Abstract

Inguinal hernia is the protrusion of an organ, part of an organ, fat, or tissue through the inguinal ring, located between the groin and abdominal muscles. This case study aims to understand the diagnostic methods and management of inguinal hernia in a domestic cat. A three-month-old male domestic cat weighing 1 kg presented with a lump in the inguinal area. After clinical and radiographic examinations, the cat was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia with a favorable prognosis. Treatment was performed surgically using the herniorrhaphy technique to reposition the herniated contents into the abdominal cavity. Before surgery, the cat was given premedication with atropine (V-tropine® 0.02 mg/kg BW SC), followed by anesthesia using a combination of xylazine (xylazine® 1 mg/kg BW) and ketamine (ketamine® 11 mg/kg BW) intravenously. The surgical procedure involved repositioning the herniated contents and modifying the hernia ring to allow tissue adhesion. Layered suturing was performed using polyglycolic acid 3.0 for the peritoneum (simple interrupted pattern), catgut 3.0 for the subcutaneous layer (simple continuous pattern), and silk 2.0 for the skin (simple interrupted pattern). Postoperatively, the cat was administered cefotaxime (cefotaxime® 20 mg/kg BW q12h IM) for three days and tolfenamic acid (tolfedine® 4 mg/kg BW q24h IM) for four days, followed by cefixime (cefixime® 10 mg/kg BW q12h PO). On the eighth day, the cat was declared fully recovered with stable clinical conditions, good appetite, and normal urination and defecation. Surgical intervention using the herniorrhaphy technique proved effective in treating inguinal hernia in domestic cats, ensuring a fast recovery and a high success rate. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications, such as organ strangulation, which can lead to necrosis and systemic infection. Therefore, pet owners need to be more vigilant about the symptoms of inguinal hernia and promptly take their pets to a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment

Abstract

Nematodiosis in piglets can inhibit nutrient absorption, leading to decreased growth performance. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematode infections in piglets during the suckling and weaning phases at pig breeding farms in Gianyar Regency. This was a cross-sectional study with a purposive sampling method. A total of 216 fecal samples from suckling and weaning phase piglets from seven subdistricts in Gianyar Regency were used in the study. Fecal samples were examined using the flotation concentration method with saturated salt (NaCl) to identify nematode worm eggs. Prevalence data were described descriptively, while the Chi-square test was used to determine differences in nematode infection of suckling and weaning phase piglets. The results showed that the prevalence of nematodes was 41.66% (90/216), consisting of Strongyl type (33.33%), Ascaris suum (14.81%), Trichuris suis (6.48%), and Strongyloides ransomi (1.38%). The prevalence of nematode infection in weaning pigs (49.61%, 64/129) was higher (p<0.05) than that in the suckling pigs (29.88%, 26/87). Nematode co-infection in piglets was also observed in this study. The prevalence of nematode infection in piglets is notably high, particularly during the weaning phase of life. Consequently, it is advisable to implement nematode eradication strategies before weaning and to repeat these measures post-weaning.

Abstract

Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic pathogen that causes infection in pigs and has the potential to be transmitted to humans. One of the effective strategies in the prevention of this infection is vaccination, where adjuvant selection plays an important role in enhancing the immune response. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using different adjuvants in S. suis vaccine on primary antibody titers in mice, measured using ELISA assay with supernatant antigen. This study used a factorial complete randomized design with two factors, namely adjuvant type and observation time. Serum samples were collected weekly for four weeks for antibody titer analysis. The results showed that the vaccine with Montanide ISA 201 VG adjuvant produced significantly higher antibody titers compared to the vaccine using Montanide Gel 01 adjuvant and the control group (P < 0.05). The conclusion of this study is that Montanide ISA 201 VG adjuvant is more effective in enhancing primary immune responses than Montanide Gel 01, so it has the potential to be used in the development of a more optimal S. suis vaccine.

