Abstract

In an Indonesian-English Dictionary, numerous headwords are found to originate from local languages, especially from Javanese. On the other hand, not all headwords of Javanese origin could be translated into English. To overcome the problem of absence of translation equivalents, consciously or unconsciously, the lexicographer, in this case the translator, would apply strategies in the translation process. Out of the strategies, the tendency of the lexicographer, whether leaning more towards the target or source language, would be revealed. The tendency, furthermore, would show the translation ideology of the translator and the publisher. The object of this research is Echols and Shadily’s Indonesian-English Dictionary, owing to the fact that the dictionary is considered to be the oldest of its type in by the people. The research is limited to the Javanese origin headwords beginning with the letters A and B. Javanese is chosen since it contributes the most to the development of Indonesia dictionary. Meanwhile, the headwords beginning with the two first letters of A and B are chosen to begin the research on the whole headwords of Javanese origin in the dictionary. By using the observation and descriptive methods, 127 headwords of Javanese origin can be found in the dictionary. After being classified and analized, 57% of the headwords are translated through direct translation, 34% through descriptive translation, 5,5% through modulation, 0,8% through idiomatic translation, and 2.3% through adaptation strategy. The translator has changed the point of view from general to particular and vice versa on applying the modulation strategy. Thus, the ideology of the translation that are applied on the 127 Javenese origin headwords with the beginning letters of A and B are domestication. Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the techniques and ideology applied by Chairil Anwar in translating words, phrases, and clauses of John Cornford’s To Margot Heinemann poem into his Huesca translated poem. Thus, the researcher used the following procedures: 1) determining the data sources, data, and translation units to be analyzed; 2) determining the problems and aims of the research; 3) comparing the source text and translated text to identify the techniques that are applied; 4) describing the frequency of overall translation techniques found in the translated poem; 5) calculating the percentage of overall translation technique orientation to determine the translation ideology; 6) drawing the conclusion and proposing suggestion of research. The research shows that 1) Chairil Anwar just applied seven translation techniques i.e. adaptation, amplification, discursive creation, literal, modulation, reduction, and transposition; 2) based on the described frequency, it was found that the seven translation techniques were applied 42 times; 3) there is only one source text oriented - translation technique (foreignizing ideology) namely literal whereas the other six techniques are target language oriented (domesticating ideology); 4) based on the percentage of the seven translation techniques implementation, it was found that the foreignizing ideology was applied 17 times or 40,4% meanwhile the domesticating ideology were applied 25 times or 49,6%. Therefore, the ideology of Huesca poem tends to be domesticating. Finally, it can be concluded that Chairil Anwar’s good quality translated poem was a result of his implementation of quite varied translation techniques with a domesticating ideology tendency. Keywords: Translation techniques, foreignizing ideology, domesticating ideology, source text, Huesca poem.

Abstract

Translation can become a long process, which can begin from pre-translation phase, translation phase itself, and post translation phase. Each phase may also consist of more than one part. One of the parts in the post-translation process is revising, which mainly aims to improve quality of the translation. Nevertheless, the question remains as to what can be revised in the revision of a translation. Therefore, this paper tries to investigate aspects in translation that can be revised by a reviser. This research adopts a qualitative method with a comparative conceptual method, while the source data consists of selected sentences from four English translations of online news articles on the official website of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia. Several sentences from the four papers are randomly selected to be further discussed in this paper. The result of this paper shows that there are at least four aspects that can be revised in the translation of those articles, namely accuracy, grammatical errors, as well as punctuation and typographical errors, and style. Keywords: translation, revision, reviser, online newspaper articles.

