Abstract

The textual equivalence between the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) is greatly influenced by cohesive device translation. This article aims to analyze textual equivalence in translating personal references from Arabic to Indonesian. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using Halliday and Hasan's (1976) theory of cohesion and Baker's (2018) theory of cohesiveness in textual equivalence. The data came from the narrative discourse of the saga genre of the book 'Wali Tanah Jawa' in the form of the Arabic text "Ahla Al-Musamarah fi Hikayati Al-Auliya' Al-'Asyrah" by Sheikh Abul Fadhol Senori (1961) and the translation by M. Solahudin (2020). The results of the analysis showed that there were three findings in the translation of cohesive personal reference devices from Arabic into Indonesian, namely variations in the form of alignment of personal reference translators, differences in the frequency of appearance of personal references in equivalent language units, and the interrelationship of social and cultural relationship factors in the translation of personal references.

Abstract

The form of tests or evaluations applied by teachers or educators in various educational institutions until now is still considered less interesting and tends to be monotonous so there is no intense interaction between educators and students in the evaluation process carried out. Often, students feel bored with ordinary tests or text forms that are rigid and monotonous, so there needs to be an update in the model or form of tests that are interactive, innovative, fun, and not boring for students. The purpose of this study is to find out various kinds of interactive Arabic test or quiz models that can be used in learning Arabic so that learning becomes more interesting and fun. This study uses literature research with a qualitative descriptive approach. Secondary data is used as a data source, with data collection techniques in the form of documentation. The result of this research is that there are various forms or models of interactive tests that can be utilized by teachers or Arabic instructors, either by developing their own using several computer-based applications or by utilizing website-based test or quiz applications that already exist on the Internet, where some of these applications can be accessed for free. These findings contribute to the current discussion about appropriate language assessment approaches.

Abstract

The selection of appropriate teaching methods by educators and the optimization of learning media utilization are crucial factors in achieving success and effectiveness in the learning process. Accordingly, this research aims to examine the impact of using the Teams Games Tournament method with crossword puzzle media on the learning outcomes of Balaghah (Arabic rhetoric) students at the State Islamic University Imam Bonjol Padang. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Data collection techniques involved administering pretests and posttests to both the control and experimental groups. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests, tests for normality and homogeneity (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test), and independent sample t-tests. The research results indicated a significant variation in student learning outcomes before and after using the Teams Games Tournament method with crossword puzzle media in Balaghah learning. Based on the findings, the average pretest scores for the experimental group and control group were 52.83 and 52.23, respectively, while the average posttest scores for the experimental group were 92.87 and 81.46 for the control group. The independent sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating sufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Therefore, it was concluded that there was a significant difference in student learning outcomes before and after implementing the Teams Games Tournament method with crossword puzzle media in Balaghah learning. These findings validated the effectiveness of this method in enhancing understanding and student learning outcomes in Balaghah material.

Abstract

The role of the media in the 2024 election became a polemic in the community. One of the causes was the differing news of the election in the mass media based on the ideologies adopted by the media. This condition also tended for similar patterns to occur in the elections that would be held in 2024. Various surveys have emerged regarding strong candidates for the position of President of the Republic of Indonesia. This study used a critical discourse analysis research method to uncover the ideological discourse of the 2024 Election Vortex. The research data were digital news that contained a digital media ideological discourse related to the 2024 Election Vortex. The data were sourced from three digital news media with the highest trust index in Indonesia, according to the research results by the Reuters Institute Digital News Report (2023:132). These media were Kompas.com (69%), CNN.com (68%), and liputan6.com (64%). The concept of Critical Discourse applied in this study was Theo van Leeuwen's framework for analyzing actors and social actions. The results showed that the three digital dailies with the highest level of trust in Indonesia, kompas.com, cnnindonesia.com, and liputan6.com, exhibited mixed views on the four main issues in their reporting. These differences reflected different ideologies.

