Abstract

In line with the competency-based curriculum at the University of Riau, efforts to improve learning in the Basic Concepts of Science 2 course emphasize students’ conceptual understanding of matter through learning activities grounded in scientific inquiry. This study employed classroom action research conducted in two cycles involving 55 third-semester students of the PGSD JIP Program at the University of Riau during the odd semester of the 2013/2014 academic year. The findings indicate that the implementation of the inquiry learning model improved both student activity and learning outcomes. In the first cycle, most learning activities were categorized as good, although activities I and II remained in the fair category. In the second cycle, students’ activity reached the good category in the first and fourth activities and the very good category in the second, third, fifth, and sixth activities. Students’ learning outcomes also showed improvement, with the average score increasing from 65.45 in the pre-test to 77.00 in Daily Test I and 77.45 in Daily Test II. The improvement from the initial data to the first cycle was 11.55 points, while the increase from the initial data to the second cycle reached 12 points. Overall, the enhancement of students’ learning outcomes was achieved because inquiry-based learning encourages active, student-centered learning by presenting problems, engaging students in simple experiments using appropriate tools and materials, analyzing data, preparing reports, and communicating observational results based on scientific concepts and principles learned.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low social studies (IPS) learning outcomes of second-grade students at SD Negeri 010 Banjar Panjang, Kerumutan District. Of the 20 students, only 10 students (50.00%) achieved the minimum mastery criterion (KKM). The purpose of this study was to improve IPS learning outcomes through the implementation of the training method. This research was a classroom action research conducted in two cycles. The data focused on improving learning mastery and students’ IPS learning outcomes. The results showed that after the implementation of the training method, learning outcomes and student mastery increased. Based on the preliminary data, 10 students (50%) achieved mastery, which increased to 14 students (70%) in the first cycle and further increased to 16 students (80%) in the second cycle. In addition, students’ IPS learning outcomes also improved, with the average score increasing from 55 in the preliminary data to 60 in the first cycle and to 64 in the second cycle.

Abstract

This study employed a quasi-experimental method using a randomized pretest–posttest control group design. The research subjects were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The results revealed significant differences between classes implementing inquiry-based learning and those using conventional learning. The mean N-Gain score of students’ science process skills was highest in Primary School A, reaching 0.29, while the lowest N-Gain score was found in Primary School C at 0.15. Regarding the indicators of science process skills, the highest improvement in the experimental class was observed in the hypothesis-formulation aspect, whereas the lowest improvement occurred in the questioning aspect. In the control class, the highest indicator was also found in the hypothesis aspect, while the lowest was in the observation aspect. Overall, the science process skills of students in the experimental class demonstrated higher N-Gain values than those in the control class. These findings indicate that inquiry-based learning significantly improves students’ science process skills compared to conventional learning methods.

Abstract

The research aimed to examine the effect of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model on improving students’ retention in science learning. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a learning concept that helps teachers connect learning materials with real-life situations, enabling students to relate knowledge to their everyday experiences. The CTL model emphasizes the presentation of real and meaningful contexts in the classroom. Retention refers to students’ ability to store and recall information after the learning process has taken place. This research employed a one-group pretest–posttest design to analyze the data. A retention test (retest) was administered twelve weeks after the posttest to measure students’ retention. The results showed that the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model had a significant effect on students’ retention in science learning among fifth-grade students at SDN 130 Pekanbaru City. The mean score of students’ retention in this study reached 130%, which was categorized as “very good.” Furthermore, the findings indicate that the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model dominantly influences students’ memory and retention in science learning.
