Abstract

This study examines the challenges faced by special education teachers in teaching deaf students within inclusive educational settings. Children with hearing impairments require adaptive and individualized instructional approaches due to their limitations in verbal communication and language development. The objective of this research is to explore and identify the specific challenges encountered by a teacher at a special school (SLB Dharma Wanita Sumenep) and to understand the strategies used to address them. This study employs a qualitative method with an intrinsic case study approach, focusing on a single teacher as the research subject. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observations, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal several key challenges, including communication barriers, limited learning media and instructional materials, lack of professional support, dependence on parental collaboration, limited facilities, and the need for individualized learning approaches. Communication difficulties emerge as the most dominant issue, requiring teachers to master sign language and adapt teaching strategies. In conclusion, despite various constraints, teachers demonstrate strong commitment and adaptability in supporting deaf students. The study highlights the importance of collaboration, adequate resources, and flexible pedagogical practices in achieving effective inclusive education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of classroom teachers in supporting the learning process of children with special needs (CWSN) experiencing speech delay in an inclusive public elementary school. The background of this research is based on the importance of inclusive education and preliminary findings regarding the limited structural support available in the school. The research method employed was qualitative descriptive, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that classroom teachers play a crucial role by implementing personalized strategies, adaptive communication, and collaboration with parents, despite the absence of specialized learning systems or professional support such as special education assistants. Challenges encountered include a lack of professional training, the absence of an adaptive curriculum, and limited supporting facilities. This study emphasizes the pivotal role of classroom teachers as primary facilitators in bridging the needs of children with special needs and creating an inclusive learning environment. It also highlights the necessity of systemic support from educational institutions to ensure the effective implementation of inclusive practices.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the importance of communication as a fundamental aspect of learning and social interaction, particularly for children with autism who often face significant communication challenges. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the effectiveness of educational service strategies in supporting the communication development of children with autism at Yayasan Cinta Ananda. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers who directly engage with children on the autism spectrum. The analysis was conducted by organizing, reducing, and interpreting data to identify patterns and key themes related to communication strategies and their implementation in the learning process. The findings reveal that adaptive and individualized strategies are effectively applied, supported by the use of visual aids and the active role of teachers as facilitators. These strategies contribute to improved communication skills, increased interaction, and greater confidence among students. However, limitations such as varying student abilities, limited resources, and the need for continuous teacher development were also identified. In conclusion, educational service strategies at Yayasan Cinta Ananda are effective in enhancing communication skills among children with autism, although continuous improvement is required to address existing challenges.

Abstract

Learning difficulties in mathematics are a common problem experienced by elementary school students, particularly in basic arithmetic operations, which can impact their academic achievement and attitudes toward mathematics in the future. This study aims to examine teachers’ efforts in overcoming mathematics learning difficulties among elementary school students, especially those experiencing dyscalculia. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method at SDN Gunggung 1, with the fifth-grade homeroom teacher selected as the research subject through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that fifth-grade students experience difficulties in mathematics, particularly in multiplication and division operations. These difficulties are caused by low learning motivation, limited parental supervision due to work commitments, and dependence on technology that reduces the habit of memorizing basic concepts. The teacher’s efforts to address these challenges include strengthening multiplication memorization, implementing heterogeneous group learning, and maintaining communication with parents through home visits. This study concludes that successfully overcoming mathematics learning difficulties requires effective collaboration between teachers, schools, and parents to ensure optimal learning continuity.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low learning outcomes of Grade V students at SD Negeri 1 Nganganaumala in the subject of Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS), which were caused by unvaried and predominantly passive teaching methods. The aim of this research was to examine the effectiveness of the discovery learning method in improving student learning outcomes. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach involving 21 students as subjects. The research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data collection techniques included observation of learning activities, student achievement tests, and documentation. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively by examining improvements in student engagement and test scores from the pre-cycle to the second cycle. The results showed a significant improvement in student learning outcomes, with the class mastery increasing from less than half of the students achieving passing scores in the pre-cycle to nearly all students achieving mastery by the second cycle. Furthermore, students’ motivation and participation in the learning process also showed positive growth. In conclusion, the discovery learning method is effective in improving student learning outcomes and fostering a more active, creative, and enjoyable learning process. Therefore, this method is recommended for continuous implementation in elementary schools to enhance learning quality.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of verbal sexual violence in academic discourse within higher education institutions using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. The research focuses on utterances containing elements of objectification, discursive strategies that normalize discrimination, and power relations within lecturer–student interactions. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. The research instrument consisted of a stimulus checklist containing 25 sentences representing potential forms of verbal sexual violence. This instrument was tested on 20 student respondents selected through purposive sampling. The validity of the instrument was established through a literature review and a readability test with initial respondents. Data were analyzed using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework, namely text analysis, discourse practice, and social practice, and were triangulated with confirmatory interviews. The in-depth analysis reveals that although such utterances are often framed as humor, they reproduce patriarchal ideologies, reinforce asymmetrical power relations, and expose contradictions between the institution’s religious norms and everyday linguistic practices. This study makes a theoretical contribution by demonstrating that Fairclough’s CDA is effective in uncovering verbal sexual violence even in the form of subtle harassment or jokes, which have been largely overlooked in religious academic contexts. The novelty of this research lies in the identification of minor yet significant phenomena in religiously affiliated universities, showing that patriarchal power relations can still manifest through language even when the frequency of explicit cases is very low.

