Abstract

Balanced nutrition is a key factor in maintaining health and preventing various nutrition-related diseases. An imbalance between nutrient intake and requirements can lead to malnutrition, either in the form of undernutrition or overnutrition. This condition contributes to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Good nutritional knowledge plays a crucial role in shaping healthy eating patterns and maintaining optimal nutritional status. Additionally, various factors such as dietary reference intake, nutrient absorption physiology, and intake control also influence an individual's nutritional balance. Physical activity also plays an important role in maintaining energy balance and body weight, thereby helping to prevent malnutrition and health disorders. This article reviews various aspects of balanced nutrition, including fundamental concepts, factors influencing nutritional status, health risks associated with nutritional imbalances, and the role of physical activity in maintaining nutritional balance. A deeper understanding of these aspects is expected to raise awareness of the importance of balanced nutrition in daily life.

Abstract

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) constitute a major public health burden in Nigeria, where unhealthy dietary behaviour is a leading modifiable risk factor. Commercial drivers are a high-risk occupational group with limited access to structured health education. Aims: This study assessed the effect of a Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB)-based intervention on unhealthy dietary behaviour among commercial drivers in Sabon-gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Methods: A pre-test post-test two-group quasi-experimental design was employed. Fifty commercial drivers were recruited from two motor parks using multistage sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). The experimental group received six weekly one-hour TPB-based health education sessions delivered in Hausa; the control group received a cholera prevention placebo. A validated 14-item questionnaire (Cronbach's α: 0.784–0.893) measuring the four TPB constructs was administered at baseline and post-intervention. Data were analysed using Fisher's Exact Test and Mixed ANOVA (α = 0.05). Results: At baseline, both groups scored below the decision mean of 3.0 across all four TPB constructs. Post-intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvements in attitude (M = 4.39), subjective norms (M = 4.04), perceived behavioural control (M = 3.06), and behavioural intention (M = 4.00), all exceeding the decision mean. All Time × Condition interaction effects were statistically significant (p < 0.001) with substantial effect sizes (η² = 0.40–0.55). No significant improvements were observed in the control group. Conclusion culturally appropriate, Hausa-delivered TPB-based intervention significantly improved all four TPB constructs related to unhealthy dietary behaviour. Such theory-driven interventions should be integrated into workplace wellness programmes for commercial drivers. Abstract

Multidrug Resistant Organism (MDRO) infections have increased significantly worldwide, which can result in increased morbidity, mortality, and cause outbreaks that decrease hospital performance. Adhesion-colonization of MDROs can occur on non-surgical invasive equipment, which inpatients are usually given. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between non-surgical invasive measures and the discovery of MDRO infections in inpatients at RSUD Banten. This study is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The research data used were medical record data of inpatients who had microbiological culture examination results at the RSUD Banten’s laboratory in the period January 2023-December 2023. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling with a sample size of 162 patients and used the chi square test in the form of univariate and bivariate analysis. There was a significant association (p=0.009) between non-surgical invasive measures and the discovery of MDRO infection in hospitalized patients at RSUD Banten (OR 2.580; 95% IC 1.246-5.341). Hospitalized patients who undergo non-surgical invasive measures have a higher risk of 2.580 times to be identified with MDRO infection, compared to hospitalized patients who do not undergo non-surgical invasive measures. Keywords : Non-surgical Invasive Measures, Infection, Multidrug Resistant Organism (MDRO), MDRO Infection

