Abstract

In order to win a war, one must know its enemy intimately. It goes in a phrase by Tsun Zu as, “to know your enemy, you must become your enemy.” During the periods of colonization, the Dutch authority in the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) had such ideas through its language policy. The Inlandsche Zaken (The first translation agency in the Netherlands East Indies) was established in order to connect two different words, namely the indigenous societies and colonial government in the Netherlands East Indies. The agency was obliged to study the language and culture in the archipelago. During the first five years of the Inlandsche Zaken (also known as Office of Indigenous Affairs), it had showed remarkable achievements in the unification of local vernaculars and the standardization of Malay. In this paper, I provided several analyses on translation of documents from the archives of this agency kept at the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia. The purpose is to examine the differences between two similar documents and analyze them on the basis of translation techniques. Each document contains Dutch texts. They are translated into Malay (Dutch texts in these two documents are similar but the Malay translations are different). These documents were created by the Dutch colonial government. My central research question is, How was the language and translation utilized as a tool of subordination towards the indigenous society in the Dutch East Indies? I applied qualitative method by using literature reviews and archival analysis for answering the research question. The research concluded that the Inlandsche Zaken used both the ability of Indigenous languages and cultural knowledge in translating documents. Through this knowledge and ability, The Inlandsche Zaken had played a determinant role in bridging the two worlds in the Netherlands East Indies-namely, the colonial government and the indigenous societies, as well as helped the colonial government in exercising the colonial authority. Abstract

This paper is aimed at describing note taking in consecutive interpreting as an effort as well as important aid for novice interpreters. Interpreting occurs when one person transfers message orally that he or she hears into another language. This could be done either simultaneously or consecutively. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens to a speech while taking notes. When the speaker has finished, the interpreter stands up and delivers the speech in his/her native language. Note taking becomes the core of the process of rendering message from source language into target language and beneficial to assist interpreters during his/her performance in delivering the message. Several symbols and codes are then used by interpreters. One interpreter to another could probably have different symbols for representing the same item. Conventionally, several symbols are applied by interpreters worldwide. They cover abbreviation of linking words, negation, underlining stressing, symbols of expression, number, movement, correspondence and some other. Nevertheless, according to the practical conditions and making the best use of some basic principles concerning note-taking in consecutive interpreting, the beginners can develop good note-taking skills, which can be regarded as his or her own note-taking system. Keywords: note taking, consecutive interpreting, aids, novice interpreter.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the dissimilar English translation versions of the designation and nomenclature of the Ministry of Transportation. This translation is important due to the Ministry of Transportation’s relations with foreign institutions in international regulation of transportation safety and in economic business. The analysis is conducted with respect to administrative correspondence, officials’ business cards, and other electronic media. The results show that, in fact, everyone, every organization and every institution tend to have its own version of English translation of the designation and nomenclature of the Ministry of Transportation. Hence, there is a necessity for the legality of English translation of the designation and nomenclature of the Ministry of Transportation. Abstract

Poetry translation is relatively more difficult than any other literary translation, since the translator is expected to be capable of sending the message without diminishing the aesthetic value of the source text. To that end, the translator should have an exceptional mastery of both the source and target languages as well as the ability to employ various translating techniques. For this reason, this research deals with an analysis of the techniques used in translating poems from the anthology “Kidung Saka Bandungan”. The aims of this research are to: (1) provide a description and explanation on poetry translation, especially from Javanese into Indonesian; and (2) provide references to translators about the techniques of translation. This research uses the descriptive-qualitative method. The results show that the translator uses some techniques in translating poems, they are the addition, omission, transposition, modulation, culture equivalence, and borrowing techniques. Key words: poetry, translation, technique in translation.

Abstract

This preliminary study aims to gain evidence of literary interpreting through describing the work procedure of juru teges, a traditional profession in mamaca, an oral tradition of Madurese. The study focused on two themes: product and performance, and practice and profession. The performances of three mamaca groups in Sumenep were audio-visually recorded. The data were transcriptions of source and target texts. The source text was both in written and oral form: the written form was a text called Nurbuwat written in Old Javanese language using a modified Arabic writing system; the oral ones were the performances of the reading performers. The target texts were the performances of juru teges in Madurese language. Interviews were also taken to collect additional data on social factors of juru teges. The work of juru teges clearly demonstrates a transference of meaning from one language to another language. Thus, they perform a translating activity. As the work of juru teges only exists during the oral performance, their performancedemonstrates a one-time presentation, thus meets the distinguished nature of interpreting, which is ‘immediacy’ (Pöchhacker, 2001). The juru teges has never used references or read any text during their performance. They rely on their memory instead. In term of memory use suggested by Hale (2003), the work of juru teges could be categorized as an activity of the so called ‘consecutive’ interpreting, which exibits an overlap between translating and interpreting. However, to get a stronger justification, this study may need a further investigation requiring an experiment which will look at the source and target texts solely as linguistic materials. Keywords: translation studies, oral tradition, interpreting

