Abstract

Quranic mushaf manuscripts constitute cultural heritage rich in historical, theological, and cultural information, yet public understanding of their significance remains limited. This research aims to analyze the relationship between kiai (Islamic scholars) and the tradition of mushaf manuscript writing in Sumenep Madura, as well as examine the dialectic between religion and culture by positioning kiai as cultural mediators. The study employs a qualitative approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis of mushaf manuscripts from kiai collections and Sumenep community. Hiroko Horikoshi's cultural mediator theory is utilized to analyze the role of kiai in responding to and shaping cultural practices related to mushaf manuscripts. Research findings indicate that the examined manuscripts belong to the 18th and 19th-century categories with distinctive characteristics in paleography, ornamentation, and writing techniques. The religion-culture dialectic manifests in five cultural practices: the tradition of khatam Al-Qur'an (Quranic completion ceremonies), Quranic teaching, the use of the Qur'an as amulets, application of fragrance to mushaf, and beliefs in the mystical value of the Qur'an. Kiai function as cultural mediators who legitimate these practices through theological reinterpretation that accommodates local beliefs without contradicting Islamic teachings. This research reveals that the religious authority of kiai serves as a determining factor in negotiating between Islamic orthodoxy and Madurese local traditions

Abstract

The role of female Islamic scholars from pesantren has expanded significantly into the public sphere, particularly in digital da'wah through social media platforms. In the globalization era characterized by religious misinformation and misunderstanding of Islam, pesantren female ulama have emerged as influential voices in contemporary Islamic discourse. This research examines the strategies employed by pesantren female ulama in digital da'wah and analyzes the prospects of their social media presence. Employing ethnographic field research methodology, this study collected data through documentation, in-depth interviews, and social media observation of three prominent pesantren female ulama: Ning Umi Laila, Ning Sheila Hasina, and Ning Imaz Fatimatuz Zahrah. Data analysis utilized data reduction, data display, and conclusion verification techniques, grounded in da'wah strategy theory and gender equality framework. The findings reveal that pesantren female ulama employ two primary da'wah strategies: sentimental strategy (al-Manhaj al-'Athifi) targeting emotional engagement, and rational strategy (al-Manhaj al-'Aqli) emphasizing logical reasoning. These strategies are adaptively implemented based on audience characteristics, selecting appropriate methods and materials aligned with the cognitive capacity of their followers (mad'u). The prospects of digital da'wah demonstrate significant reach and engagement, with Ning Umi Laila achieving 36.9 million views and 1 million followers, Ning Sheila Hasina reaching 2.3 million views with 611,000 followers, and Ning Imaz Fatimatuz Zahrah obtaining 410,200 views with 350,000 followers. This study contributes to understanding the transformation of traditional Islamic da'wah into digital formats and highlights the strategic role of female religious authorities in contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

The leadership of kiai plays a central role in developing the quality of pesantren education in the contemporary era. This research analyzes the leadership model of Kiai Hodri in improving the quality of Islamic education at Pondok Pesantren Sabilul Muttaqin Daramista, Lenteng, Sumenep. The research focuses on the leadership type, quality development strategies, and the impact of leadership on pesantren educational transformation. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to understand Kiai Hodri's leadership experience in depth. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with Kiai Hodri, ustadz, santri, and pesantren administrators, participatory observation, and analysis of pesantren policy documentation. Data validity was maintained through source and method triangulation, while data analysis utilized data reduction, data display, and conclusion verification techniques. Findings indicate that Kiai Hodri implements a democratic-charismatic leadership model that combines spiritual authority with a participatory approach. Quality development strategies include transformation of the pesantren community's mindset, enhancement of ustadz competence, development of an integrative curriculum, and improvement of technology-based facilities and infrastructure. Kiai Hodri's transformative leadership has successfully produced graduates with independence in science and technology fields, demonstrating the effectiveness of synthesizing traditional pesantren leadership with contemporary educational innovation.

