Abstract

Education is the main pillar in shaping the quality of human resources. Phenomena such as increasing deviant behavior, lack of responsibility, fading spirit of mutual cooperation, and declining honesty and social ethics are a reflection that the education system has not fully succeeded in shaping a complete human being. This crisis shows that education that only focuses on academic aspects is not enough to produce individuals with noble morals. The urgency of character education is increasingly felt in the context of modern life which is marked by the rapid flow of globalization, the development of information technology, and the rapid flow of instant culture that tends to deny noble values and local wisdom. Various studies have shown that character education can have a positive impact on students' behavior, both in the school environment and in society. Character education encourages students to internalize good values such as responsibility, discipline, cooperation, and respect for differences. These values are important provisions in building a harmonious social life, as well as forming a generation that has integrity and healthy competitiveness. Therefore, character education not only functions as an instrument for forming individual personality, but also as an instrument of social transformation in order to create a civilized social order.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the concepts and practices of character education for students from the perspective of Islamic educational theology. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, 37 relevant scholarly articles published between 2013 and 2023 were thematically analyzed. The findings indicate that character formation in Islamic education is rooted in theological principles such as tauhid (divine unity), fitrah (natural disposition), and amanah (moral responsibility). Core Islamic character values include faith, piety, honesty, trustworthiness, patience, and justice. Implementation strategies include exemplary modeling (uswah), habituation (ta’dib), and spiritual reflection (muhasabah). Teachers play a crucial role as moral and spiritual exemplars in shaping students’ character. This study affirms that the theological approach in Islamic education significantly contributes to the development of holistic and transcendent character. The findings serve as a theoretical and practical reference for enhancing character education in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Sufism constitutes a central dimension of Islamic scholarship, focusing on inner spiritual cultivation through maqāmāt and aḥwāl as means of approaching Allah. Imam al-Ghazālī, through his seminal work Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm ad-Dīn, plays a pivotal role by integrating Sufism, sharī‘ah, and ethics. Although widely influential, the conceptual construction of maqām rūḥānī in this work has not been systematically reconstructed using a qualitative textual approach. Prior studies have discussed maqām in Islamic psychotherapy, psychology of religion, and spiritual education, yet they rarely address its structural and dynamic dimensions within al-Ghazālī’s framework. This study adopts qualitative library research employing content analysis and contextual-hermeneutic interpretation of Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm ad-Dīn. The findings indicate that al-Ghazālī’s concept of maqām rūḥānī is integrative, dynamic, and non-hierarchical, reflecting a continuous process of ethical and spiritual transformation connected to tazkiyat al-nafs. Its adaptive structure corresponds to the spiritual condition of the sālik, rendering it relevant for contemporary Islamic education spirituality.