Abstract

The Government of Central Kalimantan Province has a singular tradition in welcoming official government guests or delegations. This traditional ritual of the Dayak Ngaju is well-known as “Tetek Pantan”, which symbolizes the cordiality and honor accorded by the Bumi Tambun Bungai – a historical name given to the Central Kalimantan Province and its people – to its visiting guests. This ritual is performed for guests who set foot for the first time in Central Kalimantan Province. Therefore, it will not be performed twice for the same persons on their successive visits. This ritual is led by a Damang or Mantir Adat (Customary Leader) of the Dayak Ngaju in the local Dayak Ngaju language. Therefore, an interpreter assumes a crucial role in delivering the message of the Damang/Mantir Adat from the local language to the the target language (English) of the audience (guests). In this manner, the original message of the speaker can be accurately conveyed to the audience. In this respect, such an interpreter must have the necessary competence and skill to speak as well as to understand the local Dayak Ngaju language. Otherwise, the communication between the speakers will not proceed smoothly. Viewed from the perspective of language as a communication tool, the results of this study demonstrate that the quality of interpretation in this ritual does not merely depend on linguistic features (vocabulary and grammar), but it is also greatly influenced by paralinguistic features (pronunciation, articulation, intonation). In addition to those features, message accuracy should take into account extralinguistic features such as: specialized knowledge, ethnic background, noise, gestures and eye contact which also build strong effects towards the oral interpretation quality. Key words: interpretation, linguistics, paralinguistics, extralinguistics.

Abstract

One of the Dutch Historians argued that the Java War aggravated due to the poor quality of Javanese language ability of the government civil servants. (Fasseur, 1997:91) This article aims to describe the mistranslation activities committed by translators who worked for the colonial government in the period of 1825-1830 that might serve as the proofs of Fasseur’s argument on the Java War. In the article, there is an explanation of the situation during the Java war and the analysis of a sample of translation of a letter regarding Diponegoro taken from the book written by Roorda van Eysinga, Handboek den Land en Volkenkunde, Geschiedtaal, Aardrijks, Staatkunde van Nederlands Indie (1842). The conclusion is that although the translators applied faithful method and cultural equivalent strategy for the translations, they made some mistakes in their translations. The mistakes, thus, caused misunderstanding for the readers. These misunderstandings could have lead to bigger conflict between the Javanese and the Dutch in the Java War. Abstract

Translation is generally understood as an attempt to transfer messages or meaning of the text (in this case poetry) across from the Source Language to the Target Language, so readers who do not speak of the Source Language can understand the messages conveyed by the author. Translating poetry is relatively more difficult compared to translating other literary works since the translators are expected to be able to transfer the message as well as to maintain it’s aesthetic value. The aesthetic value of the poetry from the Source Language is part of the constructive elements which harmoniously form a beautiful poetry. In this regards, a good translator has to deliver a corresponding message and at the same time keep the aesthetic senses of the poetry for the readers. The attempt to maintain the aesthetic elements of the poetry often results in shifts in form and meaning of the poetry. The object of this research is the Anthology of Poetry of Sundel Bolong Njero Sentong by Rini Tri Puspohardini translated from Javanese to Indonesian language by Sosiawan Leak. The objective of the study is to describe the shifts in form and meaning occurred as the result of the translation of this anthology. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. Keywords: poetry, translation, form shift, meaning shift.

The treason in literary translation refers to translator’s subjective efforts to perform any deviation to eliminate any shackles of the language of the source text. Hence, the translated literary work is as close as possible to the characteristics of target readers. Creativity refers to any subjective performance of translator’s artistic scheme fulfilling his or her subjective intention. This article attempts to analyze the translation of William Butler Yeats’-an Irish poet who has won 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature- poem: "The Wild Swans at Coole" through the perspective of creative treason. in translation relating to aspects of personalized translation, omissions, abridged translation and trans-editing, relay translation, and adaptation. The result of the study proved that both poet-translators, Ikranagara and Asrowi, applied creative treason in several poem structures, namely typography, sound, diction, and rhetoric. The treasons carried out by both poet-translators covers three major categories, namely personalized translation-domestication, omissions, abridged translation which reflecs their individual styles.
