Abstract

Literary text-based learning is interesting because literature learning in schools is often neglected. Literature learning often focuses on knowledge-based learning. The changing curriculum does not guarantee a change in the learning system in elementary school classrooms. Therefore, this study aims to describe the process of teaching and learning text-based literature at the elementary school level and its impact on students’ writing skills. Qualitative and quantitative descriptive methods were used. A qualitative method was used to describe the teaching and learning process in the classroom, while a quantitative method was used to assess learning outcomes. Techniques used were observation, interviews, and narrative writing tests, with the research object being three school teachers and 60 students from 3 schools in Samosir Regency. The results showed that the Seventh-Grade secondary school teachers in Samosir Regency do not yet understand text-based literature learning techniques fully, so teachers still use conventional methods. The results of teaching and learning activities on students’ ability to write narratives showed an average score of 73.27. This value has reached the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) but has not yet been maximized because there are still obstacles.

Abstract

Background: Understanding speech acts in animation is important because misunderstandings can affect communication across cultures. The Masameer County animation, popular among Arabic speakers, contains dialogues with cultural meanings that need deeper study.Aims: This research aims to analyse the categories and functions of illocutionary speech acts in Masameer County's animated dialogue. Methods: This research uses qualitative content analysis with some quantitative support, focusing on pragmatics. The Arabic dialogues and their Indonesian subtitles are transcribed and analysed to identify illocutionary speech acts. John Searle's theory is applied to examine the categories and functions of these speech acts in the Masameer County episodes "Ice Cream" and "Washingtonia".Results: Out of 443 utterances, 269 were identified as illocutionary speech acts. Representatives predominated with 153 data, such as claiming and describing, followed by directives with 94 data, including commanding and requesting. Commissive (14 data) and expressive (8 data) appeared less frequently, with promising and regretting being the most common within these categories. Declarative speech acts were not found, indicating the narrative's focus on personal interaction.Implications: The dominance of representatives and directive speech acts suggests that the communication style in Masameer County primarily revolves around the core functions of human interaction. This finding affirms the universal relevance of Searle's theory of illocutionary speech acts in analysing animated media.

Abstract

Background: Hate speech targeting religious symbols in digital media has sparked complex legal and social debates. Public figures often disseminate ideological views that may violate religious norms and legal provisions. Aims: This study aims to identify the linguistic forms and pragmatic functions of directive and representative speech acts in Pandji Gumilang’s statements on the Zaytun Official YouTube channel, which were used as evidence in a finalised criminal case. Methods: A descriptive qualitative method was employed using a forensic pragmatic framework based on Searle's speech act theory. Data were drawn from the Indramayu District Court Verdict No. 365/Pid.Sus/2023/PN.Idm using purposive sampling. The analysis focused on speech forms, communicative functions, and violations of Leech's politeness maxims, specifically tact, agreement, modesty, and approbation. Results: The study found 12 speeches containing hate speech against religious symbols, consisting of four directive speeches and eight representative speeches. All data violates the principles of politeness, especially the maxims of wisdom, agreement, humility, and decency. Statements such as "Indonesia is a sacred land", "not the kalam of Allah", and "strange nasab descendants of the Prophet Saw. show the manipulation of language that functions as an ideological means and has a legal impact. Implications: Findings reveal that directive and representative speech acts serve as ideological tools undermining Islamic symbols and provoking legal action. This research highlights the utility of forensic pragmatics in examining how language functions as symbolic power and a medium for religion-based offences.

Abstract

Background: Language plays a vital role in human interaction and has evolved beyond direct communication to convey messages through public spaces, known as the Linguistic Landscape (LL). The presence of LL varies across regions, from being highly visible to nearly absent. Aims: This study aims to analyse the conceptual and functional aspects of public space naming in Shah Alam, Selangor, using a linguistic landscape approach to understand how language shapes identity and social function in urban settings, employing a landscape linguistics perspective. Methods: This study used a qualitative descriptive method, where researchers directly describe the concept of naming in public space in Shah Alam city, Selangor, Malaysia, using the theoretical framework of Linguistic Landscape. The data were collected through direct field observation without involving interviews or informants. The analysis process involved data reduction, categorisation, contextual interpretation, and inductive drawing of conclusions. Visual triangulation and comparative site observation were employed to enhance the validity of the data. Results: The findings in this research reveal that the naming of public spaces can be classified based on informational functions. Symbolically, street naming reflects dynamics of power, cultural relationships, and language policy; office signage indicates aspects of language policy and status, while public signs expose elements of linguistic imperialism. The collected data include diverse types of linguistic signage: three instances of street naming, one city motto, two public information boards, two examples of office naming, two prohibition signs in public transport, and two signs designated for specific user groups. Implications: The implications of this research are twofold. Theoretically, these findings enrich the study of Linguistic Landscape. Practically, they offer insights into language planning and naming policies in multilingual public spaces.

