer practical insights for educators and policymakers interested in strengthening character education through engaging, culturally grounded storytelling. Further research with larger and more diverse groups is recommended to explore the long-term effects and wider applicability of this approach.

The idea of establishing an Islamic state has long attracted the attention of Muslim intellectuals, including Muhammad Iqbal. His proposal for the creation of a separate state for Indian Muslims was inseparable from the socio-political conditions of the time, in which Muslims lived under the dominant influence of Hindu nationalism. This article aims to describe and analyze the concept of the Islamic state from Muhammad Iqbal’s perspective. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study is based on literature review and historical analysis. The findings indicate that Iqbal’s vision of an Islamic state is not theocratic in nature, but rather grounded in Islamic spiritual and ethical values. Such a state, according to Iqbal, must be guided by the Qur’an and Sunnah, with divine law as the highest source of authority and the head of state serving as its executor. Iqbal advocates for a republican form of government, in which the state functions as a vehicle to realize the ideals of tawhid (monotheism), social justice, and individual freedom. His concept seeks to harmonize religion with modernity, and to integrate democracy with Islamic ethical foundations. The article concludes that Iqbal’s political thought contributed significantly to the founding of Pakistan, and offers a relevant model for other Muslim-majority nations striving to implement Islamic principles in state governance, with the ultimate aim of building a just society rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

The digital era has reshaped educational paradigms, requiring innovative approaches across disciplines, including Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at the Madrasah Aliyah level. This study explores the forms and effectiveness of digital innovations implemented in PAI instruction at selected Madrasah Aliyah in Banda Aceh. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis at two public madrasahs. The findings reveal several forms of digital innovation: (1) the use of instructional videos and religious animations; (2) gamified formative assessments via platforms such as Kahoot! and Quizizz; (3) the use of Learning Management Systems like Google Classroom; and (4) limited development of culturally grounded digital content rooted in Acehnese traditions. While these innovations have positively influenced student engagement, comprehension, and digital literacy, implementation remains uneven due to infrastructural limitations, gaps in teacher competence, and insufficient institutional support. The study emphasizes the potential of contextually responsive digital tools to enhance Islamic learning when accompanied by sustained capacity building and systemic support. By highlighting both pedagogical benefits and practical constraints, this research contributes to the discourse on culturally informed, technology-integrated Islamic education.

The abuse of narcotics and other addictive substances poses a serious threat to the sustainability of human resource development, particularly in Aceh Province, where adolescents are highly vulnerable. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Family Planning Village (Kampung KB) empowerment program in fostering a drug-free generation by emphasizing the synergy among education, family, and community roles. This qualitative research was conducted in Banda Aceh and Bireun, utilizing data collected through interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and program documentation. The findings indicate that active involvement of schools, families, youth groups, and community leaders in the Kampung KB program has fostered a social environment conducive to drug abuse prevention. Youth-driven campaign innovations, integration of anti-drug education into formal curricula, and participation of religious and traditional leaders have been effective in strengthening community resilience. However, the program faces challenges, including limited family participation, intersectoral coordination barriers, and social stigma. This study recommends strengthening family and cadre capacity, enhancing cross-sector collaboration, and conducting regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure the effectiveness of community-based drug prevention interventions.

The implementation of Islamic law (Sharia) in Aceh has led to a dual legal system, but its effectiveness is often challenged by a disconnect between the formal legal framework and the community's legal culture. This article argues that a purely legal-positivist approach, which relies heavily on state-enforced qanuns, is insufficient. A more effective strategy requires a responsive legal development model that integrates Sharia with deeply rooted local wisdom. This study, utilizing a descriptive-qualitative approach based on a literature review, examines the potential of the pageu gampong system—a traditional village-level institution for social and moral harmony—as a strategic solution. Our analysis shows that revitalizing pageu gampong can bridge the gap between formal law and community practice by functioning as both a preventive and repressive mechanism. By fostering community participation and leveraging the legitimacy of customary leaders, this system not only addresses the challenges of enforcement but also strengthens public trust and combats the rise of individualism, thereby making Sharia implementation more sustainable and effective

This study investigates the effects of implementing a crossword puzzle-based active learning model in Civics Education (PPKn) at SMA Negeri 2 Indrajaya. Persistent challenges with student engagement and low learning outcomes, often linked to long-standing lecture-based practices, motivated the intervention. Using a classroom action research approach over two cycles, the study involved Grade XI.1 students in collaborative crossword-solving activities designed to reinforce core subject concepts. Results showed that the proportion of students meeting the minimum competency standard increased from 0% at baseline to 60% after the intervention. Classroom observations documented more equitable participation, higher motivation, and improved group collaboration. However, the model did not achieve the targeted mastery threshold of 75%. Several factors—including entrenched passive habits, varying levels of student readiness, and the limited intervention period—contributed to this gap. The findings highlight both the promise and the challenges of adopting active learning strategies in established classroom environments. Sustained teacher support, professional development, and ongoing adaptation will be essential for achieving broader and more durable impacts. Future research should explore long-term outcomes and the effectiveness of active learning models across diverse educational settings.
