Abstract

Indonesia as a multicultural country has various traditions that reflect social and spiritual values, one of which is the tingkeban tradition in Javanese culture. This tradition is not only a spiritual ritual for the safety of pregnant women and their fetuses, but also a medium for cultural expression through the symbolism of traditional food. This study aims to identify the terms of traditional food and snacks in the tingkeban ceremony and explore the symbolic and cultural meanings contained therein through an ethnolinguistic approach. The focus of the study was directed at the people of Ketapangkuning Village, Ngusikan District, Jombang Regency, East Java, who still maintain the traditional tingkeban practice. By using an ethnolinguistic approach, this study attempts to trace the relationship between language and culture reflected in the lexicon of traditional food as a representation of the values of harmony, balance, and respect for life in Javanese society.

Abstract

Language cannot be separated from human life, humans who act as a role in the formation of civilization produce a masterpiece called culture and local wisdom. This study examines the relationship between the two which is related to the linguistics group. In linguistic studies, there is an approach, namely ethnolinguistics which is used to examine the relationship between language and community culture which produces various meanings of language. Through this approach, the study aims to describe the form of lexicon and toponymy of village names in Mojokerto Regency. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a note-taking technique. The data source used in this study is a book entitled "Jejak Semar di Karang Klethak" by Haris ar-Rachi, et al. The results of the study show that the names of villages in Mojokerto Regency have a historical, mythological background, as well as strong local cultural and natural elements. The naming is closely related to historical figures, community legends, geographical conditions, and the spiritual values of the local community. This proves that village toponymy is not only linguistic, but also reflects local cultural identity which is important to preserve.

Abstract

This article discusses the use of local dialects in short stories and poetry from Central Kalimantan, as well as their impact on the cultural identity of the community. Local dialects, such as Dayak and Banjar languages, serve as crucial elements in folk literature that reflect the life, values, and traditions of the people. Through the analysis of literary works incorporating these dialects, the article demonstrates how dialects not only enrich the reading experience but also function as tools for cultural preservation. The use of local dialects in literature helps strengthen cultural identity and a sense of unity within the community. Despite challenges in the application and publication of literature in regional languages, it is essential to continue supporting the use of local dialects to ensure the cultural richness of Central Kalimantan remains preserved and relevant.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of self-efficacy on students’ interest in continuing their studies to higher education, with achievement motivation as a mediating variable. The research employs a quantitative approach using the survey method. The population in this study consisted of 211 students from SMKN 44 Jakarta. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified random sampling, calculated using the Slovin formula with a 5% margin of error, resulting in a total sample of 138 students. The data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with the assistance of SmartPLS 4.0 software. The analysis process included the evaluation of the measurement model (outer model), the structural model (inner model), and hypothesis testing for direct and indirect effects. The results of the study demonstrate that: (1) self-efficacy has a positive and significant effect on achievement motivation; (2) self-efficacy has a positive and significant effect on students’ interest in continuing their studies to higher education; (3) achievement motivation also has a positive and significant effect on students’ interest in pursuing higher education; and (4) self-efficacy has a significant indirect effect on interest in continuing studies to higher education through achievement motivation as a mediating variable. These findings indicate that both self-efficacy and achievement motivation play important roles in shaping students' educational aspirations beyond secondary school. This study emphasizes the need for educational institutions to strengthen students’ belief in their own abilities and foster achievement motivation to increase their intention to pursue higher education. The findings contribute to the understanding of psychological factors that influence educational planning and can be used as a reference in developing academic guidance programs in vocational high schools.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of self-efficacy and learning environment on learning outcomes, with learning motivation as a mediating variable, among students of SMK Negeri 44 Jakarta. Employing a quantitative approach with a survey method, the research involved a population of 175 students, all of whom were included as the sample through a total sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS 4.0 software. The analytical procedures encompassed measurement model analysis, structural model analysis, and hypothesis testing for both direct and indirect effects. The findings reveal a positive and significant direct effect of self-efficacy on learning outcomes, indicating that students with higher confidence in their abilities tend to achieve better academic performance. Similarly, the learning environment was found to have a positive and significant direct effect on learning outcomes, suggesting that supportive academic surroundings contribute meaningfully to student achievement. However, the study found no significant direct effect of learning motivation on learning outcomes, nor any significant mediating role of learning motivation in the relationships between self-efficacy and learning outcomes or between learning environment and learning outcomes. These results imply that while self-efficacy and a conducive learning environment are key determinants of academic success, the role of learning motivation as an intervening variable may not be as substantial in this context. The absence of mediation suggests that motivation alone may not bridge the gap between personal and environmental factors and actual academic performance. This study contributes to educational research by providing empirical evidence on the complex interplay between psychological, environmental, and motivational factors influencing student achievement, highlighting the need for educators to strengthen both self-belief and learning conditions to optimize outcomes.

