Abstract

Modern science has generated technological advancements with significant destructive potential, including nuclear weapons and genetic engineering, despite the normative expectation that scientific inquiry should be grounded in ethical values that uphold human dignity. This disjunction originates from an epistemological shift during the Renaissance, when elements of the Islamic intellectual tradition were selectively appropriated while their theological foundations were marginalized, resulting in a value-free scientific paradigm. This study examines this epistemological transformation, analyzes its implications for contemporary technology, and proposes a framework through the integration of maqāṣid al-Syarī‘ah and qawā‘id fiqhiyyah. It employs a qualitative library-based methodology with historical, comparative, and synthetic-prospective analyses. The findings indicate three key points. First, there is a substantive link between the Renaissance epistemological shift and the modern technological ethical crisis. Second, critiques of technological exploitation are not limited to Islamic thought but are also expressed by Western thinkers such as Jürgen Habermas; however, the Islamic framework provides a more systematic and hierarchical ethical model. Third, this framework demonstrates practical relevance, particularly in prohibiting nuclear weapons based on ḥifẓ al-nafs and the principle lā ḍarar wa lā ḍirār, as well as in classifying embryo selection as taḥsīniyyāt. This study argues that reintegrating revelatory values into science is essential to ensure that technological progress remains aligned with human dignity.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenology of al-Hallaj’s ma‘rifat through an interpretation of the phrase “Anā al-Ḥaqq” in the context of the contemporary spiritual crisis. The main research questions include: how al-Hallaj’s ma‘rifat is understood as a transformation of mystical consciousness, how “Anā al-Ḥaqq” is interpreted phenomenologically, and how this experience is relevant in addressing the spiritual crisis of modern humanity. This study employs a literature review method with a qualitative-philosophical approach, utilizing phenomenological analysis of consciousness and textual readings of al-Hallaj’s primary sources, particularly Kitāb al-Ṭawāsīn, supported by contemporary academic studies. The results of the study indicate that al-Hallaj’s ma‘rifat is a spiritual experience characterized by tazkiyah, fanā’, baqā’, and tajallī, thereby shifting the center of consciousness from the empirical ego toward Divine Presence. Within this framework, “Anā al-Ḥaqq” should not be understood as an ontological identity claim between humanity and God, but rather as a linguistic testimony to a consciousness that has transcended the subject–object duality. A phenomenological analysis reveals that the “Ana” in this expression is not al-Hallaj’s biographical self, but a subject that has undergone the dissolution of the ego and appears as an atsar (trace) of al-Haqq. This finding affirms that al-Hallaj’s Sufism is not only significant as a classical mystical legacy but also relevant as a spiritual paradigm capable of addressing the crisis of meaning, the formalization of religion, and the existential alienation of contemporary humanity. Thus, this article contributes to bridging classical Sufism, the phenomenology of religion, and the problems of modern spirituality through a more textual, philosophical, and contextual reading.

Abstract

Generation Z, often referred to as the “Strawberry Generation,” is characterized by marked psychological vulnerability arising from social pressures and intensive digital exposure. This condition requires an approach that is not only technical but also spiritual, such as the concept of tazkiyah al-nafs in Islamic teachings. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the potential of tazkiyah al-nafs as a mental resilience strategy for Generation Z based on al-Ghazali’s thought. This research employs a qualitative approach using the library research method with content analysis techniques. The data sources include Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Dīn, scientific articles, and thematic books related to tazkiyah al-nafs and mental health. The findings indicate that tazkiyah al-nafs provides a systematic spiritual framework for cultivating mental resilience. The stage of takhallī teaches the release of blameworthy traits such as anger, envy, and worldly attachment, which often constitute the roots of emotional instability. Taḥallī instills virtues such as patience, gratitude, trust in God, and humility, which strengthen psychological stability and foster a sense of life meaning. Meanwhile, tajallī represents a phase of spiritual illumination in which individuals attain inner peace and profound transcendental awareness. Collectively, these three stages enhance coping capacity and establish a holistic structure of long-term resilience. This study contributes to integrating Sufi values into the framework of modern Islamic psychology while expanding the discourse on spiritual interventions as concrete solutions to mental health challenges among young generations.

Abstract

This study employs a critical descriptive-comparative approach to examine Matthew Lipman’s concept of multidimensional thinking in Philosophy for Children (P4C) from the perspective of Islamic thought. In the context of global education that prioritizes STEAM disciplines to promote Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), Lipman’s framework highlights critical, creative, and caring thinking as core dimensions. However, Islamic epistemology offers a more holistic understanding of thought. Using qualitative analysis, this study first reconstructs Lipman’s ideas based on Thinking in Education and Philosophy Goes to School, alongside classical Islamic concepts of ‘aql (intellect), qalb (heart), and nafs (soul). A comparative analysis is conducted to identify key similarities and differences, followed by a critical evaluation of the epistemological limitations of Lipman’s model. The findings indicate that, in Islam, thinking transcends rational processes and encompasses spiritual and ethical dimensions. While Lipman’s model is valuable in cultivating reflective thinking, it remains largely secular. Islam, by contrast, integrates reason, intuition, and divine consciousness. This study concludes that multidimensional thinking in Islam reflects the principle of tawḥīd al-‘ilm, offering a more integrated framework that unifies intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions of knowledge.

