Abstract

The origin of religion remains a central and contested issue in the philosophy of religion and modern theology (kâlâm), frequently drawing skepticism from materialist and atheist perspectives. This foundational question shapes the identity of religion and determines whether it is viewed as divinely revealed or as a construct of human imagination and psychological needs. Theistic scholars assert that religion originates from a divine source, revealed through Prophets for the moral and spiritual guidance of humanity. In contrast, materialists and atheists, including prominent figures such as Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), argue that religion emerges from human psychological complexes, instincts, and social conditioning, denying any transcendent origin. Freud, in particular, attributes the genesis of religion to repressed desires and unresolved familial tensions, especially within the context of totemism and the Oedipus complex, thus rejecting any metaphysical or divine foundation. This article employs a descriptive-argumentative method and an analytical approach to examine and critically assess Freud’s theory on the origin of religion. The study highlights several conceptual and methodological flaws in Freud’s view, including the inadequacy of instinctual explanations for religious consciousness, the problematic generalization of Christian-specific myths, the irrationality of totemic belief systems, and the ethnocentric limitations of his framework. Furthermore, Freud’s theory stands in direct contradiction to key Islamic theological principles rooted in reason (ʿaql) and inspired revelation (naql), particularly as conveyed through the Qur’an and Hadith. Ultimately, this critique underscores the incompatibility of Freud’s reductionist account with both Islamic epistemology and the innate disposition of human spirituality (fitrah).

Abstract

This article identifies the effect of trust, brand awareness, and social piety before doing donation using the Fintech platform. Therefore, this explanatory research examined the influence of four variables. The data were collected through a purposive sampling technique involving 250 societies across Lombok Island as respondents, as well as applying a case study approach. The data analysis technique is implemented through SEM (Structural Equation Modelling). The article shows a positive and significant impact among trust, brand awareness, and social piety in donation decisions through the fintech platform. However, brand awareness and trust do not affect social piety. Hence, this article recommends the fundraising institutions that actively collect funds through fintech platforms to always prioritize the openness principle in managing public funds. A transparent attitude can increase public trust to utilize the platform whenever they want to channel funds spontaneously.

Abstract

Recently, there has been a phenomenon of reducing the level of Islamophobia of the world community towards Muslims around the world, including Muslims in the United States. Allowing Muslims to carry out worship in public or open space, and the election of Muslim politicians in a government and congressmen are clear evidences to this phenomenon. This research aims to deeply analyze the de-islamophobia factors in New York City, The United States from 2017 to 2023. The phenomenon of Islamophobia, rising sharply since the 9/11 tragedy, has now begun to experience a significant decline, especially in the 2017-2023 period. A qualitative method was applied with literature studies. The data were taken from online books, online journals, and other relevant references such as online news. The study found various causes of the decline: socio-culture, demographic, and political events that contribute to the acceptance of Islam in the United States. Especially since Joe Biden was inaugurated as the U.S. President, the decline in Islamophobia is increasingly visible, particularly in the political fields.

Abstract

This article discusses KH. Muhammad Luthfi Ghozali’s thoughts on laduni science, that it can be gained by anyone who has valid reason. Generally, Muslim intellectuals such as al-Ghazâlî and Suhrawardî believe that laduni is given specially for saints. This is qualitative-library research since the primary data are from “Mencari Jati Diri Volume 2” book. Authors employed content and critical analysis. The study shows that Luthfi Ghozali’s laduni science epistemology is vague. First, his concept that laduni is laddunîyah rabbânîyah science which is primarily about legacy. Those who want the knowledge must establish a spiritual relationship in the form of tawas{s{ul. On the other hand, legacy should be given effortlessly. The second vagueness is on the knowledge journey theory. He stated, both ways (of gaining knowledge) begin from senses; while in his definition, laduni directly gets into one’s soul. The last is about the causes of acquisition. The second cause explained that piety is a result of riyâdhâh, mujâhadah, and dzikr-those three should be the real causes of laduni. The third cause, nubuwah and walâyah, is defined inconsistently. On one hand, it is meant for the prophets and saints. On the other hand, he defines it as closeness.

