Abstract

This community service project was conducted by civil engineering students and lecturers from President University to assess the physical condition of two orphanages in Cikarang, Indonesia. The project focused on identifying visible building defects that may pose risks to safety, comfort, or health. Using non-invasive methods such as visual inspection, photographic documentation, and staff interviews, the students evaluated structural components, material conditions, and environmental factors at Rumah Harapan Graha Asri and Panti Asuhan Rumah Singgah Anak Berkat. Key findings included peeling paint, moisture-induced wall cracks, mold growth, unstable plywood flooring, and deteriorating wooden staircases. These issues were largely attributed to prolonged exposure to humidity, poor construction practices, and the absence of regular maintenance. The proposed actionable recommendations include waterproofing treatments, structural reinforcement, mold remediation, safety improvements, and the implementation of a simple maintenance plan. This project highlights the importance of building defect assessments in community-based facilities and demonstrates how civil engineering students and lecturers can contribute meaningfully to public welfare. It also served as a practical learning experience, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world context. The outcomes reinforce the need to integrate social responsibility and technical training into engineering education.

Abstract

The issue of inorganic waste, such as used cans, is increasingly prevalent in urban environments, including in the Tanjung Duren area of West Jakarta. Used cans, specifically large-sized paint cans, can be reused to create new products with both economic value and practical functionality. However, micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) actors, particularly women in the area, still lack the practical skills needed to process such waste creatively. In response to this need, the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) of Trisakti University organized a Community Engagement Program in the form of a training on reusing used cans to produce economically valuable items. This activity was attended by ten women MSME participants and was carried out using demonstration and hands-on mentoring methods. The outcome of the training was the creation of ten innovative products in the form of multifunctional storage containers that also serve as stools. This program not only offers a solution to environmental problems but also opens new economic opportunities for the participating community members.

Abstract

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are one of the main pillars of the Indonesian economy, capable of absorbing labor and improving community welfare. Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) are highly nutritious plants with potential to be developed as raw materials for processed food. Ketapang II Village has natural resources in the form of moringa leaves that have not been optimally utilized, as most residents only use them as vegetables for daily consumption. This study aims to develop a strategy for processing moringa leaves into pudding products with high selling value for local MSME actors. The method used is a qualitative approach through direct observation and interviews, covering the stages of production, packaging, and product marketing. Moringa leaf pudding is marketed in the village environment at a price of IDR 5,000.00/pcs and generates an added value of around 60% from production capital. The results show that this innovation can increase consumer interest in processed products made from moringa leaves and create new business opportunities for the community of Ketapang II Village.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the capacity of Jama'ah Tani Muhammadiyah (JATAM) cadres in Kembaran District in managing agribusiness based on local potential, particularly through semi-organic Cavendish banana cultivation. The activity was implemented through participatory training, utilizing an experiential learning approach, which covered banana cultivation techniques, basic agribusiness financial management, and agricultural product marketing strategies. The results of the activity showed significant improvements in three main aspects. Participants' understanding of Cavendish banana cultivation techniques increased by 76.19%, while their farm accounting skills increased by 61.9%. In terms of marketing, participants' understanding increased by 71.43%, supported by training in packaging, branding, and the use of digital media for promotion. Furthermore, this activity fostered an entrepreneurial spirit among the Jamaah Tani Muhammadiyah of the Kembaran District, encouraging them to develop independent businesses based on semi-organic banana cultivation. Overall, this activity demonstrated that a contextual, practical, and locally based training approach can enhance the competency of cadres in agribusiness development. This program not only provided technical skills but also encouraged a mindset transformation from conventional farmers to modern, independent, market-adaptive agribusiness actors. In the future, it is hoped that this activity model can be replicated in other regions to strengthen community-based economic independence.

