Abstract

Academic procrastination is a common issue that hinders students' academic success and psychological well-being. In junior high school, where self-control is still developing, students are particularly vulnerable to distractions and delay in completing academic tasks. To address this issue, counseling approaches grounded in cultural values may offer effective solutions. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of KIPAS (Intensive Progressive Adaptive Structure Counseling) in reducing academic procrastination in junior high school students. A quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest measurements was employed, involving seven students who exhibited high levels of academic procrastination. The measurement scale used assessed the amanah dimension, which is linked to students' sense of responsibility in completing academic tasks. The results indicated a significant decrease in academic procrastination following the KIPAS counseling intervention, as reflected in the shift between pretest and posttest scores. The Wilcoxon test yielded a Z = -2.429, p = 0.031, suggesting that the change in procrastination levels was statistically significant. These findings support the effectiveness of KIPAS counseling, which integrates local cultural values such as amanah, istiqomah, and iffah, in reducing academic procrastination. This counseling approach fosters students' discipline and responsibility, helping them develop better academic habits. Based on the results, it is recommended that KIPAS counseling be implemented in diverse educational settings to further assess its effectiveness. Schools should consider adopting culturally based counseling approaches to help address procrastination, improve learning outcomes, and enhance students' psychological well-being.

Abstract

The study investigated the psychosocial challenges predictive towards engaging in transactional sex among undergraduates within Ondo State, with the moderating role of demographic variables weighed heavily. Employing a descriptive survey design, data were gathered from 404 undergraduates by means of a validated questionnaire (reliability = 0.86) randomly sampled from two public and two private universities. Amongst the findings from descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses were that peer pressure, financial instability, family dysfunction, and emotional health challenges had significant correlations with involvement in transactional sex while jointly explaining 46.6% of the variance. Financial instability was the strongest predictor, followed by peer pressure, family dysfunction, and emotional health challenges. The moderated multiple regression also found gender, age, academic level, and institution type to be significantly moderating these relationships. Psychosocial challenges affected female students, younger undergraduates, and those at the lower academic levels more, and these associations were weaker for private university students because of more controlled environments and better student welfare systems in place. These factors confirm earlier studies on how socio-economic, cultural, and emotional factors come into play in determining sexual choices for young adults. It can be concluded that transactional sexual practices among undergraduates is a multi-dimensional problem originating from intersecting vulnerabilities and modulated by demographic variables. These findings, therefore, vouch for gender-sensitive programs, early-stage student mentorship, financial empowerment, and institution-based policy reforms in a bid to reduce vulnerability. These results, therefore, have major counseling, policy, and targeted student support program implications for Nigerian higher education.

Abstract

Family violence remains a significant social issue with far-reaching consequences for adolescents, particularly in shaping their behavioural tendencies, including bullying. This study examines the impact of family violence on bullying behaviour among secondary school students in Ilorin Metropolis, which comprises three Local Government Areas (Ilorin South, Ilorin West, and Ilorin East). The study adopts a descriptive survey research design to assess the extent to which exposure to family violence influences students' bullying behaviours, while also considering the role of peer influence. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select 417 students from both public and private secondary schools in Ilorin Metropolis. A structured questionnaire, divided into four sections (demographics, family violence, peer influence, and bullying behaviour), was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts and tested for reliability through a pilot study, yielding a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.89. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics (mean, frequency, percentages) and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation, regression analysis, t-tests, and ANOVA). The findings of the study revealed that family violence and peer influence significantly contribute to bullying behaviour among secondary school students. The majority of adolescents in Ilorin Metropolis experienced moderate levels of family violence, peer influence, and bullying behaviour. Furthermore, peer influence was found to mediate the relationship between family violence and bullying. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions, including school-based counseling programs, parental education on non-violent conflict resolution, and stronger enforcement of anti-bullying policies in schools. The findings also underscore the importance of collaborative efforts among parents, educators, and policymakers to mitigate the effects of family violence and peer influence on adolescent behaviour.

Abstract

Teachers in elementary schools have a strategic role in providing social guidance to students to accept the presence of Students with Disability (SwD). The aims of this study were to determine the social attitudes of students, how teachers provide social guidance for non-disability students regarding the presence of disabled students in class/school and describe the challenges faced by teachers. This study uses a mixed method approach (Quantitative and Qualitative). This research method uses a data collection technique, namely a questionnaire distributed via Google Form to teachers in Indonesia. Through the questionnaire, quantitative data (percentage) and qualitative data were obtained regarding the challenges faced. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis. Respondents in this study were elementary school teachers in inclusive elementary schools. A total of 173 elementary school teachers from 58 districts and cities. The results of the study showed that there were still many social attitudes of students towards the presence of SwD in inclusive elementary schools that were not good. Students are less able to accept the presence of SwD (51%). Most teachers have a way of guiding the form of advice to students (75%). Teachers have difficulty in providing social guidance to students with SwD. In providing social guidance, teachers face challenges of lack of information and teachers' ignorance about children with disabilities; teachers have difficulty in creating guidance models to help students who can’t yet accept SwD, increasing the independence of SwD, lack of training on guidance and counselling for SwD and dealing with parents.