Abstract

This article analyzes the dynamics and challenges faced by Islamic civilization amid the dominance of Western modernity, which has now transformed into neoliberal globalization, digital capitalism, and epistemic hegemony. The study explores how Islamic civilization can reformulate its strategic role in constructing a modern Muslim society that is not only technologically advanced but also spiritually and ethically grounded. Employing a qualitative library-based method with a descriptive-analytical approach and a civilizational analytical framework, this research examines classical and contemporary literature on civilizational theory, modernization, the coloniality of knowledge, and Islamic reformism. The findings indicate that Western modernity does not merely generate scientific and institutional progress; it also promotes a secular-materialistic paradigm that tends to marginalize the dimension of transcendence from the public sphere. In this context, the crisis experienced by Muslim societies is not a theological crisis, but rather an epistemic one crisis and a crisis of civilizational confidence. Historically, Islamic civilization was built upon the integration of dzikr (spiritual consciousness) and fikr (intellectual rationality) as two fundamental pillars of societal advancement. Therefore, the revitalization of Islamic civilization in the global era requires the reconstruction of epistemology, educational reform, and the strengthening of a civilizational identity that engages modernity in a selective and critical manner.

Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship between ecological crisis and the construction of the human worldview, explaining how certain paradigms contribute to environmental degradation. Conceptually, ecological crisis and worldview  distinct entities; however, they are closely interconnected, as worldview functions as the primary driving force in shaping both social and moral continuity and transformation. Accordingly, human perception of the world generates actions, including responses to global ecological problems; thus, errors in worldview lead to inappropriate actions toward nature. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, drawing on a range of literature, both classical and contemporary, in both print and digital formats. The analysis is conducted through a conceptual exposition of worldview and ecological crisis, followed by an examination of their relationship. The findings indicate that the contemporary ecological crisis cannot be separated from the dominance of the Western secular worldview, which tends to position nature as an object of exploitation. As an alternative, this article proposes the Islamic worldview as a solution, which for more than 1,400 years has taught the principles of balance and responsibility toward nature. The concepts of iṣlāḥ (reform) and ifsād (corruption/destruction) serve as ethical foundations for establishing a harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. Furthermore, this study recommends that future research further develop and empirically examine the implementation of the Islamic paradigm as both a conceptual and practical approach to environmental preservation.

Abstract

Tasawwuf, or Islamic mysticism, occupies a prominent place in Islamic studies. Its literature has contributed greatly to the development of Islamic thought, ethics, and education. However, despite the role and impact of the Sufism literature, it is undeniable that the mapping and its relevance to other studies in a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of this work is lacking. To address this gap, it is critical to explore and measure the scientific outcomes, dissemination, and impact of research related to Sufism mapping. In this bibliometric study, a systematic approach is used to analyze a wide range of academic literature. This analysis begins by collecting relevant research articles from the Scopus database, papers from leading academic databases and repositories and then screening with several filters. Furthermore, we used bibliometric techniques, including citation analysis, co-authorship networks, and keyword mapping, to assess trends, patterns, and connections in the Sufism mapping literature. In conclusion, this bibliometric study offers valuable insights into the scientific contribution of Sufism literature which is closely related to other studies, such as spirituality, mental health, politics, and others. By mapping intellectual networks and identifying influential works and authors, this will facilitate future research directions and promote a greater understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of mapping Sufism studies.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of Islamic education according to Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and t to examine its relationship with reason and the Al-Qur’an. This research employs a literature research method by collecting data through the process of text analysis from various literary sources. The results of the research show that the concept of Islamic education offered by al-Attas is ta'dib. Ta'dib can be understood as an effort to influence and instill (inculcate) manners in humans which is carried out through the educational process. This concept focuses on instilling manners in students so that they are able to become good and civilized human beings. In order to be a good and civilized human being, a person must be able to differentiate between good and bad. In this context, al-Attas explained that the reason and the values of the Al-Qur'an are two important things so that humans can differentiate between what is ḥaqq and bāthil. Al-Attas revealed that reason and the Al-Qur’an are two things that complement each other.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze and integrate the concepts of faith (iman) and morality (akhlak) in the thought of Said Nursi, as well as to explore his ideas in depth through a direct study of his works. The main objective is to understand the role of faith as the foundation of morality and how morality serves as a tangible manifestation of faith. This study uses a qualitative research method with a literature review approach. The primary source examined is Kulliyāt Rasāil al-Nūr, Said Nursi's masterpiece, along with other supporting literature. The results indicate that, according to Nursi, faith is not merely a belief, but also has a concrete impact on an individual's moral behavior. Good morality reflects true faith, while maintaining a noble character further strengthens one's faith. Furthermore, from an Islamic perspective, morality is not only a social norm but also an act of worship that brings the individual closer to Allah. This study also reveals that, in Nursi's view, excessive materialism and worldly indulgence can weaken faith and corrupt morality. Conversely, good morals bring inner peace and happiness as a result of strong faith. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that faith and morality are two interrelated aspects that cannot be separated in the formation of individuals and the creation of a harmonious society. The integration of the two serves as a critical foundation to face the challenges of modern life.

Abstract

This article explores the Sufi thought of Ahmad Khatib al-Sambasi, an influential 19th-century Nusantara Sufi, and the characteristics of his Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqshabandiyah (TQN). Using a qualitative approach and library research methodology, the study analyzes al-Sambasi's works, particularly Fatḥ al-‘Ārifīn, alongside secondary literature on TQN and Sufism. The research employs documentation for data collection and content analysis for interpretation. Findings reveal that al-Sambasi developed a comprehensive spiritual system grounded in tauḥīd and ma‘rifah, featuring systematic dzikr methods and spiritual practices. His teachings successfully integrate Syarī‘ah and Ḥaqīqah, emphasizing a balance between exoteric and esoteric dimensions. The TQN's distinctive features include a hierarchical structure, specific rituals like bai‘at and talqīn dzikr, and strict ethical guidelines for followers. Al-Sambasi's significant contribution lies in adapting classical Sufism to the Nusantara context, fostering widespread acceptance in the region. The study concludes that al-Sambasi's thought offers a balanced and comprehensive spirituality model, relevant both in his time and in contemporary Islamic spirituality.
