Abstract

Background: Student success in achieving academic achievement is influenced by two factors, namely internal factors arising from within the student, such as health, motivation, interest, and learning ability, and external factors arising from the surrounding environment, such as family, social, economic, and campus conditions. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between the written test scores of New Student Admissions (PMB) and the Grade Point Average (GPA) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) scores of vocational graduates of the D3 speech therapy study program. Method: This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational and predictive regression design, involving 39 students. Data were obtained from graduates of the D3 Speech Therapy program and analyzed using SPSS 26 software. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to measure the relationship between PMB written test scores and scores on various final exam components (GPA) and (OSCE). Results: There is a significant positive correlation between PMB and GPA with an r value (37) where rcount > rtable = 0.40 > 0.316, while the p value <  = 0.012 < 0.05. There is no significant relationship between PMB and OSCE, with a value of r (37) where rcount < rtable = 0.10 < 0.316, while the value of p >  = 0.56 > 0.05. However, GPA has a strong positive relationship with OSCE, with a value of r (37) where rcount > rtable = 0.58 > 0.316, while the p-value < α = 0.001 < 0.05. Descriptive statistics show that there is a significant positive correlation between PMB and GPA, but not between PMB and OSCE. Furthermore, GPA has a strong relationship with OSCE, indicating that academic achievement is related to clinical competence. Conclusion: Respondents demonstrated high academic and clinical achievement. There is a moderate positive correlation between PMB and GPA, but no significant relationship between PMB and OSCE. However, GPA is strongly correlated with OSCE, indicating that good academic performance is associated with higher clinical competence.

Abstract

Background: Expressive language impairment is a common problem found in children with dyslogia with condition  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Research shows that this condition significantly impacts communication skills. Difficulties in conveying thoughts, feelings, or needs often make it difficult for children with ASD to interact effectively with their surroundings. The inability to express language optimally not only hinders the socialization process but also affects cognitive development and adaptive skills, and can be frustrating for children. Given the significant impact of expressive language disorders, targeted and comprehensive interventions are needed to improve children's language skills. These interventions can include speech therapy, the use of visual media, language modeling, and alternative and augmentative communication strategies. Objective: This study aims to determine whether the Natural Language Paradigm method can improve expressive language skills. The method used a single-subject quasi-experimental design, A1-B-A2. A1 was the pretest before the intervention. B was the intervention, and A2 was the posttest after 10 sessions of intervention using the Natural Language Paradigm. Results: After 10 sessions of therapy, the intervention demonstrated moderate success. Conclusion: The 10 sessions of intervention using the Natural Language Paradigm were quite successful in improving expressive language skills.

Abstract

Background: Communication is very important in a person's life to be able to express what they want, so that they can communicate with their interlocutors, both verbally and non-verbally. Communication can be hampered due to certain disorders, one of which is autism. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder in which there are problems with cognition, social emotions, behavior, difficulty interacting with others, and a greater interest in one's own world. Limitations in social and cognitive interactions can affect quality of life. Objective: The objective is to obtain an overview of speech language abilities in autism and to determine the application of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) method in autism spectrum disorder. Method: This study used a single-subject experiment or Single Subject Research. The participant was a 6-year-old boy. Data collection was conducted through interviews with the client's parents, direct observation of the client, tests, and document studies. Results: The client's diagnosis is autism spectrum disorder, speech impairment, auditory perception impairment, and motor delay. The use of the PECS method to improve verbal communication skills was unsuccessful. Conclusion: The importance of awareness and early intervention for disorders in children. Recommendation: It is necessary to pay attention to the planning of therapy implementation, including the materials used, therapy variations, and the client's condition, in order to achieve optimal therapy outcomes.

Data collection was conducted through pre-test as baseline (A1), Intervention as baseline (B) ang post-test as baseline (A2). Results: The intervention was conducted during 10 therapy session and consisted of reading bacward indicating improvement. Visual analysis revealed a stable and consistent downtrend in symptom of latah. Conclusion: This emphasizes the importance of appropriate intervention in addressing effective interventions for language rehabilitation in patients with latah rhythm disorders.

Abstract

Background: Unilateral Upper Motor Neuron (UUMN) dysarthria is a type of dysarthria characterized by damage to the upper motor neurons, causing articulation disorders as the most dominant symptom. Speech therapy intervention is essential in this condition. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Phonetic Placement method in improving articulation skills in patients with UUMN dysarthria. Methods: This study used a single-subject experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The research subject was a 51-year-old woman with a history of UUMN dysarthria. The intervention was conducted over 10 sessions using the Phonetic Placement method, which focused on word-level articulation exercises. Perceptual assessment was conducted to evaluate articulation clarity by comparing abilities before and after therapy. Results: There was no significant change in the ability to produce target phonemes at the word level. Conclusion: The Phonetic Placement method has not shown effectiveness in improving articulation in this case, possibly due to the limited number of therapy sessions. Further research is recommended with more frequent therapy, repetition, and combination with other methods. Keywords: UUMN dysarthria, Articulation, Phonetic Placement.