Abstract

Diluent is a substance used to maintain and protect spermatozoa during the storage process. Natural-based diluents are still rarely found, making it necessary to develop diluents derived from naturally available ingredients. This study aims to evaluate the effect of palmyra fruit water diluent with the addition of various concentrations of egg yolk and moringa leaf extract on the quality of boar semen. This study used one Landrace boar as the semen source, approximately 1.5 years old, in healthy condition. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design CRD with seven treatments: T0 as the control palmyra fruit water diluent only, T1 palmyra fruit water + 10% egg yolk + 5% moringa leaf extract, T2 palmyra fruit water + 10% egg yolk + 10% moringa leaf extract, T3 palmyra fruit water + 10% egg yolk + 15% moringa leaf extract, T4 palmyra fruit water + 20% egg yolk + 5% moringa leaf extract, T5 palmyra fruit water + 20% egg yolk + 10% moringa leaf extract, and T6 palmyra fruit water + 20% egg yolk + 15% moringa leaf extract. The semen was stored at a temperature of approximately 15-20°C for 48 hours. The observed semen quality parameters included motility, viability, and spermatozoa abnormalities, with each treatment repeated four times. The obtained data were analysed using ANOVA, followed by Duncan's test if significant differences were found. The results of Duncan's test indicated that the T6 treatment produced the best semen quality compared to other treatments, with motility at 59.50±1.291%, viability at 59.25±1.708%, and abnormalities at 7.25±0.500%. It can be concluded that the diluent formulation that resulted in the best spermatozoa quality after 48 hours of storage was treatment T6, composed of palmyra fruit water + 20% egg yolk + 15% moringa leaf extract. Further research is needed to determine the fertility potential of Landrace boar semen diluted with palmyra fruit water extender with the addition of various concentrations of egg yolk and moringa leaf extract to evaluate the effectiveness of the extender in an artificial insemination program.

Abstract

Enhancing the population of Cemani chickens, a native Indonesian poultry genetic resource, requires reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination (AI). This study aimed to analyze the effect of storage duration on Cemani rooster semen diluted with a 20% egg yolk phosphate and 15% sugarcane juice formulation. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with four storage periods (0, 24, 48, and 72 hours) at 5–7°C. Parameters observed included sperm motility, viability, and abnormalities. Results showed a decline in progressive motility from 80.33% (0 hours) to 54% (72 hours), viability from 88.17% (0 hours) to 62% (72 hours), and an increase in abnormalities from 5.17% to 9.33%. Despite the decline, all parameters remained within AI standards (motility >40%, abnormalities <20%) up to 72 hours. This study concludes that egg yolk phosphate and sugarcane juice combination is effective as a low-cost natural diluent for Cemani semen preservation. Further research is recommended to optimize diluent composition for longer storage.

Abstract

The integumentary system is the body's outer defence system that functions as a defence system against temperature, foreign substances, and fungal, bacterial, and parasitic infections. The purpose of writing this article is to provide information about the causes and impacts of Malassezia fungal infections and their treatment. In normal skin function, there is a group of normal microorganisms that grow on the surface of the skin that can be components and indicators in determining skin health. Malassezia fungi are fungi in the form of yeast or mycelium that live in areas of the body that are rich in sebaceous such as the back, chest, and head. A number of diseases that originate from the pathogenicity of Malassezia fungi are interpreted as malasseziosis which causes many symptoms such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, scaly skin, itching. Malassezia infection is interpreted as a decrease in the immune system such as the complement system, cellular immune response, and humoral immune response. The diagnostic method for malasseziosis in dogs requires thorough observation of the distribution of lesions such as alopecia lesions, pruritus, hyperpigmentation, hyperkeratosis, and crusts. The necessary supporting examinations such as Wood's lamp and tape acetate. Morphologically, observations were made using a microscope with a magnification of 1000Χ by observing the results of acetate tape that had been stained with diff-quick by looking at the shape of the Malassezia fungus like a round shoe sole. Post-infection control and treatment were given systemically and topically through the use of oral ketoconazole agents, symptomatic treatment of pruritus with chlorpheniramine maleate, and supportive with fish oil, vitamin CDE, and mineral Z.

Abstract

The broiler industry in Indonesia has grown rapidly since the 1970s and has become a primary source of animal protein. However, the health of vital organs such as the liver, spleen, and kidneys plays a crucial role in broiler productivity. Natural Guard (NG) is a feed supplement claimed to benefit these organs, but research on its safety remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of NG supplementation through drinking water on the health of the liver, spleen, and kidneys in broilers. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used, with four treatment groups: control without NG (P0) and NG supplementation at 1 g/L (P1), 2 g/L (P2), and 4 g/L (P3). Histopathological analysis was performed using Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining, and data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed no necrotic lesions in any group, while congestion and inflammatory cell infiltration were observed at mild to moderate levels without significant differences (P>0.05). This indicates that NG supplementation up to 4 g/L does not cause harmful pathological changes in the liver, spleen, and kidneys of broilers. In conclusion, NG is safe to use as a feed supplement for broilers. Further research is needed to assess its long-term effects and impact on broiler productivity.
