Abstract

Radicalism has a deep root in Islamic teachings. Amounts of  verses and traditions in the view of  literal-formalistic reading are inspiring to shape the selected teachings and the ownership of absolute truth. Both of these principles spring exclusive and superior attitude in the face against the other, also they position of  each dissident man as an enemy who must be conquered by any way, even violent way. This writing tries to analyze theological root of radicalism growing in the thought of Islamic sphere, as well as movements/organizations  that are representing the radical theology such as Jama’ah al-Ikhwa>n al-Muslimu>n.

Abstract

This article  discusses  the prominency  of Munawir  Sjadzali  and his thoughts in the vast forest of Indonesia’s contemporary  Islamic legal thoughts.  He  was  widely  famous  for  the  opinion  and  thoughts  he offered  suddenly  interested  public  spotlight.  Indeed,  controversies over his thoughts  took places and inevitably  came about. However, the building concept of the Re-actualization  of (Law) of Islam which is geneanologically  “derivative” of his thought remains a major leap forward  ideas  for  grounding  Islamic  values  of  the  archipelago  on earth, so that Islam is not only known as “Arab”. Islam is a universal religion that is not monopolized by one group of people (Arabs), but each (Muslim) is entitled and has the legitimate right to believe and practice what one believed to be true despite the teachings of Islam they are believing and performing look different from a similar practice in the other hemisphere. Therefore, the reform of tenets (law) of Islam according  to the socio-historical  background  is a sunnatullah.  The main points of this paper is focused on introducing the prominency of Munawir Sjadzali and his thoughts, then the explanation expanded to look at the socio-political background in which he gave rise his views. The study concludes  with a historical  analysis in the light of tarikh tasyri‘ as the first base of Munawir  Sjadzali’s  full flaged views and thoughts.

Abstract

In the radicalist circle, Islam is a source to legitimize their behavior, though it is counter productive with the Qur’an which not absolutely allow violence on behalf  of  God. This writing is a critic against its abuse of inter pretation. Thematic approach is applied to analyze verses which are usually used to justify violences. Surveying on the verses is a tool to analyze for the pur pose of finding true meaning of the text. The unproper inter pretation of  jiha>d (struggle) caused it trapped in violence and radicalism. Whereas the general context of  jiha>d does not relate with a war.

Abstract

Throughout the history of human life, poverty is a “plot of story” that could never be erased, and the history of human life is inevitably not free from the history of how people try various ways to overcome this problem. Alms giving (zakat) is one solution that Islam called upon to remove poverty and economic inequalities. Classical as well as Modern Islamic World has enacted various laws and run variety of alms (zakat) management patterns in order to alleviate such poverty. This article covers the application of such charity in the long history of alms giving, since the classical age of Islam to the realities of current application in modern   times   in   some   Islamic   countries,   with   main   focus,   the application  of  alms  in  Indonesia.  By  using  historical  investigation theory of Charles Peirce and truth deficit of Lieven Boeve, the authors  found  a  number  of  polarization  on  the  practices  of  alms withdrawal and its management in Indonesia which further led to a deficit or a reduction in the role and function of such alms itself, which once reached the golden age in the heyday of Islam. This happens due to many factors, including the ineffectiveness of the implementation of the Law of alms (zakat), the lack of trust in the institution of zakat, and the lack of awareness of those compulsory Muslims to give alm. Overcoming such a deficit, it needs integral and solid steps of thestate and society in the spirit of recontectualization of zakat.

Abstract

The phenomena of violence, terrorism, and interreligious conflict evolving some of  hard line muslims (radical) reveals critical question whether Islam is a real religion that is rah}matan lil‘a>lami>n. The flowing of hesitation of International society, the propaganda of mass media, and the tendentious accusation is pointed to Islam and muslims. To respond it, it is needed to read a new reading for Islam and to delve into its sources of  teachings in the view of  modest mysticism, smooth, love of peace, and anti-violence.

Abstract

Transnational ideology springs the faded attitude of  state defend. In another side, state defend is always connected with military. The concept of  jiha>d (struggle) in the Qur’an can be understood as an obligation to defend the state in all levels. The obligation could be in the form of guarding unity and integrity, culturalizing of  deliberation, struggling justice and maintaining freedom. The obligation of  state defend in the form of  physical form could not be conducted whether individually or collectively. This obligation is performed only if  a ruler commands to battle against, and when an enemy has besieged a region. If  defending Indonesia state is one of requirements for existence and glory of muslims in materializing Islamic values and universal of humanity, so struggling for state defend is a condition sine qua non

Abstract

Banten is unique compared to other places in Indonesia. It has a long tradition  of obedience  to Islam, and history of struggle  against  the Dutch  colonialism.  When  the  spirit  wind  of reform  hits  almost  all regions  of the archipelago  in early twentieth  century,  Banten  came through it in the 1920’s. This article attempts to trace the history of Islamic education reform in Banten. Then, by the use of comparative method, this paper has provided a better explanation of the first Islamic educational organization in Banten to apply modern educational system in the organization of education. In this context, the author examines two educational institutions that existed in Banten, namely Mathla’ul Anwar and Al-Khairiyyah  with the focus on aspects of reforms they suggested  to  do.  These  two  institutions  of  Islamic  education  are pioneers of Islamic education reform which succeeded in transforming the traditional  Islamic educational  institutions  of pesantren  into the form of madrasah schools, and later contribute to the birth of some leaders of Islamic education in all regions of Banten. Study of these two institutions is inevitably relevant and significant to understanding the phenomenon of Islamic education in Banten.

Abstract

Discourse of  Islam vis-a-vis state is not apart from complexity  of Arabic and Islamic reason. Muh}ammad ‘A<bid al-Ja>biri showed that complexity  from  sources  of  thought  of  contemporary  socio-political science and sources of  Arab-Islamic tradition itself. According to him, democratic leader type of  Prophet is only applicative for Mecca and Medina  society.  Both communities  are recognized  applying  nomadic tribe system, and recruitment of  their leader was based on an adagium primus inter pares, just for the best and highly capable man can be elected by community. The past tradition cannot be applied wholly to present day without considering its socio-cultural aspect.

Abstract

Even  though  experiencing  much  discrimination  in this country,  the existence of  local religion such as mysticism stream steadily grows and even still attracts many followers. Truth claim that is frequently voiced by formal religions such as Islam, Catholic, Christian, Buddha, Hindu and Confucius is not frightening to adherents of  local religion, even less converting to another belief. Interestingly, the adherents’ belief  of formal religion whether aware or not often has mixed with the belief  of local religion
