Abstract

In the context of Islamic Religious Education (IRE), accurate scoring techniques not only reflect students’ cognitive achievement but also support character development and the internalization of spiritual values. This study aims to explore in depth the understanding of IRE teachers regarding scoring techniques for multiple-choice and essay-type tests, as well as their implications for the learning process at MTsS Azzanjabil in Bireuen District. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis follows the model of Miles, Huberman & Saldaña (2014), which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal that teachers still rely on conventional scoring methods for multiple-choice tests, assigning fixed scores without weighting or correction for guessing. In contrast, for essay-type tests, teachers demonstrate a more nuanced understanding by considering the difficulty level of questions and the quality of student responses. The scoring practices have shown a positive impact on students’ learning motivation, although they are not yet fully supported by standardized scoring guidelines or rubrics. Teachers’ understanding of scoring techniques has significant implications for the quality of evaluation and the overall learning process in IRE. Strengthening teacher competence through training and the development of structured scoring guidelines is essential to ensure that assessments are conducted more objectively, proportionally, and in alignment with the values of Islamic education.

Abstract

Affective assessment is a crucial component of Islamic education, as it plays a significant role in shaping students’ character and moral values. However, in practice, affective assessment is often overlooked or conducted without a systematic instrument. This study aims to analyze the ability of Islamic Education (PAI) teachers to develop affective assessment instruments at Madrasah Aliyah Syamsuddhuha Dewantara, North Aceh. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through a field study. The subjects were PAI teachers teaching in grades X, XI, and XII. Data were collected using observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and methods. The findings reveal that while PAI teachers are aware of the importance of affective assessment, they still face challenges in designing valid and structured instruments. Some teachers have begun implementing procedures such as formulating indicators, drafting statements, and developing scoring rubrics, but these efforts are not yet consistent. Affective assessment is still predominantly conducted through informal observation, without supporting documentation that can be accounted for administratively. This study highlights the urgent need to enhance teachers’ competence in developing affective assessment instruments. Proper and systematic assessment not only improves evaluation quality but also strengthens the goals of Islamic education in nurturing students with noble character and integrity.

Abstract

Assessment based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and the use of instructional media are two essential components of 21st-century learning. In the context of the Al-Qur’an Hadis subject, both play a vital role in fostering students’ critical, creative, and contextual thinking abilities. However, the implementation of HOTS and instructional media at the Madrasah Aliyah still faces various challenges, particularly in terms of teachers’ understanding and classroom practices. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving Al-Qur’an Hadis teachers at MAS Azzanjabil Bireuen. Thematic analysis was conducted using descriptive-analytical techniques, and data validity was strengthened through source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that teachers have a reasonably good understanding of HOTS and instructional media. They can articulate the principles of HOTS-based assessment and utilize media such as YouTube, laptops, and projectors in their teaching practices. However, the implementation of HOTS questions remains inconsistent due to concerns about student workload and technical limitations. HOTS-based assessment and instructional media should not be viewed merely as technical tools, but as pedagogical strategies that enhance the quality of learning and support teacher professionalism. This study offers both conceptual and practical contributions to the development of Al-Qur’an Hadis instruction that aligns with the demands of 21st-century education.

Abstract

The Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum plays a strategic role in shaping the character, spirituality, and competencies of students across various Islamic educational institutions, including pesantren, madrasah, and public schools. Differences in curricular approaches and structures among these institutions highlight the need for a conceptual study to formulate a more integrative and contextually relevant curriculum development framework. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research methods. Data were collected through a comprehensive review of scholarly literature, policy documents, and relevant previous studies. The analysis was conducted using descriptive-analytical techniques and thematic interpretation to identify patterns, relationships, and conceptual syntheses that support the development of an integrated PAI curriculum. The findings reveal that pesantren curricula emphasize theocentric principles and experiential learning, while madrasah curricula integrate religious and general education within the framework of national policy. In contrast, public schools implement PAI as part of the formal education system through dichotomous, mechanistic, and organismic models. These three approaches hold potential to be further developed into a more holistic and transformative curriculum. This study proposes a conceptual framework for an integrated PAI curriculum that combines Islamic values with scientific knowledge and 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study aims to conceptually examine the development of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) instructional materials using mailing lists as an innovative learning strategy in the digital era. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis, the research explores primary and secondary literature related to instructional material development, digital media, and IRE pedagogy. The analysis was conducted through descriptive, textual, and reflective methods to interpret the meaning, structure, and relevance of mailing list–based instructional content. The findings indicate that mailing lists hold significant potential as an alternative learning medium that facilitates material distribution, religious discourse, and character formation among students. The development of instructional materials via mailing lists can follow the Four-D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), which is adaptable to technological advancements and learner needs. Mailing lists also support digital literacy, independent learning, and active participation in IRE instruction. Thus, the development of IRE instructional materials through mailing lists represents an innovative strategy that not only addresses pedagogical challenges in the digital age but also strengthens students’ spiritual values and character holistically.

