Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out kinds of text contained in the reading passage found in English textbook entitled English Alive for Senior High School Grade X published by Yudhistira and  the readibility level of reading text material in English textbook entitled English Alive for Senior High School Grade X published by Yudhistira.This study is a descriptive qualitative study which used content analysis as the method of the study. The method is used to describe the content of the textbook. One of the purposes of this method is to identify bias, prejudice, or propaganda in textbook presentation. The object of this study is English textbook entitled English Alive for Senior High School Grade X first and second semester published by Yudisthira. The textbook consists of ten Chapters with illustrations. The book composed based on KTSP curriculum. The data were collected by using document analysis. In calculating readibility level, the researcher employed the Flesch readability formula.Research findings reveals that from the result of analysis there are five kinds of text, namely recount, narrative, procedure, descriptive and news items texts. Based on the result of calculating the readibility level only five texts from sixteen texts are relevant to the students of Senior High School.

Abstract

This research is aimed at searching for the religious values on Habburrahman El Shirazy’s novel entitled Ketika Cinta Bertasbih by applying Genetic Structuralism using descriptive method and content analysis technique. The approaches used in this research were the sociology of literature and religiousness of literature. The religious values existing on this novel included as one of missionary endeavor forms, which gave valuable learning and enrich moral value. By means of his work of art, novel in this case, the author tried to present the sociological condition within his society. He also tried to deliver a missionary endeavor by using familiar language expressions, it was because the language of the novel was easily understood by the readers and the theme of the novel was closely related to the society condition. Sociological approach depicted that Ketika Cinta Bertasbih really influenced social values existed within the society, and the reverse. An author’s background absolutely gave great influence a novel, so did on this novel. Therefore, the social life of Habiburrahman El Shirazy had close relationship with his novel, Ketika Cinta Bertasbih.

Abstract

In achieving learning objectives, it needs a test to measure students’ achievement. A test should be constructed based on the learning objectives so it measures what it really intends to measure. It also should be assured that it fulfills the criteria of good test, one of which is item validity. Item validity concerns on how each item measures what has been established in blueprint. However, analyzing item validity is insufficient since it is only a part of item analysis. Therefore, the urge to analyze item quality is imperative. Further, the posttest instrument used in measuring students’ achievement after following matriculation program in IAIN Raden Intan Lampung has not been analyzed yet since the matriculation program operated. In this case, the quality of test items is crucial to be analyzed. In analyzing quality of test items, ANATES was employed to investigate item discrimination, item difficulty, and item validity for practicality and efficiency. The result demonstrated that posttest instrument needed to be revised in terms of item difficulty and effectiveness of distractors.

Abstract

In doing the process of translating, translator does several steps in delivering the meaning of the source text into target text. The goal of process of translating is to find equivalent term of source text in the target text. There is no exact linguistic system between two languages. Because of this difference, equivalence is quite hard to be achieved in the target language. As the consequence, sometimes, there is a shift in the target text. The This research is analyzing the noun phrases in term of what kind of category shift done by the translator in translating the noun phrases?

Abstract

Multiple Intelligence was proposed by Howard Gardner in 1983 as a model of intelligences that classify intelligences into various specific (primarily sensory) modalities, rather than seeing it as dominated by a single general ability. He has questioned the idea that intelligence is a single entity, that it results from a single factor, and that it can be measured simply via IQ tests.In this study, the writer tried to explain the history of multiple intelligence, the definition and types of multiple intelligences, and also the future possible implication of Multiple Intelligence in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research entitled "Indirect Refusal Strategies in The Film "The Blind Side" is a study of indirect refusal in one of drama films. In this research, the researcher chose indirect refusal in her studies due to knowing how people make indirect refusal and the strategies that they use in order to avoid the conflict and not to hurt someone else feeling.The research aims to find out the indirect refusal in the dialogues, in order to understand the better way of people convey their strategy to refuse something with indirect refusal strategies. The second goal is the researcher wants to know about the types of indirect refusal strategies that are used by the main characters in the conversation. In collecting the data, the researcher used two stages in her instrument; the first stage is note taking and the second stage is checking list.            In doing the analysis, the researcher found the answers of these research problems about indirect refusal strategies and the type of indirect refusal strategies in the film “The Blind Side.  The researcher found there are 12 conversations using indirect refusal strategies in the film “The Blind Side”. The researcher also found there are three types of indirect refusal strategies which used in the film “The Blind Side”. The indirect refusal strategies that used in the film “The Blind Side” are the expression of a positive opinion, the expression of regret and the expression of reason.