Abstract

This research examines the controversy surrounding the legality of celebrating Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW through a comparative analysis of two prominent medieval Islamic scholars: Imam As-Suyuthi and Imam Ibnu Taimiyah. The Maulid tradition has been practiced since the Middle Ages and remains debated in contemporary Islamic discourse. This study addresses two primary questions: first, what are the respective views of Imam As-Suyuthi and Imam Ibnu Taimiyah regarding the celebration of Maulid Nabi Muhammad SAW; second, how do the argumentative strengths of these two scholars compare in supporting their positions. Employing library research methodology with a descriptive-analytical approach, this study analyzes relevant Islamic literature and classical texts to construct a comprehensive comparison. The findings reveal that Imam As-Suyuthi categorizes Maulid celebration as bid'ah hasanah (commendable innovation), permissible when conducted with praiseworthy activities such as Quranic recitation and salawat upon the Prophet. He distinguishes between bid'ah hasanah and bid'ah dalalah (misguided innovation), arguing that not all innovations are prohibited. Conversely, Imam Ibnu Taimiyah rejects Maulid celebration entirely, categorizing it as bid'ah (religious innovation) that should be avoided. His argument rests on the principle that if Maulid were religiously meritorious, the Prophet's Companions and the Salaf al-Salih would have practiced it. This study contributes to understanding the theological foundations underlying divergent scholarly opinions on Maulid and their implications for contemporary Islamic practice.

Abstract

The dichotomy between religious knowledge and science has become a significant epistemological problem in contemporary Islamic education, hindering holistic development of Muslim scholars. This qualitative library research analyzes the conceptualization and implementation of knowledge integration in pesantren education through the Islamization of knowledge framework proposed by Syed Naquib al-Attas. Using content analysis method on primary literature including seminal works of al-Attas and al-Faruqi, as well as secondary literature on integration practices in pesantren, this study addresses three main questions: how is the concept of knowledge integration constructed, how is it implemented in curriculum and teaching methods, and what are its theoretical and practical implications. The findings reveal that knowledge integration is operationalized through two principles: separating Western concepts contradictory to Islamic values and incorporating key Islamic concepts into modern sciences. Implementation is carried out through ta'dib as educational objective and balanced curriculum integrating religious sciences (fardhu 'ain) with rational sciences (fardhu kifayah). The implications include increased collaboration between religious and scientific knowledge, development of multidisciplinary curriculum producing accomplished students, and transformation of educators' roles into knowledge connectors. This research contributes to the discourse on Islamization of knowledge in contemporary pesantren context and provides frameworks for designing effective knowledge integration programs.

Abstract

The concept of kiai pemimpinan is a kind of social and political control that is derived from several needs. Kiai dengan sosok elitnya, sebagaimana kelimuan dan keahliannya dalam berbagai bidang menjadi sosok yang dijunjung tinggi. The position of the kiai is very sensitive to changes in the political and social spheres. In addition to serving as a resource for the kiai community, it can also be used as a place for consultation. Desa Karangharjo's children are taught to respect strategic locations, not just as people with a deep understanding of religion but also as good citizens who can uphold social and political stability in the event of conflict. This is the point of contention in this study, which is based on the elit theory proposed by Vilfredo Pareto. This study employs a qualitative approach to phenomenon analysis, which is complemented by a deskriptif critical analysis method. Data collection is done by long-term observation, fieldwork, and documentation. On the other hand, the data analysis used is a deskripsi analysis model that is obtained by primary data collection, data analysis, and kesimpulan reasoning. The following are the main conclusions drawn from this research: a) the specific ways in which the community in Desa Karangharjo is involved in social and political matters; in other words, the community is being transformed into social and political consultants. In addition, kiai serves as an eminent religious figure and a specialist in classical consultation; b) the means of reconciliation between kiai and the Desa Karangharjo community is through interactive communication to understand the current situation. In addition, residents of Desa Karangharjo actively participate in social events and programs that are held in conjunction with the community. This is a type of writing that is often used as a euphemism and can be used to develop social structures, particularly in the village of Karangharjo in Silo, Kabupaten Jember.