Abstract

Learning evaluation is a crucial component of education, including in aqidah (Islamic creed) learning, which emphasizes both conceptual and spiritual understanding. At SD IT Diana As Saffa Islamic, Lhokseumawe City, multiple-choice tests are the primary method used by teachers to assess students’ comprehension. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a descriptive method and a field research design. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews with teachers and students, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing based on the Miles et al. model. The results indicate that the multiple-choice evaluation is considered effective by teachers and positively received by students. Teachers adjust the difficulty level of questions according to grade level, and students feel supported by the post-evaluation discussions. However, challenges were identified in the scoring techniques, including the use of conventional scoring without considering question difficulty levels and the absence of standardized scoring guidelines. Multiple-choice evaluation offers advantages in terms of efficiency and objectivity, but it is not yet fully capable of measuring the depth of understanding and the values of aqidah. Teachers need training in item construction and valid, fair scoring techniques. They also need to adopt reflective and exploratory approaches to better support the holistic goals of Islamic education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at SMA Negeri 1 Gandapura and to identify the challenges encountered in its application. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that PAI teachers have made efforts to integrate HOTS elements in lesson planning through 4C-based lesson plans (Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication) and by applying discussion methods and contextual learning that connect Islamic values with students’ real-life situations. However, the classroom implementation of HOTS still faces several obstacles, including limited teacher understanding of HOTS concepts, low student engagement in critical thinking processes, and inadequate facilities and evaluation systems to support analytical and creative learning. These findings indicate that the implementation of HOTS in PAI is in a transitional phase from conceptual planning to reflective practice. The study recommends strengthening teachers’ pedagogical competencies through reflective training, optimizing technology-based learning media, and developing evaluation systems that foster analytical thinking and moral application in daily life.

Abstract

Financial management in private madrasahs plays a fundamental role in ensuring the sustainability and quality of Islamic education services. This study aims to analyze the implementation, challenges, and strategies of financial management in Indonesian private madrasahs within the context of effectiveness, accountability, and transparency. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, this research employs library-based data collection by reviewing books, scholarly journals, policy reports, and government regulations related to educational financing. The findings reveal that madrasah financial management operates through three main stages: planning (budgeting), implementation (accounting), and supervision (auditing). These stages collectively form the backbone of an effective and efficient financial system. Sources of madrasah funding include government allocations, parental contributions, community support, alumni donations, and waqf institutions. However, private madrasahs face several challenges, such as dependency on limited funding sources, weak accounting systems, and inadequate managerial competence. To overcome these obstacles, madrasahs need to diversify their funding sources, strengthen managerial capacity, and adopt technology-based accounting systems that ensure transparency and accountability. This study concludes that financial management in private madrasahs is not merely a technical or administrative process but also reflects the integration of economic rationality with spiritual ethics, forming the foundation for sustainable and value-driven Islamic educational governance.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the importance of strengthening students’ character through the integration of Islamic values and local culture within the madrasah environment. At MIN 1 Kota Lhokseumawe, the synergy between Islamic principles and Acehnese cultural values serves as a strategic foundation for realizing holistic and context-based character education. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the principal, extracurricular supervisors, and students. Data were analyzed through three main stages: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with validation conducted through source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that the integration of Islamic values and local culture at MIN 1 Kota Lhokseumawe is implemented through four systematic stages: (1) formulation of school policies emphasizing an Islamic character vision and local wisdom; (2) implementation of instructional and extracurricular activities based on Islamic values; (3) internalization of values through social practices, worship, and cultural activities; and (4) continuous evaluation conducted by teachers and the school administration. The model of integrating Islamic and local cultural values has been proven to strengthen students’ holistic character formation, fostering a balance between ḥablum minallāh (relationship with God) and ḥablum minannās (relationship with others). The study also recommends the development of a digital system for documenting and evaluating character-building activities to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of Islamic values implementation in madrasah education.