Abstract

Mandarin Chinese teaching by non-native teachers is crucial in global education, given the complexity of the language and culture that require in-depth mastery. This study examines the roles, characteristics, challenges, and effective teaching strategies implemented by non-native Mandarin Chinese teachers. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive-analytical literature review, this study collected data from accredited journals and books from online databases such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and national journal portals. The results show that non-native teachers are required to have strong linguistic mastery, comprehensive Mandarin Chinese language skills, a deep understanding of Chinese culture, as well as pedagogical and psychological competencies, including the ability to manage classes and utilize modern technology. Characteristics of effective non-native teachers include sensitivity to observation, critical analysis skills, creativity, good communication, and adaptability. Mandarin Chinese training, such as at LKP AEC Semarang, has proven important to improve the competence of non-native teachers through planned, interactive learning structures and continuous evaluation. A comparison of the effectiveness between native and non-native teachers shows differences; native teachers excel in language mastery and higher student grades, while non-native teachers are more effective in explaining the material in depth with patience. The role of non-native teachers is crucial and integral, encompassing motivator, facilitator, role model, learning designer, and evaluator. Non-native teachers also face challenges such as pronunciation and writing difficulties, limited media resources, lack of confidence, and cultural differences. Solutions include the use of digital media, interactive learning strategies, and professional training. Overall, non-native teachers play a fundamental role in Mandarin Chinese language teaching and have the potential for success. With a strong foundation of materials, innovative strategies, adequate training support, and high self-confidence, they can enhance student interest and understanding, although challenges must be addressed strategically.

Abstract

Writing is a complex and fundamental language skill that plays a central role in developing students’ literacy, particularly in the context of producing negotiation texts. Negotiation texts are one of the text types taught in the Indonesian language curriculum that demand mastery of varied vocabulary, logical coherence, and persuasive language structures. Despite its importance, many students continue to face challenges in composing negotiation texts effectively. Difficulties are often found in choosing the right vocabulary, applying grammatical rules accurately, and constructing arguments that are logically consistent and persuasive. This study aims to analyze the extent to which students’ mastery of Indonesian vocabulary and grammar contributes to their ability to write negotiation texts. The research was conducted on class X students of MAN Kota Mojokerto using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through three techniques: analysis of students’ written negotiation texts, interviews with teachers and students, and classroom observations during the learning process. The results of the study reveal that most students demonstrate limited mastery of vocabulary, which results in repetitive word choices and restricted expression. In addition, weaknesses in grammar application often lead to inaccurate sentence construction, lack of cohesion, and unclear argument flow. These shortcomings significantly affect the quality of negotiation texts, which tend to be less persuasive, poorly structured, and unable to fulfill the standard criteria of negotiation text writing. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that vocabulary mastery and grammar proficiency play a crucial role in supporting students’ negotiation text writing skills. To address this issue, Indonesian language learning needs to adopt strategies that consistently emphasize writing practice, provide opportunities for vocabulary enrichment, and strengthen students’ grammatical competence. Such approaches are expected to improve students’ literacy levels, particularly in the production of negotiation texts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of using the digital educational tool Educaplay on student learning outcomes, specifically in learning the concept of energy sources and their transformations in third-grade students at Brumbungan Lor Elementary School. The main question examined was whether the use of this interactive platform significantly impacts student learning outcomes. The method used was a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were all 17 third-grade students at Brumbungan Lor Elementary School. The research instrument consisted of a pretest and a posttest, consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions structured according to basic competencies regarding energy sources and their transformations. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The analysis showed a two-tailed significance value of 0.000, less than 0.05. This finding indicates that the null hypothesis (H0), which states there is no difference in learning outcomes before and after the treatment, is rejected. Conversely, the alternative hypothesis (H1), which states there is a significant difference after the treatment, is accepted. Thus, the study proves that the interactive learning media Educaplay has a significant impact on improving student learning outcomes. Students experienced improved understanding and academic achievement after participating in learning using this media. This demonstrates that technology integration, specifically Educaplay, can create engaging, interactive learning experiences and motivate students to be more active in the learning process. The final results of the study confirm that Educaplay is a suitable alternative learning media for improving student academic achievement. Therefore, educators and teachers are encouraged to utilize it as part of their learning strategies to support improved student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the kinship between the Sabu, Sumba, and Rote languages, which are regional languages spoken in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Geographically, these three languages are spoken in different areas, originating from three distinct islands, with each having its own unique linguistic characteristics. Based on linguistic classification, the Rote and Sabu languages belong to the Ambon–Timor subgroup, while the Sumba language is classified under the Bima–Sumbawa subgroup. Despite these differences, there are noticeable signs of linguistic kinship, including cultural elements such as similarities in the clan naming system, which suggests a potential historical connection among these languages. To investigate this further, the research gathered data from native speakers of the three languages, who provided verbal samples that were transcribed phonetically. Lexicostatistics was then applied to analyze the vocabulary and determine the percentage of kinship between the languages. This method involves comparing common words in each language and quantifying the level of similarity. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to a clearer understanding of the linguistic relationships between Sabu, Sumba, and Rote. The results will offer insights into whether these languages share a common ancestral root or if their similarities are due to cultural exchange and contact over time. This research also aims to highlight the importance of preserving these regional languages, as understanding their kinship could play a role in the revitalization of linguistic heritage in East Nusa Tenggara. The study's results are anticipated to enrich the field of comparative linguistics, particularly in relation to the Austronesian language family, and provide valuable information for future studies on language development in Indonesia.
