Abstract

The expression of meaning in the Qur’an constitutes an essential aspect of bal?ghah studies, demonstrating the linguistic excellence of the revealed text. Meaning in the Qur’an is not merely literal; rather, it is constructed through the interaction between linguistic structure, context, and rhetorical devices. This study aims to comprehensively examine the expression of meaning in the language style of the Qur’an from the perspective of bal?ghah. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the library research method, drawing upon various scholarly works related to ‘ilm al-ma‘?n?, ‘ilm al-bay?n, and ‘ilm al-bad?‘ as the primary data sources. The data were analyzed through content analysis focusing on the expression of meaning. The findings reveal that meaning in the Qur’an is contextual and dynamic, developed through the harmony between structure and context (‘ilm al-ma‘?n?), the variation of implicit and symbolic expressions (‘ilm al-bay?n), and the reinforcement of aesthetic and rhetorical elements (‘ilm al-bad?‘). These three aspects function integratively in producing meanings that are not only linguistically precise but also rhetorically persuasive and aesthetically powerful. This study underscores the importance of a holistic approach to understanding the language style of the Qur’an and contributes conceptually to the development of Qur’anic linguistic studies based on bal?ghah.

Abstract

This article discusses the varieties of Qur’anic stylistic expression (uslub) from the perspective of balaghah. The study is grounded in the importance of understanding the linguistic distinctiveness of the Qur’an not merely as a form of literary beauty, but also as a Qur’anic communication strategy that possesses semantic power, rhetorical force, and spiritual influence. This research employs a library research method using a descriptive-analytical approach. The data were obtained from relevant literature on ulumul Qur’an, balaghah, and Qur’anic stylistics. The findings indicate that the varieties of Qur’anic stylistic expression can be understood in multiple layers. The first layer relates to modes of delivery, such as uslub ‘ilmi, uslub adabiy, uslub khithaby, uslub iltifat, and uslub al-hakim. The second layer includes forms of expression, such as amtsal, jadal, aqsam, and qashash. The third layer comprises rhetorical devices in balaghah, such as ijaz, ithnab, musawah, isti‘arah, tasybih, and kinayah. This study affirms that the Qur’anic style does not function merely as verbal ornamentation, but operates as a Qur’anic communication system that integrates clarity, beauty, argumentation, politeness, and depth of meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms of ego defense mechanisms of the main character and their role in the development of the storyline in the novel Carita Calin by Aprilia Fatmawati. This study is motivated by the importance of understanding literary works not only as a representation of social reality, but also as a reflection of the psychological dynamics of the main character. The approach used is literary psychology based on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, especially the concepts of id, ego, superego, and ego defense mechanisms. This research also emphasizes the novelty in the analysis of the relationship between the main character's ego defense mechanism and the development of the storyline in the novel. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with literature study techniques. The research data is in the form of quotes in the novel that show the symptoms of the main character's ego defense mechanism. Data collection techniques are carried out through the reading and recording methods, while data analysis is carried out through the identification, classification, and interpretation stages based on Freud's psychoanalytic theory. Next, the data is analyzed to see how it relates to the development of the storyline. The results of the study show that the main character, Caliandra Rowana (Calin), uses various ego defense mechanisms, such as repression, diversion, projection, rationalization, regression, formation reaction, denial, sublimation and fantasy. The dominant mechanisms are repression, diversion and projection, which show a tendency to use less adaptive defense strategies. These mechanisms not only reflect the psychological state of the main character, but also play a role in emerging, directing, and prolonging conflicts in the storyline. The main character's ego defense mechanism is closely related to the development of the storyline in the novel Carita Calin by Aprilia Fatmawati.

