Abstract

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a well-known acute phase inflammatory biomarker that can rise dramatically in response to inflammation. In reproductive-age women, several estrogen-related conditions are associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, wherein CRP may serve as a useful marker. This literature review focuses on the role of CRP in conditions influenced by estrogen – notably polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with an emphasis on findings from the last 10 years and data pertinent to Indonesian women. A systematic search of PubMed and Scopus was conducted for 2015–2025 studies on CRP in these conditions. Key findings include evidence of moderately elevated CRP levels in women with PCOS (even after controlling for obesity), Additionally, normal menstrual cycle variations and premenstrual syndromes have been linked to fluctuations in CRP. These findings underscore CRP’s potential as a non-specific marker of inflammation in estrogen-related gynecologic conditions. However, the utility of CRP for diagnosis or prognosis in these conditions is limited by its lack of specificity. Further research, particularly in Indonesian populations, is needed to clarify CRP’s clinical value in managing estrogen-related disorders.

Abstract

Abstract: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a neuropathy disorder commonly observed in workers who engage in repetitive and high-intensity hand or wrist movements, such as cutting, sewing, gluing, or pressing. Prolonged exposure to these activities can increase pressure on the median nerve, leading to symptoms of pain, tingling, numbness, and hand weakness.Case Report: A 31-year-old woman worked as a production operator in the stock fitting department of a footwear factory for 11 years, presented with tingling, numbness, and weakness extending from the wrist area to the fingers of both hands, especially affecting the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. These symptoms had progressively worsened over the past three months. Her job involved a rotational workflow requiring repetitive hand movements combined with physical exertion. Due to increasing discomfort and functional impairment, she had been unable to work for the past two weeks. Although right-handed, she frequently used her left hand for work-related tasks.Discussion: Occupational CTS in footwear factory workers is commonly associated with prolonged repetitive hand and wrist movements. Clinical examination revealed tingling, numbness, and weakness in the affected areas, particularly in the first three digits. Tinel’s and Phalen’s tests were positive, supporting the diagnosis of CTS. Occupational CTS was establish using the seven-steps occupational diagnosis method outlined by the Indonesian Association of Occupational Medicine Specialists (PERDOKI). This approach considers clinical assessment, occupational exposure history, work-related and non-work-related risk factors. Conclusion: Occupational CTS can be effectively diagnosed using a structured occupational diagnostic approach.  Preventive measures, including administrative controls such as task rotation, ergonomic workplace adjustments, and worker education on proper hand positioning, are essential to mitigate the risk of occupational CTS among workers engaged in repetitive manual tasks. Keywords: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), Median Nerve Compression, Ergonomic Interventions, Occupational diagnosis,

Abstract

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is a labor disorder in the form of rupture of the amniotic membrane before labor occurs. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2014, the incidence of PROM in the world is 5-10% of total deliveries, while the proportion of PROM in Indonesia based on Riskesdas 2018 is 5.6% and Banten ranks second with a proportion of 7% PROM which exceeds the national PROM average. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the duration of premature rupture of membranes and the APGAR score of infants in patients with COPD at Banten Hospital using a cross-sectional design through a retrospective approach with inclusion criteria in this study, namely mothers giving birth at Banten Hospital in the period January 1-December 31, 2023 who were diagnosed with COPD and exclusion criteria including, the presence of congenital malformations, giving birth to twins, fetal death during labor, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Sampling was done through proportional random sampling approach. Data processing was carried out using the chi-square or fisher statistical test using the p value limit of meaningfulness. 106 samples were obtained in this study. The proportion of PROM duration >12 hours was 53.8% and APGAR score <7 was 17%. Based on the results of statistical tests using chi-square there is a significant relationship between the length of PROM >12 hours with the 5th minute APGAR score in mothers with PROM at Banten Hospital in 2023 (p=0.025) with PR (IK 95%) 3.00 (1.06-8.54)]).

