Abstract

Writing skill is a productive language skills that should be mastered by vocational students. It has become a critical issue in the study of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and a challenging one in Indonesian context in the context of English as Foreign Language learning. This paper aims to investigate the impact of PBworks media application on vocational students’ collaborative writing skill. The research used the experimental approach. The respondents included 60 vocational students selected randomly and divided into two groups with 30 students in the control group and 30 students in the experimental group. The PBworks media was applied in the experimental group, while the control group received face-to-face writing class without incorporating learning media. The data were obtained by comparing student scores in the pre-test and two post-tests. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to obtain the result. It showed that there is a statistically significant difference between using PBworks and non-Pbworks media in regard to the students’ writing performance (p .05). Moreover, vocational students believe in the benefit of the PBworks media application in developing collaborative writing skill despite the disadvantages.

Abstract

Information technology and communication adoption, including social media, remains an interesting research theme in this digital era, especially in a developing country like Indonesia. A survey of principals’ perceptions in Indonesia on the factors that influence the use of social media for instructional leadership serves as the focus of this study. Using a sequential approach, 122 principals responded to the questionnaire which adapted the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) containing six constructs namely perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived attitude, perceived facilitating conditions, subjective norm, and behavioral intention to use technology; and seven of them were interviewed to give further explanations on their perception. The different test was used on for the results of the interview for the quantitative data analysis and thematic analysis. This research finds that the principals’ use of the social media in instructional leadership is considered satisfactory. There is no significant difference regarding the use of social media for instructional leadership based on sex or age, but there is a significant difference based on age in which principals aged more than 50 years have the highest average of TAM. From the interviews, it can be concluded that principals use social media for work to make communication more effective and efficient. The use of social media between the principal and teaching staff proves to be a great way for communication and supervision, not only to report on the teaching and learning process, but also other activities such as administrative reports and financial discussions.

Abstract

Textbook discourse readability is primarily determined by three key factors: the text, the writer, and the reader. Textbook discourse readability from the reader aspect especially among students with poor reading ability is rarely studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate textbook discourse readability among junior high school students with poor reading ability based on gender, reading interest, and family socio-economic status. A quantitative survey was conducted on 257 respondents from Indonesia. The data were gathered using a questionnaire and a cloze test. The results showed that textbook discourse readability on all investigated variables was categorized into the frustration level. There was a significant difference in textbook discourse readability among students with poor reading ability based on gender, reading interest, and family socio-economic status. Female students, students with high reading interest, students with well-educated mothers, students with parents earning more than seven million rupiahs (equals to USD480/month) were reported to have a higher textbook discourse readability. These findings suggest the importance of considering students’ individual characteristics and family socio-economic background in writing a textbook and designing reading instructions in junior high schools.

Abstract

The effectiveness of the 5E Inquiry Learning Model as compared to the teacher-centred traditional method on science achievement in electricity was examined in this study. The quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group research design was utilized. A total of 65 students (33 and 32 students in the experimental and the control groups, respectively) from two Year 5 intact classes in Malaysia participated in this study. A test comprising 54 dichotomously scored items with overall KR-20 reliability of 0.84 was used in the pretest and posttest. Given the significant difference in the pretest and posttest, it was presumed that the analysis could be done using the ANCOVA. However, on further analysis, the assumption for homogeneity of the regression slope was violated and ANCOVA could not be performed. Instead, the covariate was categorized into two equally-spaced categories (i.e., low and average achievers) and further t-test supported the equivalency of the experimental and control groups. When analyzed using the t-test, the two groups differed significantly in the posttest means across the two categories of students. These findings unequivocally indicate the effectiveness of employing the 5E Inquiry Learning Model in enhancing students’ science achievement among the low and average achieving students.

Abstract

The 21st century learning system demands the use of technology in learning instruction. This research focuses on the comparison between the use of android-based-game and blended learning in the Chemistry subject on the hydrocarbon lesson toward students’ self-efficacy and achievement. A quasi-experiment with post-test only design was adopted in this research. A number of 143 eleventh graders from two public senior high schools in Purworejo Regency, Indonesia were selected in a cluster random sampling as the research sample. The sample was classified into three groups depending on the media used, i.e. android-based-game only on face-to-face learning (ABG-FTFL), blended learning only (BL), and both android-based-game and blended learning (ABG-BL). Self-Efficacy Scale (SES) was used to obtain the data of students’ self-efficacy while the hydrocarbon test was used to obtain students’ achievement. One-way Analysis of Variance, Kruskal Wallis test, and descriptive quantity technique were performed in the data analysis, and it is found that the use of these technologies has a significant effect on the students’ self-efficacy and achievement. The use of ABG-BL is better in improving students’ self-efficacy while BL is better in enhancing students’ achievement. Therefore, the use of android-based-game and blended learning can be emphasized as media in chemistry learning to gain better self-efficacy and achievement among students.

