Abstract

Indonesia is a country with high religious, cultural, and social diversity. Freedom of religion, belief, and harmony between religious communities are important elements to maintain social stability. Normatively, protection for this has been regulated, but its implementation faces challenges, especially in Kulonprogo, which has significant social and religious diversity. This challenge is increasingly complex due to the construction of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), which has triggered massive population migration, bringing various religious and cultural identities and increasing the potential for social friction. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach that is exploratory in nature with primary and secondary data collected through interviews, field observations, and documentation. Data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman model, including data collection, reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that although the construction of YIA brings major challenges, Kulonprogo has strong social capital, such as mutual cooperation, deliberation, and mutual respect, which are the basis for harmony between religious communities. In addition, the presence of religious figures who actively promote tolerance is a key factor in reducing conflict. The principles of justice (‘adl) and reconciliation (islah) in Islam can be an ethical guide for building social harmony through collaboration between government, local communities, and religious figures.

Abstract

The phenomenon of terminal lucidity, which refers to the cognitive or physical clarity that occurs in individuals nearing death, has become an intriguing topic in medical and spiritual studies. This phenomenon is often seen as the individual's last opportunity to resolve worldly matters or convey a final message to their loved ones. In Islamic teachings, the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad describe the moments before death as containing profound meaning, one of which relates to the sudden clarity that emerges, providing an opportunity to interact with his followers. This study employs a qualitative method with a field study design, using data collection tools through observation and interviews with informants from the local community. The research findings indicate that the phenomenon of terminal lucidity in the community of Arosbaya Village is highly relevant to the hadith about the Prophet Muhammad experiencing clarity of mind before his death. The village community interprets terminal lucidity as a gift from Allah that provides individuals with the opportunity to settle their worldly affairs and convey their final messages before passing away. This study contributes to understanding how the “living hadith” is practiced and interpreted in a local context, particularly regarding the phenomenon of terminal lucidity. The findings also enrich Islamic scholarship by integrating theological perspectives with the empirical experiences of the community.

Abstract

The current development of digital technology has had a significant impact on various aspects of life, including the conduct of marriages. One phenomenon that has emerged is the marriage contract via video call, which allows couples separated by distance to conduct their marriage without having to meet face-to-face. However, this convenience has led to differing opinions regarding the validity of such marriage contracts. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the legitimacy of marriage ceremonies conducted via video call from the perspectives of Bahtsul Masa’il Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Majelis Tarjih Muhammadiyah Lampung. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive analytical comparative method. Data was collected through interviews as primary data and document analysis as secondary data. Data processing was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and inductive conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Bahtsul Masa’il NU Lampung committee considers marriage contracts conducted via video call to be invalid, as they are deemed not to meet the primary requirement of the physical presence of the parties involved. Conversely, the Majelis Tarjih Muhammadiyah Lampung committee provides a more flexible assessment, stating that marriage contracts conducted via video call can be valid if they meet the applicable requirements and conditions of marriage. These findings reflect the dynamics in the interpretation of Islamic law, which can adapt to technological developments while maintaining the fundamental principles of marriage contracts.

Abstract

Communication in the family plays a very important role in maintaining harmonious relationships between family members. In this case, the dynamics of communication between husband and wife often reflect social changes that occur in society. One interesting phenomenon to study is the dominance of communication by the wife in the family, which is influenced by social, cultural, educational, and economic factors. This study focuses on the community of Ranah Batahan District, West Sumatra, using a qualitative approach and case study design. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation, which were then analyzed using an interactive model and a phenomenological approach. The conclusions of the study were drawn inductively. The results of the study showed that the dominance of wife communication was influenced by economic factors (the wife as the main breadwinner), education, and the husband's passive or less assertive character. From an Islamic perspective, the wife's dominance in family communication does not conflict with the sharia, as long as it maintains the principles of deliberation, mutual respect, and fair division of roles according to the couple's abilities. Islam emphasizes justice, not domination, in household relationships. This finding confirms that the wife's dominance in communication is acceptable in Islam, as long as it does not cause an imbalance in responsibility and maintains family harmony in accordance with the guidance of the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Abstract

The phenomenon of Islamic spirituality in campus turns out to not only be a political and preaching movement, but is also related to “moral panic” that overwhelms the Indonesian society, especially after a massive penetration of  Western and East Asian pop culture. This article is the result of  an intensive research involving a number of  Senior High Schools students in Yogyakarta in 2008-2009. It was found that the flood of  pop culture since the 1970s have produced a counter reaction i.e. pop as a counter culture to the Islamic circle. Worries about the “ghost” of  pop culture among adolescent are shown in a guidance book of  Islamic preaching in school. Such moral panic recently caused the proselytizing movement in school or popularly called ‘Rohis’ to become more popular among Indonesian Moslem adolescent.

Abstract

Islamic  radical  movements  in Indonesia  are various.  Their slogans  about Islamic  union  are  refutable  by  heteroginities  of   groups  and  pattern  of movements. This article portrays about their variety of  movements. Broadly speaking , these groups are divided into two models. First, Islamic radical movements from their origins, such as HTI, Tarbiyah-Ikhwanul Muslimin and  Orthodox-Wahabi   Movement.  Second,  Islamic  radical  movements which have been metamor phosis, though ideologically they are in line with transnational Islamic radical movements in the Middle East. Examples of the second model are among others Front Pembela Islam (FPI), Laskar Jihad (LJ), Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI). These groups make Indonesian Islam more discursive in terms of  their contestation in gaining supports from Muslims in Indonesia.

In the current days of Indonesia, however, Islamic law is in part an unwritten  law, in addition to the trade mark that is still characteristically  attached to the Middle East. These are the reasons why a number of Indonesian Muslim scholars then gave rise to the indigenization  of Islamic law with a variety of ideas and namings. This paper attempts to depict the journey of the indigenization  of fiqh (Islamic law) discource  in Indonesia  by using analysis of social history. There were some important figures offered constructive  and  paradigmatic  jurisprudence  format  of  Indonesian fiqh. Then KH Sahal Mahfuz, the originator of an Indonesian social jurisprudence, and the last Gus Dur (Abdurrahman Wahid KH), who offered the genuine ideas of the indigenization  of Islam and contextualization  of Islamic jurisprudence.