Abstract

ABSTRACTIrritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) is one of the most common occupational skin diseases among nail art workers due to frequent and direct contact with chemical irritants such as acetone, ethyl acetate, methacrylic acid, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, and quaternary ammonium compounds. This study aims to evaluate a case of ICD in a nail art worker and to explore its association with occupational exposure. The research was conducted using a case study method, applying the seven-step approach to diagnosing occupational diseases, which includes medical history, physical examination, and a review of relevant literature. A 28-year-old woman who had been working in a nail art salon for three years presented with painful sensations on the fingertips of both hands, accompanied by dryness, cracking skin, and mild itching—especially after contact with acetone-based nail polish remover. Based on clinical evaluation, occupational history, and supporting scientific references, the patient was diagnosed with ICD as an occupational disease. Repeated exposure to acetone was found to have a strong association with the onset of symptoms. The diagnosis also considered the duration of employment, length of exposure per session, infrequent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the absence of relevant non-occupational risk factors. This study concludes that the ICD in this patient is an occupational disease. Education and the consistent use of PPE are essential for preventing and controlling recurrence Keywords: Irritant Contact Dermatitis, Nail Art Workers, Occupational Diagnosis, Acetone

Abstract

Domestic violence is a serious public health issue with an increasing prevalence each year. In Cilegon City, domestic violence cases have increased significantly, but there is limited research on specific factors associated with domestic violence cases in this region. The research employed a cross-sectional design with a retrospective approach. The sample consisted of 43 violence cases handled at Cilegon Regional Public Hospital during 2021-2024, selected through purposive sampling. Variables studied included victims' educational level and triggering factors such as economic problems and infidelity. Data analysis was performed using chi-square test (p<0.05). Of the total cases studied, 55.8% were identified as domestic violence. The majority of victims (67.4%) had a high educational level (high school-university), and 27.9% of cases were related to triggering factors such as economic problems/infidelity. Statistical tests revealed no significant relationship between educational factors (p=0.594; OR=0.706; 95% CI: 0.196-2.544) or triggering factors (p=0.836; OR=1.153; 95% CI: 0.299-4.439) with the occurrence of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a complex phenomenon that cannot be explained solely through educational factors or specific triggers, but is influenced by various interacting factors. A multifactorial approach in handling and preventing domestic violence is necessary, along with further research using larger samples and examining other factors not covered in this study.

Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common bacterial infection after acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI), with a higher prevalence in women due to anatomical factors. One of the preventive efforts against UTI is the application of good personal hygiene practices. However, among adolescent girls, such practices are often neglected. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between personal hygiene behavior and UTI symptoms among high school female students in Serang City. A cross-sectional design with cluster sampling technique was employed across two high schools, with a total of 110 students participating. Data were collected using validated questionnaires on personal hygiene behavior and the “typical” subscale of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS), and analyzed using the Chi-square test at a significance level of p < 0.05. The majority of students demonstrated good personal hygiene behavior (74.5%), although a notable proportion still reported UTI symptoms (23.6%). The Chi-square test indicated a significant association between personal hygiene behavior and UTI symptoms (p < 0.01), with students exhibiting poor personal hygiene behavior being 12.5 times more likely to experience UTI symptoms compared to those with good hygiene behavior (OR = 12.5; 95% CI: 4.4–35). These findings suggest that poor personal hygiene behavior is associated with a higher risk of UTI symptoms, and that education, adequate sanitation, and supportive environments are essential measures to reduce UTI risk among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections continue to pose a significant public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. Understanding transmission pathways, host susceptibility, and associated risk factors is essential for explaining epidemiological patterns and designing effective control strategies. This article synthesizes current evidence on STH transmission pathways, host susceptibility, and associated environmental and behavioral risk factors based on epidemiological and immunological studies. STH transmission occurs through fecal–oral ingestion of infective eggs and percutaneous skin penetration by infective larvae in hookworm infections. Environmental contamination of soil and water, inadequate sanitation, and behaviors such as open defecation, walking barefoot, poor hand hygiene, and unsafe food handling increase exposure risk. Host susceptibility is influenced by age, immune regulation, nutritional status, genetic factors, and gut microbiota, resulting in heterogeneous infection intensity and clinical outcomes. Effective control of STH infections requires integrated approaches combining WASH interventions, health education, nutritional support, and regular deworming programs, while accounting for host biological variability to improve targeted prevention strategies.
