Abstract

This study presents a novel approach to the automated detection of road surface defects using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and advanced image processing. The research background highlights the critical need for efficient and safe road infrastructure maintenance. Traditional methods, which rely on manual visual inspections, are often time-consuming, expensive, and expose inspectors to traffic risks. The primary objective is to design and validate an automated system for identifying and classifying various road surface defects, such as potholes, cracks, and rutting. The system aims to leverage aerial imagery captured by UAVs and process it with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The research seeks to demonstrate a solution that is faster, more accurate, and safer than manual inspection methods, paving the way for proactive road maintenance. The research methodology involves three key stages: data acquisition, model development, and validation. High-resolution images of various road defects are captured using a UAV. These images are then used to train a custom-designed CNN model. The model is trained to recognize and classify different types of defects with high precision. The results indicate that the combination of UAVs and CNNs is a robust and effective solution for road monitoring. The conclusion is that this automated system provides a scalable, safe, and highly accurate method for road surface defect detection.

Abstract

Timber has long been a cornerstone of the global economy, serving as a key raw material in construction, furniture manufacturing, and paper production. However, the growing concerns over deforestation, climate change, and resource depletion have raised questions about the sustainability of timber production and its long-term impact on the environment. Understanding the role of timber in the global economy from a sustainable perspective is crucial for balancing economic development with environmental conservation. This study aims to explore the economic importance of timber in various industries and evaluate its role in sustainable development. It seeks to assess the current trends in timber production and consumption while identifying the challenges and opportunities for promoting sustainable practices in the timber industry. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis of global timber trade statistics with qualitative case studies of sustainable forestry practices. Data from international trade reports, environmental NGOs, and industry surveys were analyzed to evaluate the economic contribution of timber and its environmental impact. The results reveal that timber remains a vital economic resource, contributing significantly to the global GDP, particularly in developing countries. However, unsustainable logging practices threaten forest ecosystems, which necessitates urgent policy interventions. The study highlights successful examples of sustainable forestry management and certification systems that can mitigate the negative environmental impacts of timber production. The findings suggest that while timber continues to be economically significant, sustainable forestry practices are essential for ensuring the long-term viability of the timber industry. Recommendations include strengthening international regulations, promoting sustainable forestry certification, and investing in forest restoration initiatives.

Abstract

In the hyper-competitive digital economy, the survival and growth of startups are intrinsically linked to their capacity for continuous innovation. While leadership is acknowledged as a critical driver of innovation, there is a limited understanding of how creative leadership specifically manifests and evolves over time within the volatile startup environment. This study aims to address this gap by longitudinally exploring the dynamics of creative leadership and its influence on innovation management processes within a digital startup. It seeks to identify the key leadership behaviors that foster a sustainable innovation culture and to understand how these behaviors adapt to the startup’s developmental stages. Employing a qualitative longitudinal case study approach, this research tracked a single digital startup over a three-year period. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the founding team and employees, direct observation of team meetings, and an analysis of internal documents related to project development and strategic planning. Key practices identified include fostering psychological safety, championing nascent ideas, and strategically allocating resources for experimentation. These leadership practices directly correlated with the development of an agile and resilient innovation management system. The study concludes that effective creative leadership in digital startups is contingent on the leader’s ability to adapt their style to the organization’s evolving needs.

Abstract

Public health governance has become a critical determinant of societal resilience as recent global health crises have demonstrated that effective emergency responses depend not only on healthcare capacity but also on institutional legitimacy, transparent decision-making, and public trust. Persistent variation in policy compliance and crisis outcomes across countries has intensified interest in understanding how governance quality influences collective behavioral responses during public health emergencies. This study aimed to examine the relationship between public health governance, institutional transparency, social trust, and community resilience across diverse national contexts. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed involving 3,600 respondents from twelve countries representing different governance systems and public health capacities. Quantitative data were collected using validated measures of governance effectiveness, institutional trust, policy compliance, communication credibility, healthcare preparedness, and community resilience, and analyzed through multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, mediation analysis, and hierarchical regression. Qualitative evidence was obtained through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, policy document analysis, and institutional case studies, followed by thematic interpretation. Findings revealed that governance effectiveness significantly strengthened institutional trust, while transparent communication and information credibility enhanced policy compliance, vaccination acceptance, and community resilience. Community resilience further reinforced the positive relationship between institutional trust and behavioral compliance during health emergencies. Results indicate that sustainable public health governance requires coordinated institutional leadership, evidence-based communication, transparent policymaking, and meaningful public engagement. The proposed governance framework offers practical guidance for strengthening institutional resilience and social trust during future global health crises.

Abstract

This study examines the application of cold chain technology in the storage and distribution of agricultural products in Saudi Arabia, especially in the face of extreme climate challenges and distribution in remote areas. The purpose of the study is to identify the impact of cold chain on product quality, distribution efficiency, and product competitiveness in the international market. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative with data collection through interviews, observations, and secondary data analysis from industry reports and government policies. The results show that the implementation of cold chain reduces the rate of product damage by 30% and increases the export of fresh products, but there is still a gap between urban and rural areas in terms of access to cold chain infrastructure. In conclusion, cold chains play an important role in supporting food security and the sustainability of the agricultural sector in Saudi Arabia, but further infrastructure investment and training are needed to expand its adoption across the country's territory.

