Abstract

Objectives: Effective communication between coaches and athletes constitutes a critical determinant of competitive success in modern sports. English has emerged as the lingua franca of international athletics, yet the specific linguistic features and communicative patterns employed during tactical exchanges remain underexplored. This study investigates how English is utilized for tactical communication in multilingual sports settings and examines the relationship between communication clarity and athletic performance outcomes. The primary objective was to analyze the linguistic characteristics, frequency patterns, and effectiveness of English-language tactical communications between coaches and athletes in competitive environments, with particular emphasis on identifying communication factors that correlate with successful performance outcomes. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed with 156 participants (78 coach-athlete dyads) from 12 different sports disciplines across 8 countries. Data collection involved video analysis of training sessions and competitions (n=234 hours), linguistic corpus analysis of 3,847 tactical communication instances, semi-structured interviews (n=45), and performance outcome measurements. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and ANOVA procedures using SPSS version 28.0. Results: Analysis revealed five primary tactical communication categories: strategic instructions (42.3%), motivational directives (23.7%), technical corrections (18.9%), situational awareness cues (10.4%), and emotional regulation statements (4.7%). Significant positive correlations were identified between communication clarity scores and performance metrics (r = 0.67, p < 0.001). Simplified syntax (mean length utterance = 6.8 words) and sport-specific terminology density (32.4%) characterized effective tactical communications. Native English proficiency showed minimal correlation with communication effectiveness (r = 0.18, p = 0.062), suggesting that functional English competency suffices for tactical contexts. Conclusion: English functions effectively as a tactical communication medium in international sports contexts through simplified linguistic structures, high-frequency sport-specific lexicon, and contextually embedded meaning-making. The study demonstrates that communication effectiveness depends less on grammatical accuracy than on clarity, brevity, and shared understanding of sport-specific terminology. These findings have implications for coach education programs and multilingual athlete development protocols.

Abstract

Objectives: This systematic philosophical literature review examines the conceptual evolution from physical literacy frameworks to human flourishing paradigms in contemporary physical education (PE), analyzing how philosophical foundations have shaped modern pedagogical approaches and their implications for holistic human development. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ERIC, and SPORTDiscus databases (January 2010–August 2025). Search terms combined physical literacy, physical education, human flourishing, eudaimonia, well-being, and philosophical paradigms. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed philosophical, theoretical, and empirical studies examining PE paradigms through philosophical lenses. Two independent reviewers screened 2,847 records, with 56 studies meeting full eligibility criteria for qualitative synthesis. Results: The analysis revealed four dominant philosophical paradigms: (1) capability approach-based frameworks emphasizing human agency and functioning; (2) virtue ethics perspectives connecting physical literacy to character development; (3) phenomenological approaches highlighting embodied experience; and (4) eudaimonic well-being models integrating physical, psychological, and social dimensions. A paradigmatic shift was identified from narrow skill-based competencies toward comprehensive human flourishing, with physical literacy serving as foundational but not sufficient for optimal human development. Integration challenges included conceptual ambiguity, measurement difficulties, and implementation barriers in diverse educational contexts. Conclusion: Contemporary PE paradigms demonstrate philosophical convergence toward holistic human development models, transcending traditional dualistic mind-body separations. Physical literacy emerges as a necessary foundation for human flourishing but requires integration with cognitive, affective, and social domains. Future research should develop integrated frameworks, refined assessment instruments, and culturally responsive pedagogies that honor diverse conceptions of flourishing while maintaining philosophical coherence.

Abstract

Objectives: Sepak takraw is a traditional Southeast Asian sport that combines elements of soccer and volleyball, requiring high levels of flexibility, agility, and coordination. Despite its growing popularity, limited research exists on injury patterns and their relationship with training variables among sepak takraw players. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 210 sepak takraw players from seven clubs in Medan City, Indonesia. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and injury assessment forms over a 12-month period. Training patterns, rest duration, and injury severity were analyzed using quantitative methods. Results: The study revealed that 68.5% of participants experienced at least one injury during the observation period. Lower extremity injuries were most common (72.3%), followed by upper extremity injuries (18.9%). Players with inadequate rest periods (<48 hours between intensive training sessions) showed significantly higher injury rates (p<0.001). Training frequency exceeding 5 sessions per week was associated with increased injury severity (OR=2.34, 95% CI: 1.45-3.78). Conclusion: Training patterns and rest duration significantly influence injury occurrence and severity in sepak takraw players. Implementing structured rest periods and optimized training schedules may reduce injury risk and enhance player safety.
