Abstract

Islam, more specifically, the Koran as its   original source, has infrequently  been  made  a scapegoat  in a number  of religious  and ethnicity contained-humanitarian  issues. This paper aims at tracing the Qur’anic  paradigm  of majority-minority  relations  in public  life which is heterogeneous.  By the use of humanistic  hermeneutics,  the author  affirms the existence  of Islam  as a humanistic  religion  that upholds human rights and dictates the minority-majority  relations set up in a frame of ummatan wasat}an. The author analyzes   the terms of human being in the language of the Koran, namely: al-insa>n, al- basyar and an-na>s which all shows the meaning of human equality in general, and furthermore,  protection of their individuals and   social rights in the frame of rah}matan lil ‘a>lami>n . According to the author, the term majority-minority  is a new concern in Islam. In the context of  community  of  religious  diversity,  Islam  introduced  the  concept of “People  of the Book”  regardless  of whether  or not non-Muslim religious groups are in the position of minority or majority. The term Ahl az\-Z|immah used to refer to non-Muslim communities living under Islamic government  can not also be equated with the term minority. The word “z\immi” which means those under protection denotes their assurance of security and  safety; hence  this could not be  interpreted as “helpless” or “inferiority”.

Abstract

The existence  of a community,  wherever  it my be, if it were looked as  dissimilar  as  their  environment,  especially  those  of  minorities, has always had a minor response from the communities  of majority. This is exactly experienced by the transgender community. Those of transvestites are being viewed negatively due to  the irregularities in the way they live and behave. This article tries to formulate a model of humanistic  proseltizing  that is not against  the existence  of such transgender community as objects of the proselytizing (mad’u). Based on a research  on the portrait  of transvestites  in the city of Kudus, Central Java, the author suggests that if the  notion to proportionally placed transvestites is overlooked or that the transgender community is out of consideration for being targeted community (mad’u), then we basically have missed the humanistic character of the mission itself. The  existence  of  transgender  in a religious  observance  is,  indeed, indifference as those of non-transgender community that needs touches of religious  values by a preacher. Denial of human existence to those of transgender (the humanist character) is fundamentally at odds with the mandate of Law Number 39 Year 1999 on Human Rights. If  this is the case, then, it needs to takes  that of humanistic proselytizing approach which  humanize all human beings, including those of transvestites.

Abstract

Minority is a concept that implies discrimination;  and it’s absolutely in contrast to the ideals of the nation that has been formulated in the 1945 Indonesian  Constitution.  As long as the use of this concept of minority is at the opposite of the majority, the problem of humanity will could never be resolved properly. Because, the term of minority, in any field, is very strongly colored of discriminatory meaning. Here, author argues that one of the platform to solve such problems of minorities is through understanding of the values developed in Islamic education. Islamic education  growing in the modern era is basically aimed at building a just, prosperous, and high dignity of people and society; and all human being are placed in the same position as the servant of Allah the almighty. So, any society with all their characters engage in the same position of a subject in education. Thus, human empowerment in the Islamic education paradigm has to be carry out in a fair way without any separation and discrimination between minority and majority.

Abstract

Indonesia as a nation of unity in diversity, composed of various ethnic groups, cultures, religions, social strata and others, is of course, in the hope of  harmony within diversities   in all terms of religion, politics, security, social class and as well as in education  in order to create state social justice and welfare as a reflection of the Pancasila state basis. One way to achieve the above dream is through multicultural education, as a means of building tolerance of ethnic diversity, cultural, and  religion  and  social  strata  of the nation,  because  multicultural education is a response to the diversity of school population growth, as the demand of equal rights for every group. While in the wider sense, multicultural education includes all students regardless of their groups of origins such as religion, gender, ethnic, racial, and cultural, and social strata. Ideally, however, the concept of multicultural education, is not solely directed to the areas of race, religion, and culture. Such a focus  once had been an emphasis  of intercultural  education  that emphasizes  improved  understanding   and  tolerance  of  individuals who come from minority groups integrated into the community of majority. Multicultural  education is actually an attitude of “caring” and willing to understand the discrepancy (difference) or the “politics of recognition”;  political  recognition  of the existence  of the people from minority  groups in all cases and concerns  to achieve  unity in diversity.

Abstract

RELIGION  AND  STATE  RELATIONS  IN  INDONESIA:  The relationship   between   religion  and  the  state   has  become  the actual  and dynamic discourse in every phase of the civilization development, both in the West and the East. The discourse mainly focuses on the form of the state  whether  integral,  symbiotic  or secular.  Departing  from the  discourse,  this  study  examines  the relationship  between religion (Islam) and the state  in Indonesia. The approach used is Martin Heidegger’s hermeneutics, while the assessment method used is the comparative method. The results of this study indicate that the Prophet, historically and normatively, had formulated  the Medina State  based on the Medina Charter which its spirit was  based on the Qur’an, not based on the Quran literally. By the same line, the Muslim scholars who became the founder of the Indonesian State had also formulated Pancasila- as it was set forth in the Preamble of the NKRI’s 1945 Constitution – as an ideal foundation in establishing the dynamic and dialectical relationship between religion and state in Indonesia. The substance of religious norms was applied after the promulgation  of, and in accordance  with,  Pancasila  and the  NKRI’s  1945 Constitution. The relationship between religion and the state, therefore, can be built based on the symbiotic or dynamic-dialectical typology.