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the leading causes of disability and reduced work productivity worldwide, particularly among workers engaged in static occupational activities such as administrative staff. This study aimed to analyze the association between obesity, represented by body mass index (BMI) as a quantitative indicator, and LBP among administrative staff at RSUD Banten. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from February to March 2026. A total of 84 administrative staff were recruited using consecutive sampling. BMI was obtained from direct anthropometric measurements, and LBP was assessed using a single closed-ended question regarding the presence of pain or discomfort in the lower back within the past 12 months. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test following a non-normal distribution of BMI confirmed by the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. This study was conducted with ethical clearance number 44/UN43.20/KEPK/2026. The mean BMI of respondents was 25.50 ± 4.39 kg/m², with a median of 25.2 kg/m²; 50.0% were classified as obesity class I–II based on the WHO Asia-Pacific criteria. The prevalence of LBP was 40.5% (n=34). The median BMI was 25.67 kg/m² in the LBP group and 24.86 kg/m² in the non-LBP group. The Mann–Whitney U test yielded p = 0.529 with an effect size of r = 0.069, indicating a trivial and non-significant difference. Obesity represented by BMI was not significantly associated with LBP among administrative staff at RSUD Banten.

Abstract

Lung cancer is a condition that has a risk of co-infection. Conditions such as immunodepression, neutropenia, and other co-morbidities such as smoking and COPD are also risk factors for infection, especially lower respiratory tract infections. Pneumonia is an infection that often occurs in lung cancer. Impaired immunity, malnutrition and anatomical abnormalities in lung cancer can cause pneumonia-causing pathogens to enter and colonize the lower respiratory tract. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza and gram-negative bacilli are bacteria that often cause pneumonia. Fever, productive cough with purulent sputum and shortness of breath are classic symptoms of pneumonia which also occurs in lung cancer with pneumonia. Radiographic images, laboratory analysis and microbiological tests are modalities in establishing the diagnosis. Antibiotics are the main therapy in the management of lung cancer with pneumonia adjusted to each individual and the accompanying risks.

Abstract

Cholelithiasis is a condition where stones form in the gallbladder or bile ducts and its prevalence is increasing in Indonesia. Various risk factors have been identified, with high Body Mass Index (BMI) being one of the dominant risk factors. This study aims to analyze the relationship between BMI and the incidence of Cholelithiasis in various age groups at Banten Regional Hospital. The study used a case-control design with 80 respondents (40 cases and 40 controls) taken from the medical record data of Banten Regional Hospital for the period January 2023-May 2024. Data analysis used Chi-Square test with a significance level of α=0.05. The results showed that in the case group, the majority of respondents had excessive BMI (≥23 kg/m²) as much as 75.0%, while in the control group as much as 42.5%. There is a significant relationship between BMI and the incidence of Cholelithiasis (p=0.025) with a risk of 4.182 times greater in patients with excess BMI than underweight BMI. Analysis in various age groups showed that the relationship between BMI and Cholelithiasis was significant in the young adult age group (18-40 years) with p=0.039, but not significant in the middle adult age group (41-60 years) and the elderly (>60 years). In conclusion, excess BMI is a significant risk factor for Cholelithiasis, with a stronger association in the young adult age group. This study provides scientific evidence of the importance of weight management in Cholelithiasis prevention strategies, especially in the young adult age group.

Abstract

Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) is one of the most common occupational skin diseases among nail art workers due to frequent and direct contact with chemical irritants such as acetone, ethyl acetate, methacrylic acid, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, and quaternary ammonium compounds. This study aims to evaluate a case of ICD in a nail art worker and to explore its association with occupational exposure. The research was conducted using a case study method, applying the seven-step approach to diagnosing occupational diseases, which includes medical history, physical examination, and a review of relevant literature. A 28-year-old woman who had been working in a nail art salon for three years presented with painful sensations on the fingertips of both hands, accompanied by dryness, cracking skin, and mild itching—especially after contact with acetone-based nail polish remover. Based on clinical evaluation, occupational history, and supporting scientific references, the patient was diagnosed with ICD as an occupational disease. Repeated exposure to acetone was found to have a strong association with the onset of symptoms. The diagnosis also considered the duration of employment, length of exposure per session, infrequent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the absence of relevant non-occupational risk factors. This study concludes that the ICD in this patient is an occupational disease. Education and the consistent use of PPE are essential for preventing and controlling recurrence