Abstract

This research entitled “Analisis Morfosintaktis Konstruksi Berprefiks Negatif Bahasa Inggris” has two main objectives, i.e. (i) formulating and analyzing types of derivational construction of English negative prefixes; and (ii) formulating and analyzing the constructions of English negative prefixes based on morphosyntactic analysis. This is a kind of descriptive-qualitative research which employs a distributional method in data analysis with the underlying theories of morphology, syntax. The data are sentences containing the construction of English negative prefixes, taken from English novels and textbooks. The result of the research shows that the class and meaning changing derivation includes (1) deverbal noun: un- + V; (2) deadjectival noun: un- + Adj; (3) denominal verb: dis + N; (4) deadjectival verb: dis- + Adj; (5) denominal adjective: non- + Adj, and  class maintaining derivation includes (6) nominal: anti- + N; (7) verbal: un- + V; (8) adjectival: dis- + Adj; and     (9) adverbial: im- + Adv. Morphologically, the constructions consist of  (a) two constituents, (b) three constituents, and (c) four constituents. Syntactically,  the constructions cover head-modifier in NP, VP; head in AdjP; directive and coordinative in exocentric phrase.

Abstract

The role of L1 in instructed English learning has been the subject of much controversy. Some teachers have the opinion that L1 may be used under certain limitations and others feel that it should not be allowed at all. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the use L1 in promoting English learning by observing and interviewing five kindergarten teachers in Bandar Lampung. The result showed that L1 has a valuable role to play in the English classroom. Teaching English for young learners requires teachers to teach efficiently and appropriately. It indicates that the L1 gains more benefits by incorporating the students’ L1 as a learning tool and a facilitator for an efficient teaching. L1 is most useful at beginning and low levels (in this case for kindergarten students).

Abstract

This study investigates students' ability in writing narrative text, especially in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language-used, and mechanic. The research was conducted at SMA N 9 Bandar Lampung. The sample was chosen by using systematic probability sampling. The study employed control group pretest posttest design. To collect the data, the writing test applied that was administered both in pretest and posttest. T-test was conducted to examine the difference between writing ability of both groups on writing test.  The mean score of the pretest for experimental class was 69.83 and for the control class was 68.55. Its two tailed significance showed that p>0.05 (p=.73), it indicates that the  writing ability of both classes was homogenous. At the end of the research, after fifteen meetings, the mean score of the posttest for experimental class was 75.05 and the control class was 65.61. Therefore, it is concluded that the students’ English Short Story Reading Habit has positive effect on students’ ability in writing narrative text. The findings also suggest that the English Short Story Reading Habit activities can be promoted as one of ways to fulfill the demands of 2006 curriculum in developing students’ ability in writing narrative text, the teacher just asks the students to have real experience by motivating them to read many kinds of English Short Stories in order to make them be able to gather their ideas in writing narrative text. Further research is required to replicate these findings.

Abstract

NUNUN INDRASARI , 2012. The Effectiveness of Using Fix Up Strategy to Teach Reading Viewed from Students’ Self-confidence (An Experimental Research at the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 Temanggung in the Academic Year of 2011/2012). Thesis. Surakarta. English Education Department of Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University. 2012.The objectives of this study are: (1) to reveal whether Fix-Up Strategy is more effective than Direct Teaching to teach reading; (2) to reveal whether students having high self-confidence have better reading skill than those having low self-confidence; and (3) to reveal whether there is an interaction effect between teaching strategies and the students’ self-confidence on the students’ reading skill.The experimental research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Temanggung, from March to April 2012. The sample of the research was two classes; those were VIIID which was treated as experimental class taught by using fix up strategy and VIIIG which was treated as control class taught using by direct teaching. Each of them consisted of 26 students. The data were in the form of quantitative data that were taken from reading test and self-confidence questionaire. The data of reading test were used to know the students’ reading skill. The data of self-confidence questionaire were used to know the students’ level of self-confidence. The data of reading test were the scores of students’ reading test that was administered after having eight times treatment for each class. The researcher analyzed the data using ANOVA or analysis of variance.Based on the result of data analysis, the research findings are: (1) Fix up strategy is more effective than direct teaching to teach reading; (2) the achievement of students’ skill in reading does not depend on the level of the students’ self-confidence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ self-confidence. Based on these research findings, it can be concluded that fix up strategy is an effective way to teach reading for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Temanggung. From that result, fix up strategy can be implemented at class in order to achieve optimal result. By applying this, the teacher has to facilitate the students to think creatively and actively in reading text by giving fix- up tools, such as previewing, predicting, rereading, monitoring, making connection, visualizing, making inference, and retelling the text.