Abstract

materials for photonic devices that can conform to non-planar surfaces. Quantum dots (QDs) are ideal candidates due to their size-tunable emission and high quantum yields, but their integration into durable, flexible platforms remains a key challenge. This study aimed to develop and characterize highly luminescent and mechanically flexible quantum dot-embedded polymer films as a robust platform for next-generation photonic applications. We fabricated composite films by embedding cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) core-shell QDs into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer matrix via solution casting. The structural, optical, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and cyclic bending tests. The results showed that TEM analysis confirmed a uniform dispersion of QDs within the PDMS matrix without aggregation. The composite films exhibited intense, stable photoluminescence, retaining the characteristic sharp emission of the colloidal QDs. Crucially, the films demonstrated exceptional mechanical flexibility, maintaining over 95% of their initial PL intensity after 1,000 bending cycles to a 5 mm radius. The optical properties remained stable under various strain conditions, proving the effective protection afforded by the polymer matrix. This work successfully demonstrates a scalable method for producing high-quality, flexible photonic materials.

Abstract

Chemotherapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment, yet patient responses vary significantly. Understanding the molecular basis of this variability is crucial for optimizing therapy. To predict patient response to chemotherapy using gene expression analysis, aiming to improve personalized treatment strategies. A prospective cohort study involving high-throughput RNA sequencing and microarray analysis was conducted on tumor biopsies and blood samples from patients undergoing chemotherapy. Differentially expressed genes were identified and correlated with treatment outcomes. Gene expression profiles of ABCB1, TP53, BRCA1, ERBB2, and BCL2 were found to significantly predict chemotherapy response. Patients with high expression of these genes showed better treatment outcomes. In vitro and in vivo models validated these findings, confirming the predictive power of these gene signatures. Gene expression analysis provides valuable insights into predicting chemotherapy response, facilitating personalized cancer treatment. Further clinical trials are necessary to validate these biomarkers and develop accessible diagnostic platforms.

Abstract

Background. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology, bringing unprecedented opportunities and ethical challenges. The growing autonomy of AI systems raises questions about moral responsibility, bias, and social impact, which require a philosophical exploration to address these issues comprehensively. Purpose. This study aims to explore the ethical dimensions of AI by focusing on algorithmic bias, moral responsibility, and social impact. Through a philosophical lens, the research seeks to identify key challenges and propose frameworks to bridge the ethical gaps in AI development and implementation. Method. The research adopts a qualitative approach by analyzing 15 purposively selected academic sources. These include peer-reviewed journal articles, policy reports, and books discussing AI ethics. A conceptual framework was developed to evaluate algorithmic bias, moral responsibility, and social impact, using thematic analysis to synthesize insights from the literature. Results. The findings reveal that algorithmic bias stems from unrepresentative training data, reinforcing historical injustices. Moral responsibility in AI development becomes complex due to the involvement of multiple actors, requiring new ethical frameworks. AI's social impact, particularly on inequality and access, highlights the urgent need for regulations to mitigate negative effects. Case studies in recruitment, healthcare, and criminal justice systems illustrate the real-world implications of these issues. Conclusion. This study underscores the importance of integrating ethical considerations into AI design and deployment. Philosophical perspectives provide valuable insights into addressing algorithmic bias, defining moral responsibility, and understanding social impacts. Future research should focus on empirical studies and the development of global ethical regulations to guide AI use responsibly.

Abstract

Background. Plastic pollution has become a defining environmental challenge for coastal communities in Southeast Asia, particularly in North Java, where rapid urbanization, industrial activities, and waste mismanagement exacerbate marine degradation. Local communities are not merely passive victims of this ecological crisis; they actively navigate, reinterpret, and resist the social and environmental impacts of plastic waste. Purpose. This study aims to investigate how a North Javanese coastal village adapts to and challenges marine pollution through cultural practices, social organization, and collective environmental action.   Method. An ethnographic research design was employed, integrating participant observation, in-depth interviews, household surveys, and environmental field notes to generate a multi-layered understanding of community responses. Results. The findings reveal three central patterns: first, adaptive behaviors emerge through pragmatic strategies such as waste repurposing and informal recycling networks; second, environmental degradation reshapes local cosmologies and cultural narratives surrounding cleanliness, morality, and human–nature relationships; third, forms of resistance manifest through community-led cleanups, youth environmental activism, and negotiations with local authorities and industries contributing to pollution. Conclusion. The study concludes that community adaptation and resistance are driven by intertwined ecological, economic, and cultural dynamics, illustrating that environmental crises are socially mediated phenomena requiring context-sensitive interventions.

Abstract

Background. Climate change poses escalating risks to public health, particularly for communities with limited adaptive capacity and high exposure to environmental hazards. Community-based health interventions have emerged as a promising approach to enhance climate resilience by integrating local knowledge, participatory governance, and context-sensitive public health strategies. These interventions shift the focus from top-down responses to locally driven adaptation, positioning communities as active agents in managing climate-related health risks. Purpose. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of community-based health interventions in strengthening climate resilience and empowering local communities through integrated adaptation and public health strategies. The research seeks to identify key mechanisms, outcomes, and enabling conditions that support sustainable and equitable health resilience at the community level. Method. A qualitative analytical design was employed, utilizing an integrative review of peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, and selected case studies related to community-based climate-health initiatives. Data were analyzed thematically to assess intervention models, governance structures, community participation, and health outcomes. Results. The findings indicate that community-based interventions enhance adaptive capacity by improving health awareness, strengthening social capital, and fostering locally relevant adaptation practices. Programs that combine public health services, environmental management, and community engagement demonstrate greater effectiveness in reducing vulnerability to climate-related health risks. Conclusion. The study concludes that community-based health interventions represent a critical pathway for achieving climate resilience. Empowering local communities through participatory and integrated strategies not only improves health outcomes but also supports sustainable and inclusive climate adaptation efforts.