Abstract

Background: The short story Ḥabbat al-Tūt by Kamil Kailani narrates a mother’s sacrifice to save her child without expecting anything in return. Its theme remains highly relevant to contemporary society, where social relationships are often shaped by interests rather than sincerity. Aims: The present study seeks to examine how narrative elements contribute to the construction of the plot, the development of characters, and the articulation of the underlying message intended by the author. Methods: This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The primary data consisted of Kamil Kailani's Arabic short story Ḥabbat al-Tūt, while the secondary sources comprised scholarly books, journal articles, proceedings, and web-based references related to Vladimir Propp's structuralist framework and short story analysis. Data were analysed through a narrative structural approach, which involved systematic procedures of close reading, classification of narrative functions, reconstruction of the story's structure, and interpretation of its thematic and moral dimensions. Results: The study identified 19 relevant functions within the narrative of Ḥabbat al-Tūt, each presenting variations in the way the main character gradually overcomes challenges. One such function is interdiction, which reflects the rules or restrictions that characters are required to follow. In the story, for instance, Kuku is instructed to eat only small seeds, as his body is not yet strong enough. Implications: The short story highlights the sincerity of a mother's love, offering values of love, responsibility, and sacrifice that remain meaningful for readers. By applying Propp's 19 narrative functions, this study demonstrates the relevance of structuralist analysis to modern Arabic literature. It shows how narrative form conveys emotional and moral significance within the Middle Eastern cultural context.

Abstract

Background: In today’s era, where critical thinking and problem-solving are vital competencies, the integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) into educational resources, particularly textbooks, has become an important benchmark for quality learning. Aims: This study aims to identify HOTS exercises in Arabic textbooks of Madrasah Aliyah class X published by Quadra in 2022 in terms of Bloom's revised taxonomy theory at the cognitive level of C4, or Analysing, C5, Evaluating, and C6 Creating. Methods: This research employs document analysis techniques (content analysis) within a qualitative descriptive approach to examine the object in depth using primary data. The researcher directly observed the book's content and analysed the HOTS elements in the exercise questions. These were then categorised according to the levels of the revised Bloom's Taxonomy, and conclusions were drawn based on the classifications. Results: The results reveal that although HOTS elements are present in each theme, they are relatively few. The distribution shows C4 (2.4%), C5 (5.2%), and C6 (9.1%), indicating a predominance of LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) over HOTS. Implications: The findings imply the need for improvement and development of question exercises in Arabic textbooks to include aspects of higher order thinking skills (HOTS), especially at the C4 (analyze), C5 (evaluate), and C6 (create) levels, in order to support more critical, analytical, and creative learning in accordance with the demands of the 21st century curriculum.

Abstract

Background: Non-formal English education programs often lack rigorous assessment tools, resulting in challenges in evaluating student performance and guiding instructional improvements. One such program, the English Massive Program (EMAS) in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia, serves as a community-driven initiative focused on enhancing English proficiency. However, the quality of its assessments, especially in reading comprehension, remains a critical concern. Aims: This study aims to investigate how item analysis using the QUEST application can enhance the quality of diagnostic assessment and instructional strategies in non-formal English education, specifically within the EMAS program. The focus is on analysing reading comprehension tests to identify weaknesses and propose improvements in test construction. Methods: This exploratory study analysed 30 multiple-choice reading comprehension items completed by 26 junior high school students participating in the EMAS program. The QUEST application was employed to assess item difficulty, discrimination, and distractor efficiency. Results: The results showed that while most discrimination indices were within acceptable ranges, many items, especially the distractors, were too simple and ineffective. This resulted in insufficient and unbalanced discrimination values, indicating that the test items did not optimally differentiate among varying student ability levels. Implications: The study underscores the importance of integrating psychometric-based diagnostic tools in community education settings. It demonstrates how such analysis can empower educators with practical insights to improve test design, thereby enhancing assessment quality and pedagogy. The research calls for more advanced diagnostic assessment methods to support literacy and instructional planning in low-resource, non-formal educational environments.

Abstract

Background: In Japanese higher education, the integration of English through English-Medium Instruction (EMI) poses both opportunities and challenges for international students, particularly those from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Aims: This study explores the experiences of Indonesian students in using English for academic purposes in Japanese universities, focusing on their views, challenges, and adaptation strategies. Methods: Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five Indonesian postgraduate students studying across diverse academic backgrounds in various universities in Japan. Document analysis was also conducted to support the interview data. Results: This study revealed that English is essential for accessing academic resources and engaging in international interactions. However, students still face challenges in pronunciation, academic writing, vocabulary, presentation norms, and expressing ideas confidently and clearly. They use various strategies such as self-directed learning, digital tools, peer interaction, and institutional support to adapt. Implications: The study highlights the need for more inclusive EMI policies and better language support services in Japanese universities. It also emphasises that language learning in EMI contexts is socially, culturally, and emotionally complex, requiring internal motivation, social interaction, and institutional responsiveness.
