Abstract

The secularisation of sacred art in Bali is marked by its performances in various profane spaces and times. Local government regulations have not been able to overcome this problem. Therefore, this study aims to reflect critically on Balinese cultural politics in responding to the secularisation of sacred arts by applying qualitative methods. Data was collected through document studies, namely three policies related to strengthening and protecting sacred art in Bali and analysed using a critical policy analysis approach. This research found that the three policy documents were fragmentary in relation to other discourses. The regulation is also not implemented consistently, especially in relation to tourism. Based on this critical reflection, policies regarding sacred art in Bali need to be developed with a strategic and conceptual thinking (CST).

Abstract

This research aims to determine the priority of sustainable tourism event development strategies in Ubud-Bali with an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The concept of sustainable tourism supported by the Grand Theory Event was used as a foundation in processing in-depth interview data with Penta helix experts, resulting in nine criteria and four alternative strategies. The results showed several strategies to develop sustainable events in Ubud: improving destination image, preserving local culture, increasing global networking, and developing green events. All of these are supported by increasing the network and image of Ubud as an environmentally friendly event destination. The novelty is that the resulting strategic priorities have considered environmental aspects, local culture, and community interests in Ubud. As an implication, the result can be used as a practical guide for tourism stakeholders in developing sustainable tourism events not only in Bali but also in Indonesia and around the world.

Abstract

Balinese is one of 718 local languages in Indonesia facing degradation since national and international language influences are getting stronger in the country. Bali is relatively in a better position than the others because it is supported by its speakers, the governmental laws and costumery laws, and by its own script. This article examines the form of local laws on Balinese language and its script, the implementation of the local laws on Balinese language and its script usage, and factors that determine unparallel law of language between the Balinese Provincial Government and the national government. Observation and questionnaires were applied in the data collection method, while descriptive-qualitative technique was used for the analysis. Both were guided by Language Engineering and Forensic Linguistics approaches. The article concludes that Balinese speakers and the Provincial Government work hand in hand to develop the language and its scripts

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to investigate whether interpretation (Subject-vs-Object control) of an understudied type of control sentence (Sarahi wants someonej [PROi/j] to entertain) depends at least in part on which scenario is most probable. In Study 1, 44 Balinese speakers each rated the relative acceptability of the Subject- and Object-control readings of 272 Balinese sentences of this type. In Study 2, 20 Balinese speakers rated the likelihood of scenarios corresponding to the Subject- and Object-control readings of the sentences from Study 1. Counter to our predictions, however, these ratings did not significantly predict the relative acceptability of the Subject- and Object-control readings from Study 1, apparently because of other, uncontrolled differences between the verbs. We conclude that the question of whether the interpretation of control sentences depends on the relative probability of the scenarios remains unanswered; similar studies in other languages would help resolve this issue

Abstract

Corpus has significantly contributed to dictionary-making. However, despite this high potential, scholars need to pay more attention to the benefits of corpus to junior dictionary development of Indonesia’s local language, i.e., the Balinese language. To fill this gap, the researcher built a 56590 word-sized corpus from the data obtained from published Balinese short stories and children’s songs. AntCont version 4.1.1 software was employed to retrieve words and collocations, focusing on selecting nouns for the junior dictionary entries. The study was the first of its kind to utilise corpus to design a junior dictionary for the Balinese language. Theoretically, this study significantly improved the design of a new corpus-based dictionary for junior users that entails unique and culturally bound words in Balinese. Practically, this study expands the number of dictionaries provided as a source for learning Balinese, primarily for junior users.

Abstract

Translation plays an important role in transferring the data among languages. Thus, translation is not just about translating languages, but also exploring cultures. This can be seen from the translation of traditional Balinese food menus which used to present various names of special dishes as part of Balinese local wisdom. The translation of traditional Balinese food menus is interesting to study since there are no professional translators involved in making it and the emergence of various technical terms are not easy to translate. This research was conducted with a qualitative descriptive method to analyze data and determine the translation strategy by considering the aspects of ingredients, taste, size, process, and shape. The theoretical framework by Newmark (1988) was applied to examine the data. The results of the analysis show that the food menu translation strategy which includes expansion and descriptive equivalent are based on several aspects of food menu translation.

Abstract

A work of architecture has historical significance and serves as a cultural artifact. This work reflects the personality of a specific neighborhood or city. Identity carries a variety of connotations because it is a fundamental and necessary aspect of upholding cultural values and a nation's dignity. Rapid urbanization, on the other hand, frequently results in regional development that is unrelated to the region's historical factors or the sustainability of the region's culture. This paper seeks to establish an architectural precedent for developing a city area cultured as a heritage city by conducting field surveys and graphically analyzing architectural documents, as well as a historical analysis of power relations in the Denpasar urban area, particularly the former Denpasar palace area. In this case, a combination of traditional and colonial architectural styles is used as a design reference and precedent for the future development of urban areas.