Abstract

Historical semantic study in Arabic linguistics is a field that traces the journey of Arabic word meanings across time. This study aims to examine the development of historical semantics in the Arabic linguistic tradition diachronically, from the classical period to the contemporary era, while analyzing its relevance to Arabic language education practices in Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on library research, data were collected from primary and secondary sources including classical Arabic linguistic works, recent scientific journals, and Arabic language education curriculum documents. The findings indicate that Arabic historical semantics has undergone rich dynamics, from the classical Arabic lexicographic tradition (8th century CE) to its integration with 20th-century Western modern linguistics. Furthermore, a thorough understanding of Arabic lexical meaning shifts proves pedagogically relevant, particularly in developing competence in reading classical texts, enriching vocabulary instruction, and enhancing comprehension of religious discourse. This study concludes that integrating the historical-semantic dimension into Arabic language learning in Indonesia is not merely an added value, but an epistemological necessity that has long been underrecognized in national curriculum design.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the internal and external factors affecting students’ basic Arabic literacy at Pondok Pesantren Bustanil Inshaf in Teluk Rendah Pasar Village. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. The research participants consisted of four students with varying characteristics of literacy difficulty, one Arabic language teacher, and the head of the pondok pesantren (Islamic boarding school). The results showed that internal factors, including high intrinsic motivation, a Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic Elementary School) background, and consistent independent study habits, supported basic Arabic literacy. Physical fatigue and linguistic difficulties in reading kitab gundul (unvowelized Arabic texts) and memorizing mufrodat (vocabulary) emerged as major barriers. External factors such as an intensive curriculum and morning muhadatsah (conversation) activities facilitated literacy development, whereas inconsistent implementation of the Arabic-speaking ecosystem (bi'ah arabiyah), limited digital infrastructure, and weak institutional collaboration hindered language acquisition. The novelty of this study lies in identifying a sustainable reinforcing cycle between personal motivation and the ecosystem of a rural pondok pesantren. The findings suggest that pondok pesantren should systematically expand mandatory Arabic-speaking zones to strengthen the natural internalization of students’ basic Arabic literacy.

Abstract

Teachers’ work discipline is a strategic aspect in supporting the effectiveness of educational implementation and the achievement of school organizational goals. However, empirical conditions in junior high schools across Kamang Baru District, Sijunjung Regency indicate that teachers’ work discipline remains suboptimal, as reflected in tardiness, low compliance with teaching schedules, and the less-than-optimal implementation of administrative duties. This study aims to analyze the influence of principals’ role modeling and supervision on teachers’ work discipline. The study employed a quantitative approach using an associative method through an explanatory research design. The sample consisted of 64 teachers selected through random sampling from a total population of 174 teachers. Research data were collected through questionnaires that had met validity and reliability criteria, and were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics through simple linear regression and multiple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The findings reveal that principals’ role modeling has a significant effect on teachers’ work discipline, contributing 21.4% and categorized as moderately strong. Principals’ supervision also has a significant effect on teachers’ work discipline, contributing 18.1% and categorized as low. Simultaneously, principals’ role modeling and supervision have a significant effect on teachers’ work discipline with a total contribution of 25.1%. These findings confirm that the effectiveness of school leadership through strengthening role modeling and optimizing supervisory functions plays an important role in improving teachers’ work discipline as part of strengthening effective school governance.