Abstract

The mental well-being of inmates is often hindered by various psychosocial pressures such as stress, aggressiveness, low self-acceptance, and pessimism about the future. This study aims to enhance the psychological well-being of inmates through psychosocial interventions conducted at the Palembang Class IIA Women’s Correctional Institution. The program began with an assessment through observation, interviews, and surveys to identify four major psychosocial issues. Based on the assessment results, four types of interventions were developed, including psychoeducation based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), expressive arts therapy, forgiveness therapy, reality therapy, and active psychoeducation sessions. Each intervention was conducted in two face-to-face sessions involving a total of 26 selected participants. The pre-test and post-test results indicated an increase in participants’ knowledge and understanding of the psychological concepts delivered, followed by more adaptive behavioral changes in managing emotions, fostering self-compassion, accepting oneself, and developing a positive outlook toward the future. Overall, the findings demonstrate that psychosocial intervention can serve as an effective strategy to improve inmates’ mental well-being and readiness for social reintegration.

Abstract

The widespread use of nutmeg in North Maluku still focuses on the seeds and mace, which are dried and then sold. This often results in waste nutmeg pulp that is not optimally utilized and is thrown into the environment. Nutmeg pulp, which is the largest part of the nutmeg fruit, can be processed into various products. This community service activity aims to provide additional information and knowledge to women's farmer groups (KWT) in Kaiyasa Village to utilize nutmeg pulp waste into a derivative product, namely nutmeg dodol. The methods used in this activity include counseling and training on the utilization of nutmeg waste into a food product, namely nutmeg dodol, accompanied by technology transfer. The activity was carried out in stages, starting with the counseling stage to provide knowledge related to processing nutmeg pulp waste into dodol, followed by product manufacturing training and technology transfer. After the activity, there was an 80% increase in partners' knowledge level regarding the efficiency and utilization of nutmeg pulp waste and product diversification, namely nutmeg dodol, as obtained from the results of pre-tests and post-tests conducted after the counseling and training activities.

Abstract

Eggshell waste in Karangampel Village, Indramayu, has not been optimally utilized and has the potential to cause environmental problems. In fact, eggshells are rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), which is very useful as organic fertilizer. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of PKK cadres in processing eggshell waste into environmentally friendly and useful organic fertilizer. The activity was carried out in three stages: (1) Preparation and identification of initial needs; (2) Socialization and practical training on how to make fertilizer; and (3) Qualitative evaluation through structured group discussions. This activity was attended by 20 PKK members from Karangampel Village. The results of the activity showed an increase in understanding and enthusiasm among the participants. Participants not only understood the theory but also successfully practiced fertilizer production and began applying it to vegetable plants at home. Soil pH test results also showed an increase from 7.4 to 7.5 after applying the fertilizer, indicating an improvement in soil quality. This activity successfully transformed waste into a useful product, reduced environmental pollution, and opened up creative economic potential for the community through organic fertilizer products.

Abstract

Forest and land fires are recurring environmental problems in Musi Banyuasin Regency, particularly in areas dominated by forest landscapes and peatlands. This community engagement activity aimed to enhance community understanding and awareness of forest and land fire prevention and management through an educational and participatory socialization approach. The activity was conducted in Muara Merang Village, Bayung Lencir Subdistrict, and Pangkalan Bulian Village, Batanghari Leko Subdistrict, involving 45 participants representing village governments, Fire Care Community groups, farmer and forest farmer groups, youth organizations, and women’s groups. The implementation stages included an initial assessment and site selection, coordination with village stakeholders, pre-test administration, delivery of conceptual and technical materials, participatory discussions, and evaluation through post-test. The results indicate that the community’s initial understanding of forest and land fires was relatively adequate, with an average pre-test score of 6.2, although the understanding remained partial. After the socialization activity, participants’ understanding increased significantly, as reflected by an average post-test score of 9.25. Participatory discussions further revealed community needs for institutional strengthening, more intensive training, adequate equipment support, and sustainable land management alternatives without burning practices. These findings highlight the importance of community-based approaches as an initial step in strengthening local preparedness and sustainable forest and land fire prevention at the village level.
