Abstract

Acne vulgaris (AV), commonly known as acne, is a common skin problem that can cause skin damage. AV is a form of chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles due to blockage. According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), 85% of people, including young adults aged 12 to 25, have experienced AV. One factor that often exacerbates the occurrence of AV is the use of cosmetics with comedogenic properties. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between cosmetic use and the occurrence of AV in female students of the Faculty of Medicine, Christian University of Indonesia class of 2023. Observational analysis research with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. A total of 85 samples were obtained using the research method, namely purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted at a single point in time to explore cosmetic use related to AV events. Data analysis using univariate and bivariate techniques. From the total, 76 respondents (89.4%) experienced AV and 9 respondents (10.6%) didn’t. The Fisher Exact Test results obtained a P value > 0.05, this indicates that there was no significant relationship between cosmetic use and AV incidents in these female students.

Abstract

Breech presentation is a common malpresentation in pregnancy, associated with increased perinatal mortality and maternal morbidity. Conventional management such as cesarean section (CS) or vaginal breech delivery may cause trauma and risks for both mother and baby. Therefore, non-invasive complementary approaches, including moxibustion (Chinese traditional therapy) and rebozo (Mexican traditional technique), are being explored as safer alternatives. This study analyzed the potential of moxibustion and the rebozo technique in correcting breech presentation. A quasi-experimental design with a post-test only nonequivalent control group was used. Sixty pregnant women (28–36 weeks gestation) with breech presentation, participants were divided into intervention and control groups using purposive sampling. The intervention group received moxibustion at BL67 and rebozo for 10 consecutive days (10 minutes/day), while the control group performed knee-chest therapy with the same duration and frequency. Data on fetal position were collected through observation and analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Significant differences were found between groups (U = 0.00; Z = -6.145; p = 0.000), with the intervention group showing a higher rate of conversion from breech to cephalic presentation. Moxibustion and rebozo techniques are effective non-invasive alternatives for breech correction and may be integrated into antenatal midwifery education and care programs.

Abstract

Back pain is a common complaint in pregnant women during the third trimester due to physiological changes affecting the connective tissue and spinal structure. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination of effleurage massage, bitter orange aromatherapy, and Beethoven's music on reducing back pain and physiological responses in pregnant women during the third trimester. The study design used a quasi-experimental approach with a pre-post test control group approach. Sixty respondents were divided into two groups: the intervention and the control. The intervention group received the combination therapy three times a week for four weeks, while the control group received no intervention. The results showed a significant decrease in blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and pain scores after the intervention. Most respondents in the intervention group experienced a shift in pain category from moderate and severe to mild pain. In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes. This combination therapy proved to be physiologically and psychologically effective, consistent with the gate control pain theory and supported by previous literature. The combination of touch through massage, the aroma of bitter orange oil, and classical music stimulation provided a comprehensive relaxation effect. This intervention is safe, non-invasive, and easy to implement both independently and in midwifery practice. Therefore, this combination therapy is recommended as a complementary approach in antenatal care services to address back pain in pregnant women in the third trimester.

Abstract

The most common cancer in children is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) with 14,979 cases in Indonesia. One of the cancer treatments is chemotherapy, which uses chemicals and has physiological side effects. One of the most common physiological side effects is nausea and vomiting, which is experienced by around 75% of patients. As a result, children experience fluid and electrolyte imbalances which negatively impact patient compliance in undergoing chemotherapy programs and are worried that patients will choose not to continue and stop their chemotherapy cycles due to discomfort caused by the side effects. Management of nausea and vomiting can be done with non-pharmacological therapy. One therapy that can be done is acupressure therapy at points P6 and St36, which is believed to improve energy flow in the stomach, thereby stimulating the release of beta endorphins in the pituitary gland, which can inhibit nausea and vomiting impulses in the vomiting center. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of acupressure therapy on nausea and vomiting in children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) undergoing chemotherapy at Dr. M. Djamil Padang General Hospital. Research methodology: using Quasi-Experimental with pre-experimental design with One-Group Pre-posttest design approach. The research sample was ALL pediatric patients undergoing chemotherapy, aged 6-18 years, experiencing nausea and vomiting and has been measured with the PeNAT instrument with results of 3 and 4, patients who were not given anti-emetic therapy. The sampling technique was carried out using purposive sampling technique. The population of this study was children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) aged 6-18 years who underwent chemotherapy at Dr. M. Djamil Padang Regional Hospital with a sample size of 15 people with the sample criteria being willing to be respondents, ALL child patients undergoing chemotherapy aged 6-18 years, who experienced nausea and vomiting. The study will be conducted within one year. Data analysis techniques were carried out univariately and bivariately with computerization. The results of the study showed that the average score of nausea and vomiting in children before the intervention was 3.467 and after the intervention was 2.133, with a mean difference of 1.334. The results of the statistical test using the Wilcoxon T-Test obtained a p-value = 0.000 ≤ 0.05, so it can be interpreted that there is an effect of acupressure therapy on nausea and vomiting in children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) undergoing chemotherapy at Dr. M Djamil Padang Hospital. The results of this study have shown that acupressure can significantly reduce nausea and vomiting scores in respondents who experience nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy.