Abstract

Differences in i'rab analysis in Qur'anic exegesis have the potential to produce variations in meaning that impact theological, legal, and semantic aspects; however, comparative studies on its application in classical and contemporary exegesis remain limited. This study aims to analyze the comparative use of i'rab in Tafsir Al-Tabari and Tafsir Al-Mishbah and to explain its implications for variations in the meaning of the Qur'an. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research through a comparative (muq?ran) method. The data were analyzed based on five purposefully selected verses, including: Surah Ali ‘Imran [3]: 7, Surah Al-Ma’idah [5]: 6, Surah Al-Waqi’ah [56]: 79, Surah Al-A?zab [33]: 33, and QS Al-Baqarah [2]: 37. The analysis involved comparing i'rab forms, linguistic arguments, the use of qira'at and riwayat, as well as their implications for interpretation in both exegetical works. The results of the study show that in QS ?li 'Imr?n [3]: 7 and QS Al-Ma’idah [5]: 6, differences in i'rab have direct implications for theological interpretation and the establishment of legal rulings, whereas in QS Al-Waqi’ah [56]: 79, QS Al-A?zab [33]: 33, and QS Al-Baqarah [2]: 37, the function of i'rab develops through syntactic relations, the determination of referents, and the elaboration of meaning. Al-Tabari tends to use i'rab as the basis for tarjih, combined with qira'at and riwayat, whereas Quraish Shihab integrates grammatical analysis with historical, social, and contextual approaches. This study shows that i'rab not only serves to explain grammatical structure but also forms the basis for the formation of variations in meaning in accordance with each exegete’s methodological orientation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of Sumbang Duo values in the Arabic speech of female mahasantriwithin a local wisdom-based Arabic language learning program at Ma'had Al-Jami'ah UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, using 60 Arabic utterances as the data, which were analyzed based on John Searle’s Speech Act Theory. The analysis focused on identifying speech act types, illocutionary functions, and the representation of Sumbang Duo Baleh values. The findings reveal that directive speech acts predominated in the mahasantri's utterances, with prohibitive illocutionary acts emerging as the most frequently employed form. The representation of Sumbang Duo Baleh values was classified into five cultural themes: communication ethics, personal conduct ethics, appearance ethics, social relationship ethics, and responsibility ethics. These findings demonstrate that Arabic language learning not only fosters linguistic competence but also serves as a medium for representing local cultural values through communicative practices. This study contributes to the growing body of research on local wisdom-based Arabic language learning by demonstrating how cultural values are realized through speech acts in authentic language use.

Abstract

The transformation of the Arabic language curriculum in Islamic school (madrasah) is not determined solely by regulatory changes, but also by the extent to which these regulations can be translated into coherent teaching materials. This article aims to analyze the transformation of the Arabic language curriculum in madrasah from Ministry of Religious Affairs regulations into teaching modules, with particular emphasis on the coherence of objectives, content, learning processes, evaluation, and value integration. This study employed a qualitative approach using document analysis. The data were drawn from madrasah curriculum regulations, ranging from Permenag Nomor 2 Tahun 2008 to KMA Nomor 1503 Tahun 2025, as well as the Arabic language teaching module for Grade IX at MTsN 2 Payakumbuh. The data were analyzed through reduction, categorization, coherence mapping, and theoretical synthesis. The findings indicate that the Arabic language curriculum has shifted from a structural-grammatical orientation toward learning that is more communicative, contextual, value-based, reflective, and authentic. At the teaching module level, this transformation is reflected in the strengthening of learning outcomes, life-related themes, active learning activities, differentiation, projects, authentic assessment, Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin Student Profile, and Love-Based Curriculum. However, several parts of the module still show an administrative tendency, particularly in the formulation of objectives and assessment. These findings highlight the need to develop Arabic language teaching modules that not only fulfill administrative formats, but also strengthen the relationship among learning outcomes, materials, activities, assessment, and values, so that regulations are manifested as meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

Students' learning motivation has recently declined because teachers have limited control over the learning environment, even though many references are now available as guidelines or sources for introducing learning materials, including YouTube-based resources. This study aimed to examine the use of YouTube-based media and learning in relation to students' learning motivation. A quantitative method was employed; data were obtained through interviews and questionnaires, with the questionnaires distributed online. The findings showed that YouTube-assisted learning media could increase students' learning motivation, as reflected in improved learning outcomes. This study concluded that using YouTube as a learning medium was effective and efficient, as demonstrated by the finding that 90% of students obtained the highest scores. The study was limited to the YouTube learning environment, although many other learning environments could be used to improve students' speaking skills. Future researchers are expected to conduct studies related to students' learning motivation by using different learning environments. This study also recommends that future researchers investigate learning motivation through YouTube.