Abstract

Research focusing on incorporating religious values into language learning has recently grown, as reflected in the increasing number of related studies. As the world's largest Muslim-majority country, Indonesia has a crucial role in integrating Islamic values into education, particularly in the context of teaching English as a foreign language. This research aimed to develop an English module that contains Islamic values in narrative text material for students at MTs that is valid, practical, and effective. The Islamic values that have been integrated are prophetic stories and Islamic history which are very closely related to the environment of the Islamic boarding school for students at MTs Assalam and MTs Darul Istiqomah Manado. This research is a development research using the ADDIE model which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of this research were 2 English teachers and 35 class IX students at MTs Assalam and Darul Istiqomah. Data collection techniques used included interviews, observation, and questionnaires. The material and media design experts have validated the module development with an average result of 90.5%, which means it is very valid. Furthermore, validation of users obtained data of 84.16% (very practical) from student users and 91% (very practical) from English teacher users. Therefore, it concluded that the English module containing Islamic values in Narrative text material meets practical criteria and can help teachers and students achieve learning goals.

Abstract

Differences in writing abilities between students encourage teachers to design or have special assessment tools to evaluate the development of their abilities. Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School applies portfolio assessment as an assessment instrument in the Tahsin kitabah subject. So, this research aims to determine the form of portfolio assessment used in Tahsin kitabah lessons, the steps for portfolio assessment, and their impact on tahsin kitabah learning at the Al-Hidayah Karangploso cottage. This research is qualitative descriptive research, where the data collection process is done through interviews and documentation. The data analysis goes through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the form of portfolio assessment used in the Tahsin kitabah subject at the Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School is an evaluative portfolio because it emphasizes assessment and reflection carried out in a formative and summative manner. The portfolio assessment steps in the Tahsin kitabah subject consist of three main stages. The preparation stage includes identifying learning objectives, explaining them to students, and clarifying portfolio components. The Implementation Stage involves teacher encouragement, discussion of learning progress, and continuous feedback. At the Assessment Stage, criteria are determined with students, applied consistently, and emphasize self-assessment. The impact includes teachers' in-depth understanding of students' writing abilities, increased motivation, self-confidence, and active learning participation. This shows that the implementation of portfolio assessment at the Al-Hidayah Islamic Boarding School has proven to be effective in achieving Tahsin kitabah’s learning objectives.

Abstract

This article explores and analyzes the meaning of synecdoche, specifically, the forms pars pro toto and totem pro parte, as found in Surah Al-Baqarah. The study employs a qualitative approach, with the Quran as the primary data source. Data were collected using note-taking and free-listening techniques and were analyzed through the adoption of Lakoff's cognitive analysis technique. The findings reveal the presence of both pars pro toto and totem pro parte synecdoches in Surah Al-Baqarah. Examples of pars pro toto include references to parts of prayer (such as standing, bowing, dhikr, and prostration) representing the entire prayer, parts of the body (neck, hands, and face) representing the whole body, and parts of a place (Masjid al-Haram and Kaaba) representing the entire place. Conversely, examples of totem pro parte include references to the whole of a limb (finger) representing a part of it (fingertip) and the whole of a period (moon) representing a part of it (hilal). These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the use of synecdoche in Quranic language, highlighting its role in enriching the textual and interpretive dimensions of the scripture.

Abstract

This research aims to uncover how polyglots learn foreign languages, identifying both supporting and hindering factors in this learning process. The research method employed is a qualitative approach. The findings reveal that the model polyglots use to learn foreign languages involves studying one book in several languages. This method is the most effective and easiest way to enhance reading skills in various languages. Additionally, polyglots use several other strategies: they are unafraid to try, do not always rely on formal education, are persistent, seek productive habits, listen a lot, believe it is never too late to learn, seek communities or partners, find interconnections between languages, and adapt to their environment. Supporting factors for polyglots in learning foreign languages include having the talent for language acquisition, being motivated, and having the opportunity to learn. In contrast, hindering factors include an unsupportive environment, restrictive grammar, laziness, limited vocabulary, lack of focus, lack of commitment, and absence of clear goals in language learning.