Abstract

This article addresses the persistent inconsistency among Indonesian observers regarding the theoretical and practical criteria for determining the beginning of the Hijri month, specifically in the sighting of the hilâl (new crescent moon). While many observers focus primarily on the hilâl’s height above the horizon, they often overlook the critical factor of the elongation angle during observation. This inconsistency is reflected both theoretically and in practice, as evident in the official decisions issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Motivated by this issue, the study analyzes data from hilâl sighting testimonies recorded between 1962 and 2021 to critically evaluate the Ministry’s decrees. Employing a qualitative and descriptive research design, the analysis follows Millis and Huberman’s data classification framework combined with a scientific and doctrinal approach to systematically classify the decrees. The study reveals that 45% of the decisions are classified as ithbât maslahî (pragmatic confirmation), while 55% fall under ithbât takâmulî (ideal confirmation). This division underscores the need for a refined theoretical framework to guide the acceptance of hilâl testimonies and reduce the reliance on pragmatic rather than ideal evidence. Consequently, the study proposes the M2P theory, a method designed to improve the selection process of hilâl testimonies by integrating both height and elongation criteria. This theoretical advancement is urgent for ensuring greater consistency and reliability in the Islamic lunar calendar, which holds significant religious and social implications in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article describes the structure of the waqf concept from a worldview theory perspective. Worldview is simply a fundamental belief system concerning God, reality, man and truth, ethics, etc.; which serves as a guide for human life. A person's worldview will determine his behavior and actions. The next question is what kind of belief concept makes someone willing to do waqf? This article is a literature review that employs qualitative data with a philosophical approach. The data analysis method employs content analysis of data sources from the library. The result shows that the worldview analysis on waqf is a concept that was emerging from the Islamic worldview whose emergence was supported by various other fundamental concepts such as God, Prophets, Revelation, and Sharia (religion). It proves that the structure of the waqf concept is not as simple as handing over the property to Allah for the benefit of others. The peculiarity of such waqf concept seems impossible to be affirmed by the secular Western worldview, which is unable to affirm the concept of revelation, the Prophet, and religion. It also proves that the philosophical foundation of a waqf concept built on an Islamic worldview is very consistent, solid, and even has a broad spectrum that spans the worldly and the hereafter visions simultaneously.

Abstract

After the 9/11 tragedy in 2001, where terrorist attacks destroyed the WTC and the Pentagon, Muslims were widely represented as terrorists in American media. However, the representation of Muslims began to change from 2017 to 2022 in popular culture such as films and TV series. Instead of being depicted as terrorists or "bad guys," Muslims started to be portrayed more positively as "good guys" in some movies. It is worth questioning what factors or circumstances led to this change in the depiction of Muslims in American popular culture. Through a transnational approach, the authors find that the shift in perception of Muslim characters is a utilization of current popular culture trends, which emphasize diversity to meet American audience preferences, resulting in several globalization consequences. These consequences include the formation of a Muslim image adjusted to American standards, often conflicting with Islamic culture, and the homogenization of Muslim culture, which is often reduced or even omitted in Muslim characters in films. In short, the shift in perception of Muslim portrayals in American popular culture is based on three interrelated factors: capitalism, representation, and globalization.

Abstract

The concept of al-haqq represents a foundational yet underexplored dimension in the philosophical discourse of Sufism. Despite its centrality, systematic elaborations on al-h{aqq remain limited within classical Sufi scholarship. This article examines the significant contribution of Ibn Barrajân, a prominent Andalusian Sufi thinker, to the development of the concept through his unique tawhîd paradigm. Adopting a systems approach, the study analyzes Ibn Barrajān’s metaphysical interpretation of al-haqq, revealing a comprehensive framework that integrates ontology (unity of reality), epistemology (unity of knowledge), and axiology (unity of purpose). This triadic structure forms the basis of Ibn Barrajân’s multidimensional and goal-oriented view of existence, rooted in divine unity. Al-haqq, in his thought, emerges as the ultimate ontological reality and the objective of all intellectual and spiritual endeavors. Epistemologically, the knowledge of al-haqq is pursued through contemplation of the manifestations of God’s Names within cosmic signs, facilitated by the spiritual practices of tafakkur (reflection), tadhakkur (remembrance), tadabbur (deep thinking), and iʿtibâr (consideration). Axiologically, this knowledge is not merely theoretical but is to be actualized through the embodiment of wisdom (hikmah) as practiced in the sunnah. The study highlights the urgent need to revisit and engage with Ibn Barrajân’s integrative metaphysical insights, which offer a holistic model for understanding reality and its divine purpose. By articulating al- haqq as both the ground and goal of knowledge, Ibn Barrajān’s thought contributes significantly to Sufi philosophy and invites deeper exploration of divine-centered epistemology in Islamic intellectual tradition.

Abstract

The article examines the effect of productivity level towards the economic independence of women songket weavers and their religiosity level as a moderating variable. The research was conducted in Sukarara Village, Central Lombok, NTB Province, Indonesia, by involving 1,791 women songket weavers in the area. Cluster random sampling technique was applied, and the data were analyzed quantitatively using several tests, namely instrument research, classic assumption, Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) or interaction and statistic tests. The data processing reveals that the level of productivity significantly influences the economic independence variable. However, the religiosity level does not moderate the relation of the productivity level and economic independence of women songket weavers when making personal and mutual decisions. The significance value is 0.998 alpha 0.05, which indicates the existence of a moderation homologizer or potential moderation. Religiosity in this research is homogenous and influences no variable. It means that most of the women songket weavers have the similar level of religiosity; thus, it cannot affect their productivity level and economic independence.