Abstract

Translating online news is a common practice among translators working at government institutions and ministries. Almost all government institutions in Indonesia now have their own official websites and several of them are even available in other languages, particularly English. One of the features of those websites that is usually translated into English is online news articles. Translating online news articles from Indonesian into English poses its own translation difficulties and challenges, including the facts that the original texts (ST) are mostly poorly written, STs that are not clear and sometimes incomprehensible, STs that contain inaccurate data and when those STs have to be translated into English, they have to be ‘modified’ so as to conform to the standard writing of news article in English. Therefore, in this case, a translator has to do more beyond translating. Oftentimes, he has to re-write the articles and produce a proper English news article based on the ST, he has to research missing but important information and he also has to correct incorrect data or information from the original article. Simply put, in the case of translating online news websites, there is blurred line between the concept of ‘translation’ and ‘re-writing’ and this paper tries to investigate whether translating online news articles can be regarded as a ‘pure’ form translation or rewriting. The source of data for this research is taken from news articles of the official website of Cabinet Secretary and their English versions. Several Indonesian articles with their English translations are randomly selected for the analysis of this paper. The result of this paper shows that in many cases of the translation of news article on the website of Cabinet Secretariat, those Indonesian articles are mostly ‘rewritten’ in the Target Text. This paper also concludes that in the case of online news translation, the translator often has to do more than just translating but also rewriting. Abstract

Literary translation is a challenging enterprise because the translator needs to balance between accuracy and conciseness for the sake of beauty. One of the most challenging types of translation unit in literary translation is quotations, especially those which appears in the ST without sufficient information. The challenge lies in the schematic divergence between the ST and TT readers: ST readers can more readily identify the source, meaning, and relevance of the quotation to the narative context, while TT readers cannot. This research was performed to examine the strategies used for translating quotations in a classic novel, as well as the reasons for their application and their impacts on the resulting TT. A number of translation units in the form of quotations and their respective descriptions are proposed as examples. Data consist of ten couples of ST and TT which were taken from Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its Indonesian translation by Ny. Suwarni A. S. Analysis shows that quotations were translated using transference, transference with a footnote, literal equivalent, paraphrase, functional equivalent, and omission, while descriptions were translated using literal equivalent, expansion, synonym, and omission. This research generated several main results. Firstly, translation of quotations is dominated by the ideology of domestication which was employed to reduce the schematic divergence. Secondly, each strategy has its own positive and negative impacts on the TT. For example, omission and paraphrase enhance TT’s coherence and naturalness, but they also eliminate the unit’s characteristic as a quotation and reduce its poetic effect. In conclusion, a translator of quotations in a literry work must take account of various factors, such as schematic gap, poetic effect, exoticism, coherence, and the relative importance of the quotiations. Keywords: literary translation, schematic knowledge, quotation, domestication, foreignization

Abstract

Corpus linguistics has given a significant impact to various kinds of research which studies language, including translation studies. The impact of corpus linguistics to the development of translation studies is marked by the availability of corpora that allow us to study translation as empirical phenomenon and the emergence of corpus-based translation studies. The present paper explores several key concepts in corpus-based translation studies, resulted from the marriage of corpus linguistics and descriptive translation studies. Techniques and methods developed by corpus linguistics are thought to have the capability of extending the scope of translation research and introduce new pattern of thought for translation researchers. For that reason, the present paper discusses the paradigm shifts in translation studies; types of corpora and corpus analysis techniques applied for translation studies; and the development of corpus-based translation studies. The paper is expected to inspire experts in the fields of translation studies as well as corpus linguistics, particularly in Indonesia, to collaborate in developing corpus-based translation studies, which hitherto apparently has not been explored yet. Keywords: corpus linguistics, translation studies, corpus-based translation studies, descriptive translation studies.
