Abstract

Intercultural communication awareness is a crucial competence for Generation Z in navigating an increasingly complex global environment. This study aims to analyze the factors affecting intercultural communication awareness among Generation Z, focusing on the intensity of cross-cultural interactions, communication comfort, cultural literacy, and the use of social media. A quantitative approach was used, employing a survey method involving over 100 university students from various institutions in Makassar. Data were collected through an online questionnaire covering ten key indicators. The findings reveal that most respondents frequently interact with individuals from different cultures and actively use social media to explore foreign cultures. Furthermore, they display a positive attitude in adapting their communication style and showing respect for cultural differences. However, challenges remain in avoiding cultural stereotypes and actively engaging in discussions about intercultural issues. The study concludes that exposure to different cultures through digital media and social interaction significantly enhances intercultural communication awareness. Multicultural education is needed to strengthen cross-cultural understanding and tolerance among Generation Z.

Abstract

This study examines the code-switching and code-mixing strategies of a Javanese-Australian diaspora family, namely the family behind the YouTube channel MyOzlife. Specifically, how code-switching and code-mixing function as a mechanism for maintaining the family's cultural identity in the digital space. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach and, for analysis, employs Miles and Huberman's content analysis, grounded in the theory of social functions, to examine 65 speech events and present interpretive analysis of the code-switching and code-mixing patterns of Javanese-Indonesian families. On the other hand, further findings are in the form of integration with the theory of axiological values. The findings of this study indicate that the linguistic principles used by the family on the MyOzlife channel by 43.1% indicate personalization versus objectivation, so that the main meaning and motive of code-switching are the management of social distance and affective expression rather than referential needs. The findings of this study are in line with the sociolinguistic strategy of the Javanese-Australian MyOzlife family as a manifestation of the cultural axiological values of rukun (social harmony), respect (hierarchy), and silaturahmi (family solidarity), which are manifested in using Javanese registers and religious interjections to transmit the values of politeness norms that their multilingual generation wants to learn. These findings indicate that, in the context of this Javanese-Australian family, multilingual phenomena such as code switching and code-mixing are demonstrated as communicative competence strategies integrated into local and global identities.

Abstract

A country's global competitiveness is shaped by its institutional and governance framework. This study examines how key governance dimensions—government effectiveness, political stability and absence of violence/terrorism, and voice and accountability— influence national competitiveness with infrastructure and economic performance as controlled variables. Using a cross-country quantitative approach, the study analyzes data from 69 countries in the World Competitiveness Ranking 2025 and the Worldwide Governance Indicators 2023. A multiple linear regression model shows strong explanatory power, with an R-squared of 0.9268. Results reveal that government effectiveness has the strongest positive and significant impact on competitiveness, followed by infrastructure and economic performance. Unexpectedly, both political stability and voice and accountability have significant negative relationships with competitiveness. This suggests that an extreme, possibly authoritarian stability and excessive accountability may hinder flexibility and efficient decision-making. Ultimately, enhancing competitiveness requires deep bureaucratic and institutional reforms to boost government effectiveness. It also calls for balancing political order, public participation, and agile, evidence-based policymaking

Abstract

Active student involvement is a fundamental component for establishing successful teaching and learning processes in higher education. Nevertheless, a significant number of university students still exhibit passive behavior during classroom discussions, primarily because they lack the confidence needed to voice their ideas. The use of interactive digital platforms presents a viable alternative to foster a learning atmosphere that is more engaging and participatory. The objective of this research is to evaluate how interactive digital learning via Nearpod affects university students' confidence levels when expressing their academic opinions. A quantitative methodology was utilized, specifically implementing a quasi-experimental approach with a pretest-posttest control group design. The participants comprised students taking the Classroom Action Research course within the Sociology Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Information was gathered utilizing a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring self-confidence, and the results were evaluated using N-Gain, independent sample t-tests, and effect size calculations. The findings demonstrate that the group utilizing Nearpod exhibited a more substantial growth in self-confidence than the traditional control group. Specifically, the experimental group achieved a moderate N-Gain score of 0.63, whereas the control group only reached a low score of 0.19. Furthermore, statistical evaluations indicated a meaningful variance between the two groups (p < 0.05), accompanied by a large effect size of 0.87. These results imply that Nearpod's interactive tools—especially the voice response function—serve as a secure digital space that supports students in progressively developing their courage to communicate academic thoughts.

Abstract

Differential treatment of boys and girls in parenting and education has led to inequality. The reality of the dual roles  often imposed on women demonstrates a complexity that is not easy to navigate. Childhood is an important period  because it is during this phase that an individual's personality begins to form and children begin to explore themselves.  This can be minimized through equal and proportional educational parenting patterns for both boys and girls. To that  end, this study aims to explore the principles of Islamic parenting with a gender perspective. This paper describes the  efforts that must be made in raising and educating children with a gender perspective. The research method used is a  library research approach. The collected data was then analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results of the  study show that one of the principles of gender-sensitive Islamic parenting is framed in the concept of hadhanah. Child rearing based on gender values provides equal opportunities for boys and girls to develop their potential in order to realize  a just and peaceful society in accordance with the spirit of Islamic values.

Abstract

The practice of dual religiosity of Christianity and Indigenous African Religion (AIR), among Bemba Catholics in the Muchinga Province of Zambia, is a lived reality. Bemba Catholics exist in a region where two different worldviews exist, which leads them to practise their faith through a combination of different beliefs and practices while encountering difficulties when their Christian faith faces challenges from their indigenous practices and cultural traditions. Therefore, the study examines how this dual religiosity is negotiated. The study used a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to study 20 Bemba Catholics who formed the sample size from Chilonga and Ilondola. Bemba Catholics blend AIR elements with Catholicism through integration, syncretism, adaptation, contextualisation and juxtapositioning. They create new rituals that combine both traditions, selectively adopting AIR beliefs, interpreting them through a Christian lens, and maintaining their Christian identity. They establish their Catholic identity by practicing Catholicism through their traditional African rituals. Some maintain clear boundaries, whereas others embrace hybridity. These strategies show that religious negotiation has changed throughout history, while participating in dual religiosity and cultural identity, and maintaining indigenous beliefs under Christian influence results in insufficient support by religious organisations and limits interfaith dialogue opportunities.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ understanding of the roles and functions of mosques through the implementation of case-based learning combined with field observation tasks in the Islamic Religious Education course at Politeknik Negeri Banyuwangi. The study employed Classroom Action Research using two cycles, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 23 students. Data were collected through learning achievement tests, observation, documentation, and field observation assignment sheets, and were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings showed that students’ initial understanding of the roles and functions of mosques was still limited and tended to be theoretical. The mean pre-test score was 67.7. After the implementation of case-based learning through field observation tasks, the mean score increased to 77.2 in Cycle I and 83.3 in Cycle II. The learning process also became more active, contextual, and reflective, as students were able to connect conceptual knowledge with socio-religious realities in the community. These findings indicate that case-based learning through field observation tasks was effective in enhancing students’ cognitive understanding, analytical ability, and learning engagement. Therefore, this instructional model is relevant for vocational higher education contexts that require the integration of theory and field experience.
