Abstract

Several studies indicated the low creative thinking skills of vocational high school students. The objective of this study is to describe the application of discovery learning models to improve the ability of the teachers to manage learning, student activities during the learning process, the student learning outcomes in terms of creative thinking skills, and the student responses to the learning activities. The research subjects were 35 students from the study program of Catering Food Service in a Public Vocational High School, SMK N 6 Surabaya. The lesson plan included the syllabus, learning implementation plans, student activity sheets, and assessment. Meanwhile, the data collection instruments included tests, observations, and questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The results showed that discovery learning model could improve the teacher's ability to manage the learning, students’ activities, learning outcomes of creative thinking skills, and students’ responses.

Abstract

Preliminary study in Trenggalek city showed that there was a mismatch between the students’ skills learned at vocational high schools with their fields of work. It indicated that the role of vocational career center as a mediator between school and industry have not maximally yet. This study aimed to (1) describe how the vocational career center do its jobdesk, (2) categorize its performance, and (3) find the deficiency from the implementation of a career center in vocational high schools. The data analysis used a descriptive analysis from both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The result of study showed that the jobdesk of career center were collecting graduates databases, grouping the students who want to look for a job or study to higher education, and facilitating the students and world of work in the labour recruitment process. The performance of career center in Trenggalek Regency was good. From some predictors, those were job vacancy information, cooperation with world of work, alumni networking, data collection, communication between alumni, and alumni contribution, the career center’s aspect that need to be upgraded was the cooperation with the world of work.

Abstract

Interactive learning media facilitate students to be understand and comprehend certain contents of engineering subjects. Therefore, this study aimed to develop e-instructional multimedia for students in the subject of basic electronics and electricity using adobe flash CS 5.5. This subject was selected to support the teaching-learning process at the Vocational Secondary Schools. There were five stages during the development of the learning media, including (1) analysis, (2) design, (3) development, (4) implementation, and (5) evaluation (ADDIE). Furthermore, 30 students in total were selected to test the media practicability. The results revealed that this multimedia is acceptable based on five criteria: creativity, affectivity, efficiency, interestingly, and interactivity with the scores of 76.8, 76.8, 71.5, 77.4, and 74.4 respectively. This study suggested the implementation of the e-instructional multimedia for further understanding its empirical application.

Abstract

An assessment instrument is one of the most important factors to guarantee objectivity, fairness, and accuracy in assessing the level of students' performances in the learning process. This study aims to produce an authentic assessment model in problem solving learning. The objectives of this studyare to examine: (1) the feasibility of the developed authentic assessment model in the aspects of practicality, effectiveness, and feasibility of assessment; and (2) the accuracy of the assessment results from the authentic assessment model. This study was a research and development that adopts the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) development model. The research subjects consisted of eight teachers and 44 students selected with a purposive sampling technique. This study was conducted in 4 Vocational High Schools in Yogyakarta. The research instrument validation was examined by expert judgment. The data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets. Its data wereanalysed with descriptive statistical techniques, inter-rater reliability, inter-item correlation, and intraclass correlation. The results of the study show that (1) the developed authentic assessment model was feasible to be implemented since it fulfilled the requirements of practicality, effectiveness and implementation; and (2) the level of accuracy of the assessment results from the authentic assessment model has a very good criteria with  κ mean  of 0.978.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing a test instrument to asses prospective vocational teachers’ critical thinking skills on Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming. This research and development study produced the test instrument that had been trialled to 68 Indonesian electrical engineering education prospective teachers at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. The method used was Research and Development by referring to the revised Bloom method and the adjusted Facione model. The instrument consisted of 40 items that were further analyzed using a classical test and item response approaches. Students' responses were analyzed using the computer program of a Test Analysis Program and ConQest. The item difficulty of classical test theory was represented by p value revealed based on prospective teachers’ correct answers. Parameter b referred to location parameter that conveyed the position of the item’s characteristic curve in relation to the ability scales. The benefit of this study was it can measure the level of critical skills, especially on the subject of PLC programming. The existing instruments only measure PLC programming skills in general but have not yet specifically reached the measurement of critical skills level.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the development process of graphic and parametric equalizer trainer media in the course of Audio System and to examine the quality of the media. The development process of the media referred to the model offered by Lee and Owens. The research procedures consisted of assessment/analysis, designing, implementation and evaluation. The results of the study showed that the percentages for the quality aspect of the media and the companion module were 4.31 and 4.42 respectively. Based on these two aspects, it was obtained the overall percentage that was equal to 4.36. Whereas from the process of the trial by the students, the percentages of the media and the companion module were 4.47 and 4.36 respectively. Thus the level of validity and feasibility of the media was categorized as very good.

Abstract

This study adopted the quasi-experimental research design, precisely, pre-test, post-test nonequivalent control group design. The population for the study was 210 National Technical Certificate (NTC II) furniture craft technology students (175 males and 35 females) in Technical Colleges. This study was carried out in Zamfara and Katsina State. The analysis was guided by three research questions and three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The data were obtained with Furniture craft technology Cognitive Achievement Test (FTCAT) and Furniture craft technology Interest Inventory (FTII). The lesson plan, FTCAT, and FTII were subjected to face and content validation by three experts. The instrument was trial tested on a sample of 22 NTC II furniture craft technology students of Government Technical College FCT-Abuja. Kuder-Richardson 20(K-R20) and the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient were utilized to establish the coefficient of internal consistency and stability of the FTCAT. The values were found to be 0.72 and 0.81 respectively. Data obtained from the administration of the instrument was examined with mean to answer the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) statistic was used to test the hypotheses. The results showed that the Challenge-based learning approach is more successful in enhancing the students' achievement in furniture craft technology than the Activity-based learning approach. It was recommended that the Ministry of Education and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) should organize workshops, seminars and in-service training for technical teachers regularly

Abstract

The researcher implemented the Student Centered Learning  with the following objectives: (1) to improve the achievementand the quality of the learning process inthe course of Electrical Installation and Machinery through the Cooperative Learning  cyclewith Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD); and (2) to describe the response of the students to the implemention. This study was conducted using the classroom action research approach in 2 cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The results showed: (1) the Cooperative Learning  cycle with STAD could improve the quality of the learning process, the students were not merely as the object but rather as the subject of the learning. The learning process comprised highly effective learning environment, interactive discussions, opinions sharing activities, motivation, cooperation and communication among the students. The improvement of the achievement was proved by the mean scores in the first and second cycle that were 69.05 and 76.25 respectively; and (2) the students’ feedbacksresulted from the closed questionnaire were 37.5% strongly agree and 62.5% agree to the implementation while from the open questionnaire, the feedbacks were 92.5% positive and 7.5% of the students said it was a waste of time.