Abstract

Education  is a tool  to  raise  the  degree  and  quality  of  the  nation. Good management is needed to keep educational process continuing. Conventional management is going to silence the world of education in responding to the challenges of time and modernity. In the meantime, Lampung community still has a strongly local culture and it has great potential  to become a major principle  for the implementation  of an ideal  education.  Management  education  based  on  local  culture  is, by  itself,  a  manifestation  of  democratic  education  and  community based (community-based  education). By using methods of descriptive and  phenomenological  approach,  it  is  understood  that  the  culture of Lampung-based management   of education is a necessity for management reform in education, particularly among the Lampongs. In addition, it also has a normative as well as the philosophical foundation rooted in the values of local traditions, as well as the demands of an increasingly democratic era and in the country with a democratic system.

Abstract

The nation’s  character  is built from the core ethical values derived from the values of religion, philosophy and culture of the State. The values derived from national cultures are in  great quantities and of highly diverse and contain  lofty  values of the country which enable this nation  a strong  social capital  possession  in building   superior civilization. In reality, however, such lofty values of national cultures, experiencing many challenges, due to the rush out of external values and step in the original values of our national cultures. Local wisdoms in many groups of / minority communities in Indonesia have been often overlooked,  whereas, these local wisdoms can actually be promoted to become a model for developing   the character education-based  on Indonesia’s character of origins. By the use of  cultural-anthropology approach,   this  paper   tries  to  uncover   local  wisdom   values   on indigenous  Bedouin  people  of Banten  as a defining characters,  i.e. environmental  care, love to work hard, obedient  to law /customary law, a simplicity /independent, democratic, hard-working and uphold honesty. These values, in line with author’s research findings actually to be internalized  and  preserved  among  indigenous  peoples,  to be taught, socialized, exemplified and enforced strictly by the rules, so as to form a strong character.

Abstract

The Muslim minorities in the West face various challenges originally come from within Muslim communities as well as Western’s negative attitudes upon them. Unfortunately, those challenges often lead Western Muslims to take two different attitudes with similar danger: preaching isolationist stance that considers everything seemed more or less characteristic  of the West in manners or style as dangerous and they contrives to forbid or avoid it as much as possible; or campaigning assimilation, in its literal sense—complete  adaptation to the Western way of life. This book deals with the challenges of Western Muslims and the theoretical-practical  efforts they must undertake  for their better future as well. Tariq Ramadan  calls all Western  Muslims  to reread their Islamic classical texts as well as ground them in Western socio- political context. In so doing, Tariq Ramadan contends that, through fresh interpretations of universal Islamic principles, the path towards an authentic integration is open for Western Muslims.

Abstract

ISLAM  : STATE,  POLITICS,  AND  DEMOCRACY.  Islam,  as a comprehensive religion, does not recognize the dichotomy between religion and the state, politics, and democracy. As a religion,  Islam possesses  universal  doctrines  on  the  matter  of state,  politics  and democracy  which  also  become  parts  of thead-din  al-Islami.  As  part of  the  phenomenon  of  civilization, culture and Islamic values are developed to be in tune with the social institutions affected by the situation  and the dynamics of space and time. histrorical  and socio-cultural  factors and socio- Muslims also have an effect on the analysis and understanding of the universal teachings. The emergence of differences in analysis of a variety of state and political issues is caused by such different interpretations (polyinterpretable) which, finally, influences the formulation  of political  thoughts  and practices  in contemporary Muslim countries. This article tries to open up minds that Islam is not merely a ritual religion which contains  a set of doctrines, but it also possesses a holistic, universal, and systematic   views toward worldly life.

Abstract

Islam is a universal religion. The basic value of Islam implies a dialectical  relationship  of Islam and local culture.  Various study on Islam and local culture view traditional Islam, which is represented by the NU, as a single entity. The traditional Islam opposed to official Islam, and on the other hand it is confronted with  syncretic  Islam.  In Madura,  NU is not  a single entity. There are variation in it,  namely  a community  of traditional- acculturative Islam led by kyais and a community of traditional- syncretic Islam led by adat leaders. The latter community practices a ritual which is the ancestral tradition,  namely  the ritual of beberten. This ritual, according to the kyais, is seen as a syncretic ritual. Therefore, kyais penetrate to the adat community through bahs al-masa’il ad-diniyah and socialize it. Responding to  such penetration,  the  adat  community,  culturally,  applies resistance and adaptation  strategies.  Resistance is applied by revitalizing ritual of beberten, while adaptation  is applied by negating certain ritual elements, changing the meaning of ritual, and adding certain rituals.