Abstract

This study investigated awareness and perception of artificial intelligence in counselling practice among counsellors-in-training. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population consisted of all counsellors-in-training (CITs) in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. Two hundred (200) counsellors-in-training were randomly selected from Degree three (3) and four (4) as sample for the study. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument to collect data for the study. It was validated by experts in Test and Measurement. Reliability of the instrument was ascertained by using Cronbach’s Alpha statistics mean which yielded a coefficient of 0.83. Data collected was analysed by using frequency counts, percentages and standard deviation. Findings revealed that counsellors-in-training are aware of AI in education and counselling practice which are 87.5% and 61% respectively. The results showed source of awareness among CITs as internet (35%), friends (19%), lecturer (11%) and classmate (4.5%) in succession. The study showed 54% as the level of exposure to AI in counselling practice. Level of perception of usefulness of AI in counselling practice was found as low (43.5%), moderate (52.0%) and high (9%). Level of interest in using AI for counselling practice was revealed as 73% while the limitations of AI for counselling practice are issue of confidentiality (32%), network problem 29%), competence of CITs (23%) and getting consent from the clients (11%). It was therefore concluded that counsellors should work with AI and AI should work with counselling.

Abstract

This study aims to map global trends in self-talk using a bibliometric approach. The data source was entirely drawn from the Scopus database, focusing on publications containing keywords related to self-talk, such as self-talk, talk, and relationship. The analysis was conducted on 960 selected documents published between 1975 and 2025. The results show a significant increase in publications since 2020, reflecting a growing need for self-talk approaches that support mental health and psychological well-being. Authors from various countries contributed differently, with the United States dominating in terms of both publication volume and citations, while developing countries such as Indonesia have begun to show significant participation. However, the findings also indicate that collaboration among researchers and institutions remains limited, highlighting the need to strengthen global scientific networks. Popular topics emerging from this study include impact, talk, self-talk, and anxiety in the context of building mental health. The results of this study make an important contribution to the understanding of mental well-being and the direction of self-talk research at the international level. They also provide a foundation for the development of counseling policies and practices that are more relevant to contemporary social needs. Furthermore, this study encourages further research that incorporates qualitative approaches to explore local contexts and the practical implementation of peace counseling more deeply. Specifically, self-talk as applied in counseling practices has become a crucial aspect in supporting mental health, and therefore its understanding and application need to be continually developed to enhance the effectiveness of counseling services across diverse cultural and social settings.

Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental phase full of challenges, particularly for students from disharmonious family backgrounds who are vulnerable to low self-confidence. This study aims to enhance students’ self-confidence through group guidance services using the sociodrama technique at a public junior high school in Yogyakarta. The research employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The subjects consisted of six eighth-grade students identified as coming from disharmonious families and having low self-confidence. The instrument used was a self-confidence scale that included indicators of belief in one’s abilities, courage to express opinions, and ability to face challenges. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results showed an increase in the average self-confidence score from 46.67 (low category) in the pretest to 71.67 (medium category) in the posttest, with a difference of 25.00. The hypothesis test produced a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between before and after the intervention. These findings demonstrate that group guidance with the sociodrama technique is effective in improving the self-confidence of students from disharmonious families. Thus, the sociodrama technique can be considered an alternative guidance strategy in schools to help students cope with psychological and social problems caused by unfavorable family conditions.

Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence of work stress and its impact on marital stability among married lecturers at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. A descriptive correlational survey design was employed, and 100 married lecturers were selected through a multistage sampling technique across five faculties. Data were gathered using a researcher-designed instrument titled “Work Stress and Marital Stability Questionnaire (WSMSQ),” which demonstrated strong reliability with a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.81. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, independent samples t-test, and one-way ANOVA, were used to analyze the data at a 0.05 level of significance. Results revealed a significant negative correlation between work stress and marital stability (r = –.426, p < .05), indicating that increased work stress is associated with reduced marital stability. However, no statistically significant differences were found in the relationship between work stress and marital stability based on gender, academic rank, or religion. These findings suggest that work-related stress affects marital relationships broadly, regardless of these demographic variables. The study recommends the establishment of faculty-based counselling services, institutional stress management policies, and marital support programs to help academic staff maintain healthy work-life balance. The study uniquely examines the marital implications of occupational stress among Nigerian lecturers, whereas prior studies have focused mainly on occupational outcomes.
