Abstract

Critical thinking skills are important for students to have because they can help solve problems more logically. Critical thinking skills are closely related to students' self-regulated learning. To hone critical thinking skills, you can do story problems on set material. The story questions presented in this research are based on the masked puppet art of Malang Regency. This research aims to describe the critical thinking abilities of students who have high, medium and low levels of self-regulated learning in solving set questions based on the wayang mask art of Malang Regency. The approach used is qualitative with a descriptive type. Data collection techniques include questionnaires, tests and interviews. This research was carried out by selecting 3 subjects representing 1 student each from the high, medium and low self-regulated learning categories. The selection of 3 subjects was carried out based on the percentage results obtained from the questionnaire scores which had been distributed to 22 students of Annuriyah Islamic Middle School, Malang City. The results of this study show that there are differences between students with high, medium and low levels of self-regulated learning. Students with high levels of self-regulated learning have excellent critical thinking skills, because students have excellent analytical sharpness and thoroughness. Students with moderate self-regulated learning have poor critical thinking skills, because students are less sharp in carrying out analysis, so this results in a lack of accuracy and results in inaccurate final results. Students with low self-regulated learning have very poor critical thinking skills, because they are still not very sharp in recognizing, so this results in inaccuracy and produces inaccurate final results.

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental research that aims to determine the relationship between metacognitive abilities and students' self-determination in mathematics subjects based on gender. The population in this study were all students in class VIII of Lhokseumawe City Islamic Middle School with a sample of 27 students. Data was obtained from the results of a self-determination ability questionnaire and a metacognitive questionnaire which was then carried out by Spearman correlation testing. The results of the correlation between metacognitive abilities and self-termination obtained a significance value which shows that there is a correlation between metacognitive abilities and students' self-determination in learning mathematics. For the correlation between metacognitive abilities and students' self-determination in learning mathematics in terms of gender using the Spearman correlation test for each gender, correlation values were obtained for males (r_1) and females (r_2). Based on the results of the difference test between the means of two independent groups, a z-count value was obtained which shows that there is no difference in correlation between the two groups.

Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential outcome of the learning process and a crucial tool for knowledge growth. This study aims to analyze the mathematical critical thinking skills of students based on their personality types when solving problems involving literacy and numeracy. A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach was employed. Four informants from the 8th grade, representing extrovert and introvert personality types, participated in the study. Their personalities were identified using the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) non-test instrument. Subsequently, a validated and reliable critical thinking assessment tool was administered. The findings indicate that overall, both extrovert and introvert students can fulfill the four indicators of critical thinking skills proposed by Facione (1990): interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Extrovert students excelled in the interpretation and analysis indicators, demonstrating their ability to comprehend and translate information from problems into mathematical models. However, extrovert students often made mistakes in the evaluation indicator, lacking accuracy in calculations and inferences. Conversely, introvert students met all four indicators of mathematical critical thinking skills and exhibited greater meticulousness, enabling them to answer questions in accordance with their intended purpose. Critical thinking, literacy, and numeracy are three interrelated and inseparable skills. Therefore, students with strong critical thinking skills are more likely to possess proficient literacy and numeracy skills as well.