Abstract

Indonesia is currently confronting a serious moral crisis, marked by a persistent increase in moral degradation among youth and students. Pencak silat, a traditional Indonesian martial art, integrates physical, spiritual, and moral dimensions, making it a potentially effective vehicle for character formation. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have strategically incorporated pencak silat as an instrument for moral development among their students. This study aims to examine (1) the process of moral value internalization through pencak silat activities, and (2) the impact of such internalization on students' moral conduct at Annuqayah Latee Islamic Boarding School. Grounded in Peter L. Berger's social construction theory, this study employs a qualitative field research design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal that moral value internalization is enacted through narrative and philosophical instruction, role modeling and mentorship, as well as habituation and practical application in daily life. Furthermore, this internalization process demonstrably enhances students' emotional resilience, self-regulation, and prosocial behavior. These findings suggest that pencak silat, when embedded in a structured Islamic educational environment, constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy for holistic moral development.

Abstract

The digitalization of kitab kuning (Islamic classical texts) represents a significant phenomenon in the globalization era, transforming pesantren learning traditions. The transition from physical kitab kuning to digital applications is not merely a change in learning media but also a transformation of pesantren traditions that sacralize these classical texts. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of kitab kuning digitalization at Annuqayah Islamic Boarding School, identify underlying factors, and examine its impacts on learning practices. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with Thomas Larsson's globalization theory and Edmund Husserl's phenomenological framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation involving kyai (Islamic scholars), santri (students), alumni, and educators at Annuqayah Pesantren Latee. Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing stages. Results reveal three user groups based on usage intensity: active users (5-7%), less active users, and non-users. Driving factors include accessibility, academic needs, efficiency, and economic affordability. Inhibiting factors encompass limited facilities, pesantren regulations on electronic device usage, and preferences for physical texts. Positive impacts of kitab kuning digitalization include enhanced learning effectiveness and efficiency, convenient reference access, cost savings, expanded religious literature reach, and paper waste reduction. Negative impacts include potential instant mentality, reduced teacher-student interaction, digital transcription error risks, and loss of spiritual experience in reading physical texts. Despite offering various conveniences, the majority of Annuqayah community maintains the tradition of using physical kitab kuning as their primary learning medium.

Abstract

Political diversity among kiai within pesantren institutions remains an underexplored phenomenon in Islamic educational leadership, particularly regarding how such diversity is managed without compromising institutional unity. This study examines the culture of political diversity among kiai at Annuqayah Pesantren, Guluk-Guluk, Sumenep, with three objectives: identifying factors shaping kiai's diverse political orientations, analyzing strategies sustaining institutional cohesion amid political differences, and exploring the relationship between political diversity culture and educational values transmitted to students. A qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Subjects were selected purposively from kiai actively engaged in diverse political activities. Data analysis followed systematic stages of collection, classification, reduction, and conclusion drawing, grounded in Almond and Verba's political culture theory. Three findings emerge. First, political diversity at Annuqayah stems from differences in ideological interpretation, variations in information, and social conformity patterns. Second, kiai manage political differences through cultivating silaturrahim, safeguarding institutional reputation, exercising contextual wisdom, and providing mutual support for kiai in practical politics. Third, political diversity culture is constructively linked to the pesantren's educational mission of cultivating civil society (masyarakat madani) grounded in Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah principles. These findings suggest that political diversity, when managed through institutionally embedded cultural norms, functions as a constructive force for democratic education within the pesantren.

Abstract

Spiritual intelligence has become a critical concern in contemporary Islamic education amid the challenges of modern civilization that increasingly alienate individuals from their spiritual identity. This study aims to examine the implementation of Dalail Al-Khairat recitation as a strategy for developing the spiritual intelligence of female students at Pesantren Annuqayah Lubangsa Utara Putri. Employing a qualitative field research design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive-qualitative techniques. Grounded in Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall's framework of spiritual intelligence, the findings reveal two key conclusions. First, the Dalail Al-Khairat recitation program is a mandatory institutional initiative established by the pesantren caregiver and coordinated by the Ta'mir and Peribadatan division, conducted every Friday Legi from approximately 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. Second, students who participate regularly demonstrate measurable indicators of enhanced spiritual intelligence, including a heightened sense of inner calm in facing adversity, God-centered motivation in daily conduct, full conscious awareness in every action, and a stable set of life principles and values. These findings contribute empirical evidence that structured religious practice, when institutionally embedded within the pesantren curriculum, constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy for holistic spiritual development. This study underscores the strategic role of traditional Islamic devotional practices in addressing the spiritual crisis of contemporary youth.