Abstract

Rural teacher recruitment and retention has become a common concern globally including in China. In order to understand the underlying reasons that cause rural teachers’ attrition, this study aims to explore the school culture and professional development of the teachers from urban and rural areas of China provinces, by examining three study objectives: teaching location and socio-demographic factor; challenges faced by rural teachers; and strategies to develop teaching professionalism in rural schools. A mixed-method approach involving survey forms and interview sessions was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS and ATLAS.ti which included inferential and thematic analysis. A number of 1547 teachers under Compulsory Education in Jiangxi, China were involved as participants. Results indicated that teaching location is significantly related to the socio-demographic condition. Additionally, five challenges reported by rural school teachers include parental involvement, working environment, salary, personal growth, and family environment. Meanwhile, three main strategies used for professional development are educational beliefs, collaboration relationships, and teacher self-training. The outcome of this study would contribute towards effective and feasible measures to stabilize rural teachers, promote educational and social equity, and promote the integration of urban and rural teachers. Findings conclude the importance to explore further and propose the corresponding measures to improve the working and living status of rural teachers.

Abstract

The latest ‘freedom to learn’ policy, issued by the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, must be implemented by educational institutions at various levels. The principals played significant roles such as community empowerment to utilize all resources in the schools to support the policy. The research aimed to describe the principals’ efforts in improving community participation in the school and to describe the social involvement in facilitating the freedom to learn at schools. This study employed a qualitative approach with a multi-case research design, and it was conducted in Indonesia, particularly in Tana Tidung Regency in North Kalimantan, Bondowoso Regency in East Java, and Malang City in East Java. The data collection techniques included in-depth interviews and document studies, and to validate the data used a credibility technique. The data validation through the credibility technique was carried out by conducting triangulation, checking members, and improving the persistence and adequacy of reference materials. The cross-case data analysis in this study applied a constant comparative method. The analysis was conducted in all three cases resulted in the provisional findings, continued by data comparison that would later be found by the three cases. The results of this research were the principals’ efforts in enhancing community participation through cooperation with several related parties. The principals were regarded as role models in supporting the ‘freedom to learn’ policy and building cooperation with related partners. The kind of community participation varied based on the uniqueness of each region.

Abstract

Jigsaw learning strategy is considered effective in enhancing students’ learning outcomes. Yet, it is problematic for a science classroom that contains educational challenges. The aim of this study was to investigate the implementation of the jigsaw learning in science classes in Indonesian classrooms. This included the feasibility of the jigsaw strategy, the challenges that interfered with the implementations, and the necessary approach to fit the strategy with the challenges. A qualitative case study was used. Three chemistry classes (each consisted of 35 grade 11 students) and a chemistry teacher were involved in this study. Data were collected from classroom observations and interviews. The findings showed that jigsaw learning was not fully feasible as it could not be completely implemented in the participating classes. Unsupportive educational settings such as time limitation, large population, the ill-sized classroom, teacher’s lack of participation and the complexity of the jigsaw structure had influenced the lack of success of the implementations. Rather than seeking help from educational supports that normally involves a financial-concern educational policy, this study recommends adjusting the jigsaw structure to increase its feasibility in such learning condition.

Abstract

A decision-making process in an organization is more effective if it is supported by reliable and valid information systems. Management Information System (MIS) and Decision Support System (DSS) are two systems commonly used by organizational leaders to collect information for making the Quality of Decision (QD). This study aimed to empirically investigate MIS influences on vocational high school principals’ QD. Besides, this study examined the moderation effect of the DSS on the decision-making processes. This quantitative research employed the survey method and purposive sampling technique. As many as 60 vocational high school principals and vice-principals in Yogyakarta, Indonesia were the participants of this study. They filled in questionnaires consisting of 19 items that were developed using the Likert scale. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The research findings show that MIS has a significant effect on the quality of the decision-making process by vocational high school principals. However, for improving the decision quality, the model must be assisted by DSS as the moderator variable. MIS carries information required for principals while DSS provides data, model, and analysis instruments used for special cases in vocational high schools.
