Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the make a match model assisted by question and answers card media on the ability to understand fairy tale material in class X students of SMAN 10 Garut. The subjects of this research were students in class X-3 as the experimental class and class X-11 as the control class. Data collection techniques in this study used tests and observations. Testing the data in this study used a true experimental design with the pretest-posttest control group type. The results showed that the t test in the experimental group and the control group was tcount ttable (17.708 1.995), so that a decision could be made that H0 was rejected. This shows that there is an influence of the make a match model assisted by question and answers card media on the ability to understand fairy tale material in class X students of SMAN 10 Garut.

Abstract

Writing a fairytale summary is one of the writing skills required in French writing competency level B1 DELF. To acquire this competence requires a lot of practice. The selection of appropriate learning models that can be used in writing summaries of fairytales must be adapted to the learning objectives to be achieved. This study aims to (1) describe the stages and the results of students' ability to write a summary of French fairytales during the implementation of Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition (CIRC) in learning to write a summary of French fairytales, and to evaluate the effectiveness of CIRC implementation. The method used in this research is the pre-experimental method using the one-group pretest-posttest research design and the research instrument is a test. The results that have been achieved in this study, namely the average student pre-test score was 76, while the post-test average score was 84.3, so there was an increase in score of 8.3. From the results of statistical calculations showed that the t-count value is 5.50 and the t-table value is 2.09, so that with a significance level of 5% and 19 degrees of freedom, so the working hypothesis in this study is accepted. It means that the application of CIRC is effective in learning to write a summary of fairy tales in French. Thus, through this research, students can better understand the fundamental rules and stages in writing a summary of a fairy tale in French.

Abstract

Comparative historical linguistic analysis is an approach in knowing the kinship relationship between one language and another. This study aims to determine the kinship between Sasak and Mbojo languages, by making a comparison between Sasak and Mbojo languages based on 200 Swadesh words. there were four informants used in this study to obtain the data, two speakers of Sasak and Mbojo languages respectively. The research instrument was the researcher herself assisted by a work analysis table listing 200 Swadesh vocabularies. This research is a qualitative-quantitative study using interview techniques in the process of obtaining the data. The results were then analyzed using the Lexicostatistical method, after which they were described. The results of this study indicate that Sasak language and Mbojo language are not only geographically close together, but the two languages are also related to one another with a kinship percentage of 19%. This is evidenced by the similarity of vocabulary in both languages. The Sasak and Mbojo languages are thought to have been a single language in 4256 – 3622 AD. Then the two languages, namely Sasak and Mbojo began to separate from their proton language between 2233 – 1599 AD (calculated in 2023). In Sasak and Mbojo languages, several phonemic correspondences are also found, namely /b/ ~ /w/, /t/ ~ /d/, /ʔ/ ~ /ø/, and /s/ ~ /ø/.

Abstract

Project based-learning (PjBL), focusing on students’ creativities in producing a particular task, has been variously integrated into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction to promote students’ skills. To support PjBL, teachers have integrated the use of technologies in the classroom since technologies enable teachers to modify teaching-learning activities. One of the modes of technology commonly applied is video project-based learning (VPBL) due to its benefits for both teachers and students. Research reveals the benefits of integrating PjBL and VPBL by focusing on the learning outcomes. In addition, self-reflection, as the ability of students to assess themselves regarding how and what they have learned and done in the tasks, might empower students to be better. This study highlights the benefits of self-reflection in English language learning through VPBL. VPBL empowers learners to create videos on topics of interest, using English as the communication medium. This study is a kind of literature research summarizing the findings of the previous studies on the utilization of self-reflection on students’ speaking projects. The study found that VPBL fosters self-reflection among learners, as they must plan, produce, and evaluate their work. Self-reflection is a crucial skill for language learning, as it helps learners to identify their strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and monitor their progress. The powers of self-reflection in English language learning using VPBL indicate that teachers must employ such cases in the classrooms.

This study also reveals the obstacles that are often faced in the use of EMI such as a lack of understanding of technical terms in the content course and teachers' low proficiency in English.  Therefore, it is expected that this study will offer recommendations from the perspectives of EFL practitioners in order to optimize the advantages of the EMI policy in an EFL context.

Abstract

Motivation is an element that affects a student's ability to learn. There are two different kinds of motivation: integrative and instrumental. Instrumental motivation moves learners to learn a language because of positive attitudes toward the target language, culture, community, way of life, literature, etc. Integrative motivation drives individuals to learn a language for practical reasons. This study aimed to determine the motivation for learning English as a foreign language among 12th-grade senior high school students and the factors that influence the students' motivation to learn English. The type of research used was a mixed method sequential explanatory model by conducting quantitative research first, followed by qualitative data collection. To collect the quantitative data, the researcher used questionnaires. Meanwhile, to manage the qualitative data, the researcher conducts semi-structured interviews. The result of the study shows that it was found that 12th-grade high school students have both integrative and instrumental motivation. Then, four factors influence the student's motivation, namely: the teacher, the method of teaching, which refers to the way that students are taught, the Atmosphere in class, and success in learning.
