Abstract

THE FUTURE OF THE PESANTREN (BOARDING SCHOOLS) FOLLOWINGTHEENACTMENTOFNATIONALEDUCATION ACT   NO.   20/2003  AND   GOVERNMENT    REGULATION NO. 55/2007  ON RELIGIOUS EDUCATION.  The reformation movement   in   Indonesia,   including  in   education   sphere,   is reinforced   by  the   principles   of  democracy,  decentralization, justice,  and  human  rights.  In  the  national  education system, the  reform  is done  to  eliminate  discrimination, both  in public and private  educational  institutions,   as well as to  abolish  the dichotomy between religious education and general education. As the consequences of the enactment of National Education Act No. 20 / 2003, the elimination of discrimination  becomes a necessity. Given that one of the principles of educational democracy requires the involvement of all elements in policy making, the pesantren, as one element  of National Education  System,  is entitled  to be involved. This involvement will not only to absorb the aspirations of the boarding school, but also to encourage the growth of cooperation between the government and the pesantrencircles  in realizing the more qualified and dignified education.

First, in the writing  of character’s biography about his life has an impact on a critical attitude  gap between academic interests of biographer and psychological pressure from mainstream figures who has written. Second, there is a plurality  of the  biographer  rated  from reporter,  historians, scholars and experts from various professions with their own characteristics of literacy. Third, a biography written by historian is  more  scientific  which  shows  the  portion  of  the  balance  in the  selection  of figures,  while the  non- historian  biographer  is more interested  in contemporary  issues and prefer well-known figures. Abstract

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN PROMOTING THE PEACE AMONG PLURAL SOCIETIES: Political and ideological tensions often led to hatred speeches and messages of intolerance against ethnic other  groups, cultures, and religions. Religious Education can play a role in promoting a positive view of diversity.  This study provides a review of the curriculum of Islamic studies (PAI) that  exist in four junior high schools in Solo, as well as the perceptions of teachers and students about religious diversity. This study adopted a qualitative approach, using content analysis of written documents such as student’s manuals and teacher handbooks), combined with a semi- structured  questionnaire for principals, teachers, and students, and Focused Group Discussion to assess their perceptions and attitudes  towards  diversity  and difference.  This  study  found that the curriculum of PAI lacked content aimed at instilling co- existence and peace education. Also, about a third of teachers and students  reported intolerance towards different religions. The result is then followed by a pilot project to  develop an Islamic-based  Peace Education, which aims to build a peace- loving character among young people, through teaching mutual respect, non-violence, social justice and co-existence, using the values of Islam.

Abstract

Religious  affiliation  and cultural diversity has become potential sources of social conflicts in Indonesia.  As almost every existing religion has a truth  claim, all of it’s  believers   fell   obliged to proclaim   religious  teachings  and values in social and national life. Viewed in this  context  , the biggest  problem in Indonesia today is “ how  theology of existing religions define themselves among   other  religions . This article  is aimed at exploring   the concept of “Tasamuh / the principle of tolerance”   as one of  the theological  basis  of the  religious  consciousness    in Islam. The concept  of tolerance  in Islam  is so simple  and rational.  Islam requires its followers to establish  strict  limits in the context  of faith,  while maintaining  respect  for other’s  rights,  individually, socially and religiously.   Such an obligation  is made to keep its followers not to get stuck on syncretism.
