Abstract

Background: Arabic vocabulary instruction in Islamic elementary schools (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah) is often hindered by low student motivation and a reliance on rote memorization, which is particularly ineffective for concrete themes like diseases (al-amrāḍ). This highlights a critical need for developmentally appropriate visual media. Aims: This research aims to: (1) design thematic flashcard media on al-amrāḍ for third-grade students, (2) evaluate the media's validity through expert judgment, and (3) assess its practicality and impact on student engagement. Methods: Employing a Research and Development (R&D) framework, this study utilized the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). The process began with a needs analysis through observation and interviews, followed by the design and validation of flashcards by experts in Arabic language education, media, and linguistics. A limited trial with 22 third-grade students at MI Miftahul Akhlaqiyah, Semarang, was conducted to evaluate practicality and student perceptions through observation and response questionnaires. Results: The flashcards achieved high validity scores from experts: 88% (content), 83% (linguistics), and 75% (media). Student responses were exceptionally positive, with an overall practicality rating of 95%, particularly appreciating the visual appeal, ease of use, and increased motivation. The findings indicate that the flashcards effectively facilitate vocabulary acquisition by creating clear visual-lexical connections. Implications: The al-amrāḍ flashcards are a valid and practical learning medium that effectively addresses pedagogical gaps in elementary Arabic instruction. This research underscores the importance of integrating visual design with linguistic accuracy for young learners. Practically, the flashcards offer an engaging, interactive alternative to traditional methods. Theoretically, it contributes to the discourse on multimedia design for early language acquisition within religious education contexts.

Abstract

Background: Arabic listening lessons often rely on passive audio repetition, leaving students with little opportunity to check their understanding or receive immediate feedback. This condition slows their progress, especially in recognizing key phonemes and responding accurately. Aims: This study aims to develop and validate a web-based interactive listening tool using text-to-speech (TTS) and speech-recognition (ASR) to support students’ Arabic listening proficiency. Methods: The research followed the Dick, Carey & Carey model through the stages of analysis, design, development, and expert validation. Data were collected through needs analysis, classroom observations, and interviews with teachers to identify learners’ challenges in Arabic listening. After the prototype was created, expert judgment sheets were used to gather validation data from design and content specialists. The responses were then analyzed using percentage-based validity scoring to determine the feasibility of the media. The prototype integrated web-based TTS and ASR modules, specifying platform architecture, speech engines, supported languages, and technical parameters to ensure replicability. Results: The results show that the media supports active listening practice and helps address common learner difficulties, particularly in phoneme recognition and comprehension. TTS provided clear and natural audio, while ASR offered direct corrective feedback. Expert assessments indicated high feasibility, with a design validity score of 92% and content validity of 87%. Implications: The findings indicate that TTS–ASR integration can ease teachers’ correction workload and help students practice more independently, offering practical potential for broader classroom use.

Abstract

Background: The preservation of local literature rooted in oral traditions faces new challenges and opportunities in the digital era. Digital technologies enable documentation and wider dissemination, yet they also raise concerns about cultural authenticity, community sovereignty, and sustainability. A systematic synthesis is required to clarify current scholarly directions. Aims: This study aims to: (1) identify dominant themes and research approaches in recent studies on the digital preservation of local literatures; (2) examine how scholars conceptualize the shift from oral to digital forms; and (3) analyze the documented educational impact of digitization within indigenous and local communities. Methods: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches across Scopus, Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, and ProQuest covered English and Indonesian publications from 2010–2025. Studies focused on preserving local literary content were included, while purely technical works were excluded. Data were synthesized through thematic analysis. Results: Six thematic clusters emerged: Digital Tools and Innovation; Community Participation and Co-Creation; Ethical Access and Cultural Protocols; Multimedia Storytelling; Digital Knowledge Management; and Collaborative Institutional Models. Scholars largely frame digital transition as cultural continuity and narrative hybridity shaped by technology but grounded in community stewardship and digital sovereignty. Educationally, digitization enhances reading comprehension, writing skills, engagement, accessibility, and cultural relevance. Implications: Effective preservation requires culturally grounded, participatory, and multidisciplinary approaches. Policymakers and practitioners should strengthen community-led digital stewardship, establish ethical access guidelines, and integrate digitized local literatures into curricula for sustainable cultural continuity.

Abstract

Background: The quality of assessment instruments is essential to ensure that students’ learning outcomes are measured accurately. In Arabic language learning, Final Semester Assessments (PAS) must be supported by sound psychometric qualities to function as valid and reliable evaluation tools. Aims: This study aims to examine the quality profile of Arabic PAS items at MAN 1 Gresik by analysing their psychometric characteristics and identifying items that are feasible, need revision, or are not feasible for use. Methods: This research employed a quantitative descriptive design using psychometric item analysis. The data consisted of 40 multiple-choice PAS items and students’ response sheets. The analysis integrated content and construct validity with empirical indicators, including point-biserial validity, KR-20 reliability, item difficulty, and item discrimination, using Microsoft Excel and ANATES V4. Results: The results show that content validity reached 92.5%, construct validity reached 82.85%, and empirical validity was moderate (r = 0.60). The overall test reliability was high (r₁₁ = 0.75). Item difficulty is dominated by medium-level items, while item discrimination is the weakest aspect. Based on integrated psychometric criteria, 40% of items are feasible, 57,5% require revision, and 2,5% are non feasible. The causes of the failure of the test items, content validity (7.5%), construct validity (42.5%), empirical validity (2.5%), level of difficulty (12.5%), and discrimination index (22.5%). Implications: These findings highlight the importance of systematic psychometric evaluation in Arabic language assessment. Improvements are needed in construct validity, especially Arabic language accuracy, distractor effectiveness, and item discrimination. Such an approach supports the improvement of school-based Arabic assessments to ensure more valid and reliable measurement of students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel's military attacks on Palestine have become increasingly brutal, sparking massive protests by students at Western universities.  Al Jazeera plays a significant role in shaping public perception of this discourse. In its reporting, Al Jazeera frequently uses metaphors. The fire metaphor is among the most effective and is often used in various contexts. Aims: This research aims to examine the conceptual metaphor of fire in Al Jazeera Arabic's discourse on pro-Palestinian student protests at western universities and reveal its ideological functions. Methods: This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with analysis grounded in conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003). The data source was pro-Palestinian student protest discourse on Al Jazeera Arabic. Data analysis uses the metaphor identification procedure (MIP) by the Pragglejaz Group. Results: These findings reveal that Al Jazeera Arabic uses lexemes related to fire to conceptualize and frame pro-Palestinian student protests at Western universities. Among the thirteen lexemes found, ʔimtadda ‘spread’ (19 data), ʔintašara 'spread' (12 data), and šarārah 'spark' (12 data) appear most frequently to highlight the rapid escalation of the protest movement and its massive impact. The metaphorical mapping of all the lexemes found constructs the conceptual metaphor PROTEST IS FIRE, highlighting student action as a significant and impactful force like fire. Implications: The significance of this research lies in its contribution to expanding the understanding of how the fire metaphors is not only a linguistic feature but also a cognitive and ideological device for shaping public perceptions of pro-Palestinian protests.