Abstract

Elementary schools are considered crucial spaces for students’ socialization, as they provide opportunities for children to develop social skills alongside academic knowledge. This study aims to examine teachers’ perceptions of the role of elementary schools in fostering social values and to explore the factors influencing the effectiveness of socialization in the classroom. A qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five elementary school teachers, focusing on their experiences in integrating social values into daily learning activities and the challenges they faced. The results indicate that teachers perceive schools as not only academic institutions but also as environments where students learn cooperation, empathy, discipline, and respect for others. Socialization occurs through classroom activities, group work, peer interactions, and teachers’ modeling of appropriate behavior. However, the study also found that the integration of social values is often limited due to the dominance of cognitive-focused curriculum objectives. In addition, school policy and culture were identified as significant factors in supporting effective socialization, with schools emphasizing character education providing greater opportunities for teachers to foster social skills consistently. The findings suggest that a balanced approach between academic and social development, supported by conducive school policies, is essential for optimizing student socialization in elementary education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of character education in public elementary schools and to develop a model for character strengthening based on local culture. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving teachers, school principals, and parents. The results indicate that character education in elementary schools has not been systematically integrated into the curriculum and learning activities. Teachers have not fully assumed the role of value facilitators, and parental involvement remains limited. The rich local culture of Buton, which embodies moral values such as kabanti, kaghati, and gotong royong, has not been explicitly utilized as a resource for character learning. This study proposes a model of character education based on local culture, comprising five main components: an integrated curriculum, teacher role modeling, contextual learning, school–parent partnerships, and character evaluation based on local values. These findings are expected to provide a practical contribution to the development of contextual, sustainable character education that is deeply rooted in regional cultural identity.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of teachers’ roles in creating a social environment for character education in elementary schools, highlighting the shift from an instructional model to an ecosystemic approach. The introduction emphasizes the importance of teachers not only as transmitters of values but also as role models and architects of classroom culture who foster students’ moral growth. The main objective of this research is to analyze the multiple roles of teachers in shaping character, as well as to identify challenges and opportunities in sustaining effective character education. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, drawing on literature reviews and recent empirical findings from case studies in Indonesian elementary schools. Data sources include previous research conducted, which provide insights into teacher practices, classroom management, and systemic constraints. The findings reveal that teachers play five complementary roles in character formation: educator, demonstrator, classroom manager, motivator, and evaluator. These roles contribute significantly to building an inclusive and value-based classroom atmosphere that enhances students’ politeness, responsibility, and social care. However, challenges remain in terms of administrative pressures, lack of character-based training, and limited institutional support. In conclusion, the study underscores that teacher transformation in character education requires pedagogical, social, and reflective capacities, as well as strong collaboration among schools, families, and communities to ensure systemic and sustainable outcomes.
