Abstract

Transformative leadership, as an evolving paradigm in the context of the 21st century, offers unique insights into understanding and addressing the current challenges related to democracy. Transformational leadership in the Pancasila democracy in Indonesia, particularly among students, is not without challenges. One of the main obstacles faced is resistance to the old political culture, which tends to be authoritarian. Students, who should be agents of change, often get trapped in hierarchical thinking and are less open to change. This political culture hinders the spirit of inclusive and democratic leadership. This article aims to explore the role of transformative leadership in the 21st century in interpreting Pancasila democracy and addressing various issues arising in the context of democracy within student organizations. Through transformative leadership, this article offers solutions based on empowerment, active participation, and the development of members' capacities. Transformative leadership fosters an inclusive environment where individuals' voices are valued. This creates a strong foundation for resolving conflicts, building trust, and promoting sustained engagement. This article uses qualitative research with a descriptive approach. Transformative leadership has great potential to serve as a facilitator in addressing the democratic issues of the contemporary era. Through this approach, it is hoped that student organizations can build a stronger foundation for a more inclusive, dynamic, and sustainable democracy.

Abstract

Abstract The Arabian Peninsula has a long history of trade, where the arrival of Islam introduced economic principles that emphasized justice and social responsibility, expanding trade networks, strengthening political stability, and influencing international relations. The aim of this study is to explore and analyze how the economic principles in Islam shaped and directed the development of trade in the Arabian Peninsula and the significant impact they had on international relations at the time. The research methodology employed in this study uses a literature review approach to gather, analyze, and synthesize relevant information. This study will begin by exploring various secondary sources, including history books, academic journal articles, and historical documents discussing Islamic economic trade principles as well as the political and social developments in the Arabian Peninsula. These sources will be selected based on their credibility and relevance to the research topic. The findings of this research indicate that trade has played a central role in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, from the pre-Islamic period to the Ottoman Empire. Cities like Mecca and Medina became vital trade centers, influencing the economy, politics, society, and culture. Trade became the foundation for international relations, enriching the economy, and impacting diplomacy and cultural development.

Abstract

This study analyzes the framing of news regarding former corruption convicts as legislative candidates in the 2024 General Election on CNN Indonesia. The Supreme Court decision that allows former corruption convicts to run for legislative office has sparked controversy related to election integrity and moral standards of political leadership. This research aims to identify how CNN Indonesia constructs this issue through news framing using Robert N. Entman's model which consists of four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and suggest remedies. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a constructivist paradigm, analyzing three news articles published on August 22, 2022, through documentation techniques and systematic text coding. The findings reveal that CNN Indonesia consistently frames the Supreme Court's decision as a threat to democratic integrity by defining the issue as a moral problem and election quality risk, attributing the cause of controversy to the Supreme Court through regulatory contradictions, applying dominant negative moral evaluations considering the ineligibility of former corruption convicts without exploring alternative perspectives, and implicitly recommending solutions through regulatory reform and strengthening public selectivity. The framing pattern reflects CNN Indonesia's ideological position that prioritizes election integrity and leadership moral standards, positioning the media as a moral agent reinforcing anti-corruption norms in public discourse. This study contributes to understanding how Indonesian mass media construct political discourse about integrity and eligibility of public leader candidates in the context of electoral democracy still facing systemic corruption challenges.

Abstract

This study seeks to answer a central question concerning the moral and ethical boundaries for political parties that supported losing candidates in determining whether to join the ruling coalition or remain in opposition particularly when they had previously taken a strong stance against the candidate who is now in power. The discourse on coalition and opposition has been resurfaced and is frequently associated with ethical considerations in political practice. Parties that choose to join the government generally justify their decision based on maslahah murlahan as a means of promoting public welfare, while those that remain in opposition view the maintenance of checks and balances as another form of maslahat that must be upheld. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytic character, using a maslahat-weighing framework based on the perspectives of Islamic party elites in Lampung Province. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with six informants, namely provincial-level elites from the NasDem Party, PKB, and PKS. Secondary data were collected from documents, classical fiqh and ulus fiqh literature, and Islamic political studies. Data analysis was conducted through stages of data reduction, thematic categorization, data presentation, and inductive conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that both coalition and opposition represent legitimate political choices within a democratic system and are equally grounded in pragmatics as well as benefit considerations. Their distinction lies in the moral boundaries and social propriety aimed at public interest. Therefore, it is acceptable for coalition parties to occasionally reject government policies if they are deemed inconsistent with public benefit, just as opposition parties are not obliged to reject every outright government policy.