Abstract

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention to improve patient survival. Basic Life Support (BLS) training has proven effective in enhancing individuals’ knowledge and skills, particularly in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques. However, challenges such as limited access, high costs, and skill deterioration over time remain significant obstacles. This study aims to evaluate various BLS training methods, including simulation-based approaches, technology-enhanced learning, and traditional methods. Articles searched via Google Scholar with a filter from 2019-2024 found 14 journal articles relevant to the research. A systematic literature review reveals that simulation-based training has the most substantial impact on improving practical skills compared to other approaches. Strategic recommendations include integrating BLS training into formal education curricula, conducting periodic refreshers, and utilizing innovative technologies to enhance training effectiveness. These measures are expected to improve the preparedness of both the public and healthcare providers in managing medical emergencies and ultimately save more lives.

Abstract

The global rise of antibiotic resistance has encouraged researchers to investigate natural plant-based alternatives. Leucaena leucocephala (lamtoro) seeds contain bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which are suspected to possess antibacterial activity. This study aimed to assess the inhibitory effect of ethanol extract of Leucaena leucocephala seeds on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Method: Antibacterial activity was determined using the disc diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar. Extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% were tested. Aquadest served as the negative control, vancomycin (30 μg) as the positive control for S. aureus, and chloramphenicol (30 μg) as the positive control for E. coli. Each treatment was conducted in triplicate, and the inhibition zones were measured using a vernier caliper. The extract demonstrated measurable antibacterial effects on both tested bacteria. The average inhibition zones against S. aureus were 6.17 mm (5%), 6.20 mm (10%), and 6.42 mm (15%), while the positive control vancomycin showed 15.49 mm. For E. coli, inhibition zones were 6.24 mm (5%), 6.26 mm (10%), and 6.44 mm (15%), compared with 21.66 mm for chloramphenicol. The activity of the extract was classified as moderate, and higher concentrations yielded slightly larger zones. Ethanol extract of Leucaena leucocephala seeds exhibits moderate antibacterial potential against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract

Puskesmas Pembantu (Pustu) is the spearhead of basic health services in rural areas. However, the effectiveness of Pustu services is often affected by various factors such as the availability of staff, infrastructure, and community accessibility. This study aims to reveal in depth the community's experience in obtaining health services at Pustu. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological study method. The research sample was selected by purposive sampling. Informants consisted of 11 people, namely the general public, cadres, and village officials who were selected purposively. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, and data analysis followed Colaizzi's 7 steps. The study found six main themes: (1) positive and responsive staff attitudes are factors in community satisfaction, (2) limited schedules and staff attendance hamper access to services, (3) inadequate Pustu facilities reduce comfort, (4) referrals to the main Puskesmas are hampered by distance and transportation, (5) community expectations for an active and alert Pustu, and (6) the important role of village government in supporting service continuity. The existence of Pustu is very important for village communities, but service delivery still faces challenges in terms of service continuity, completeness of facilities, and accessibility.

Abstract

Heart failure is a chronic condition that affects patients' quality of life and requires long-term management. Physical activity plays a crucial role in controlling the progression of heart failure. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between physical activity levels and disease duration in heart failure patients. This study used an observational study method with a cross-sectional design in 158 heart failure patients treated at a regional general hospital in Surakarta during August 2023–August 2024. Physical activity levels were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and disease duration was obtained from patient medical records. The IPAQ instrument is a standardized instrument that underwent validity and reliability tests by Craig in 2003. The results of the validity test ranged from 0.14 to 0.53, with a median value of 0.30. The reliability test results ranged from 0.34 to 0.89, with a median value of 0.80. Spearman's correlation analysis showed a significant negative relationship between physical activity levels and disease duration (r = -0.951, p < 0.05), indicating that patients with higher levels of physical activity tended to have shorter disease duration. These results demonstrate the importance of increasing physical activity in the management of heart failure patients to improve prognosis.