Abstract

The rapid development of e-commerce has transformed student consumption behavior, with Shopee becoming one of the most popular platforms due to its ease and speed of service. However, despite this convenience, many users still do not understand their rights as consumers, particularly regarding product authenticity, refund policies, and personal data privacy. This study aims to analyze students' level of understanding of government regulations regarding consumer protection in transactions on the Shopee platform. The method used was descriptive qualitative, with data collected through surveys and in-depth interviews with one hundred active Shopee student users from four universities in Bandar Lampung. The results showed that only 30% of respondents had a good understanding of consumer protection policies, while the other 70% still had little understanding. These findings indicate low legal and digital literacy among students as digital consumers, which makes them vulnerable to fraud and unfair business practices. This study concludes that improving digital and legal literacy for consumers is necessary to enable them to protect their rights independently. In addition, the government and e-commerce platforms need to strengthen regulations, public education, oversight, and collaboration in creating a fair and secure digital transaction ecosystem.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of Islamic parties in the Indonesia Onward Coalition after the 2024 elections and its impact on the quality of democracy in Indonesia. This research is a descriptive qualitative analytical-interpretive study, using primary data in the form of official documents from the four main Islamic parties: PKB, PAN, PPP, and PKS, regulations, and jurisprudence, as well as secondary data in the form of scientific articles, previous research, and media reports, with data analysis using content analysis. The results show that most Islamic parties chose a political strategy by joining the government coalition to gain policy influence, rather than to fight for ideology. PKS is the only Islamic party that consistently remains in the opposition and functions as a counterweight to democracy. The involvement of Islamic parties in the Indonesia Coalition strengthens political stability, but also implements democratic oversight mechanisms due to the reduced role of the opposition.

Abstract

The conflict in Yemen epitomizes the geopolitical and ideological rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia two competing regional powers seeking to redefine the balance of influence in the Middle East. This study investigates why Yemen’s internal conflict has become prolonged and how regional power competition has entrenched instability across the region. Employing the Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT) and a Security Interconnectedness approach, the research adopts a qualitative, library-based descriptive-analytical design. The data were collected through systematic review and content analysis of secondary sources, including peer-reviewed academic journals, United Nations Security Council and Panel of Experts reports (2015–2023), Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) communiqués, and policy statements from Iranian and Saudi officials. The selection of documents followed relevance criteria linked to three RSCT dimensions: anarchic structure, regional polarity, and social construction. Findings show that Iran’s asymmetric intervention through support for the Houthis and Saudi Arabia’s coalition-based military response have transformed Yemen into a proxy arena linking regional conflicts in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. The 2023 Iran–Saudi rapprochement, while symbolically significant, has not yet restructured the underlying security logic of the region as mutual threat perceptions persist. The study contributes theoretically by expanding RSCT to incorporate identity and narrative as integral components of regional security, and empirically by providing updated insights into the post-2023 Middle Eastern order. Policy-wise, it underscores the need for inclusive, multi-level diplomacy that prioritizes human security and de-securitization of sectarian identities as prerequisites for sustainable peace in Yemen and the wider region.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of the Indonesian Army Engineer Company (Kompi Zeni TNI AD) – Garuda Contingent in MONUSCO in the United Nations peacekeeping mission under MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The research focus is directed at the contribution of this unit in supporting security sector reforms and post-conflict development in Beni Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This study fills a research gap related to the involvement of Indonesian military engineering units in peace missions, which has so far highlighted more aspects of diplomacy and infantry forces. The method used is descriptive qualitative with in-depth interview techniques, field observations, and documentation studies. Primary data were obtained through the direct experience of Zeni Company Task Force personnel in the field, while secondary data came from MONUSCO reports, UN publications, and academic literature. The analysis was carried out through data reduction, presentation, and triangulation verification to ensure the validity of the findings. The results of the study show that the TNI AD Zeni Company plays an important role in the development of strategic infrastructure such as the Beni-Eringeti-Kainama road and the Halulu bridge, which have a real impact on improving the security, mobility, and welfare of the local community. These findings confirm that the participation of the Zeni Company not only strengthens the effectiveness of MONUSCO's mandate in civilian protection, but also strengthens Indonesia's defense diplomacy and demonstrates a model of military-civilian synergy in realizing sustainable peace in Africa.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth the political thought of Imam al-Mawardi and its relevance to the contemporary political system, particularly in the Indonesian context. Through his main work Al-Ahkam al-Sultaniyyah, al-Mawardi views leadership as a collective obligation of the people (fard kifayah) to safeguard religion (hirasat al-din) and regulate worldly affairs (siyasat al-dunya). This study uses a qualitative approach with the Library Research method that combines primary sources from al-Mawardi's work and secondary sources from modern academic research. The analysis is conducted descriptively and analytically to find the relationship between classical Islamic political values and the Indonesian democratic system. The results of the study show that al-Mawardi's political thought demonstrates suitability with contemporary Indonesian politics in terms of the application of the division of legislative, judicial, and executive powers. The concepts of justice (al-'adl), trust (amanah), and benefit (maslahah) in al-Mawardi's thought align with the values of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, especially in realizing a just, ethical, and people-oriented government. The concept of shura can be equated with the principle of deliberative democracy, where deliberation leads to consensus, while ahl al-hall wa al-'aqd resembles a modern legislative body. More concretely, al-Mawardi's thinking provides practical frameworks for addressing Indonesia's pressing political challenges: his strict criteria for leadership selection requiring moral integrity, competence, and accountability offers a normative foundation for anti-corruption reforms and merit-based recruitment in public institutions. His concept of hisbah (public accountability) can strengthen civil society oversight mechanisms and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Furthermore, al-Mawardi's emphasis on maslahah (public welfare) as the ultimate goal of governance provides ethical guidance for policymaking that prioritizes collective benefits over partisan interests, thereby countering political pragmatism. His principle that a leader who violates trust must be removed resonates with contemporary demands for political accountability and impeachment mechanisms, offering Islamic ethical legitimacy to democratic checks and balances in Indonesia's constitutional framework.
