Abstract

Background: A character's personality shapes a compelling and high-quality novel. It not only drives the storyline and deep insights into human nature, emotions, and experiences, allowing readers to connect with the narrative on a profound level. Aims: This research examines the significance of the characters' personality traits in Khairani Hasan's novel "Garis Luka." Methods: This study is qualitative and descriptive. Hermeneutic techniques were employed to gather data, which was subsequently analyzed using Sigmund Freud's theories on character personalities (1901). Results: The research findings indicated that the aspects of a character's personality associated with the id (pleasure principle), ego (the conscious part of the personality that mediates between the id and reality), and superego played a significant role in novels. In this novel, the elements of the character's personality are well depicted, with 115 data points identified from the research. The character's personality was tied to the id in 61 instances, the ego in 36 instances, and the superego in 18 instances. Implications: This research can serve as a resource for developing more varied, creative, and innovative literary learning materials and enhance knowledge about novel psychoanalysis.

Abstract

Background: The information supplied by a victim of sexual violence during an investigative interview frequently serves as the sole foundation for investigators in processing a sexual violence case. Nonetheless, the investigative interview process often lacks professionalism due to efforts to impose the investigator’s personal assumptions. Aims: This research is a forensic language analysis intended to uncover the assumptions held by an investigator during an investigative interview with a child victim of sexual violence. Methods: This study utilized qualitative data obtained from the investigative interview between an investigator and a child victim of sexual violence at a police station in Cilacap. Conversation data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques. The statistics were subsequently verified with the investigator to validate their legitimacy. This study employs the dialogic speech act theory technique proposed by Weigand (2010) to elucidate the assumptions held by the researcher. Results: The findings of this study suggested that the investigator attempted to impose her personal assumptions on the victim through numerous exploratory speech acts designed to validate, offer options, and direct the victim’s responses. Implications: The findings of this study may serve as a reference in assessing the specifics of inquiries within the Standard Operational Procedure on Examination and questioning techniques during the investigative interview procedure.

Abstract

Background: The phenomenon of code mixing at Student Entrepreneur Islamic Boarding School of Nurul Islam 2 (PPME Nuris 2), especially in the AIQ program in which students are required to speak Arabic although they have not mastered all the vocabularies yet, so that the mixing code between Arabic and regional languages, including Javanese or Madurese, influences the dialect of every University student of this program. Aims: This research is expected to answer the questions about what influences the appearance of code mixing and dialectology, the process of forming code mixing and dialectology, and the influence of dialectology and code mixing on students. Methods: This research used a qualitative approach with a case study as its research type. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and triangulation around the Student Entrepreneur Islamic Boarding School of Nuris 2 using participatory observation, guided interviews, data triangulation, and sources. Results: This study revealed that the emergence of code-mixing and dialectology among students is influenced by internal and external factors, including their environment and personal experiences. This process is shaped by the diverse regional backgrounds of the students, their social interactions, and academic demands. Dialectology and code-mixing contribute positively to students' Arabic-speaking proficiency, as code-mixing is part of language acquisition, helping students develop confidence in speaking a second language fluently and accurately. However, it also challenges Arabic grammar, as excessive code-mixing can disrupt linguistic structures, making the language appear less formal and potentially hindering proper learning. Implications: This study makes significant contributions to socio-linguistic and ecolinguistic studies, especially regarding how social interactions and environmental factors influence the students’ use of Arabic. It deepens understanding of social dynamics that influence language, such as code-mixing usage in multilingual conversation.

Abstract

Background: The 'Ammiyah language is a variation of Arabic used in informal communication and daily conversations in Egypt, in contrast to Standard Arabic, which is employed in formal and academic contexts. New students encounter various challenges when entering university life, making the adaptation process more difficult. Aims: This study aims to analyze the challenges faced by new Indonesian students in acquiring the 'Ammiyah language in Egypt. Methods: This research employs a case study method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten new Indonesian students in Egypt. Results: The findings indicate that new students experience several difficulties in acquiring the 'Ammiyah language, including (1) dialectal differences between Egyptian 'Ammiyah and the previously learned Standard Arabic (Fushah), (2) difficulties in understanding informal vocabulary and expressions in 'Ammiyah, and (3) psychological barriers that hinder their adaptation to using 'Ammiyah in a new environment. Implications: The results of this study are expected to provide insights for educational institutions in designing more effective 'Ammiyah language learning programs for foreign students in Egypt, as well as assist students in overcoming challenges related to acquiring the 'Ammiyah language in a new environment.

Abstract

Background: The rapid integration of digital technologies in secondary education has transformed English as a Foreign Language instruction, yet effective implementation remains uneven and highly contextual. While prior studies often focus on access or technological competence, less attention has been given to how teachers adapt pedagogically within real classroom conditions, particularly in regional Indonesian contexts. Aims: This study investigates how EFL teachers adapt their instructional practices in technology integrated classrooms, examining forms of implementation, contextual factors influencing adaptation, and teachers’ perceptions of instructional effectiveness. Methods: A qualitative multiple site case study was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Palu and SMA Alkhairaat Palu in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Ten EFL teachers were selected through purposeful sampling. Data were collected through semi structured interviews and classroom observations between March and May 2025. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six phase framework, integrating inductive coding with theoretically informed interpretation. Results: The findings indicate that technology integration operates as a dynamic process of pedagogical negotiation rather than linear adoption. Teachers reorganized lesson structures, modified digital tasks in response to classroom contingencies, and recalibrated instructional decisions when facing infrastructural limitations. Professional experience influenced adaptive flexibility, with more experienced teachers demonstrating greater capacity for instructional redesign. Although digital tools enhanced student engagement, their effectiveness depended on deliberate scaffolding and pedagogical orchestration. Implications: This study advances a process-oriented understanding of pedagogical adaptation in technology-mediated EFL classrooms. The findings underscore the centrality of teacher agency and reflective judgment in sustaining meaningful digital learning environments. Professional development initiatives should therefore prioritize adaptive expertise and pedagogical reasoning rather than technical skill acquisition alone.

Abstract

Background:  Vocational students often struggle to understand English texts that are complex and not related to their daily lives. In Eastern Indonesia, the lack of culturally relevant materials can reduce engagement and comprehension. Integrating local wisdom into reading materials can bridge this gap by connecting learning with students’ experiences, supported by schema theory and culturally responsive pedagogy. Aims: This study aimed to identify vocational students’ needs for English reading materials incorporating local wisdom in Banggai Laut, Central Sulawesi, and to examine how cultural elements relate to students’ reading challenges, learning needs, and preferences. Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design within a needs analysis framework. The analysis of target needs (lacks, needs, and wants) was informed by Hutchinson and Waters, while learning needs (input, procedures, teacher roles, learner roles, and settings) were based on Nunan. Twenty students from SMK Al-Hajar and SMK Negeri 2 Banggai participated during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through a 33-item Likert-scale online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean scores and percentages to identify dominant response patterns. Results: The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties with complex sentence structures, technical vocabulary, and factual texts lacking cultural relevance. They reported strong needs for vocabulary support, culturally familiar topics, visual aids, and teacher guidance. Students preferred reading materials related to local folktales, coastal life, traditions, and regional history, and favored activities such as independent reading, small-group discussion, summarizing, highlighting keywords, and strategy modeling. Implications: Mapping students’ target and learning needs prior to material development is essential for vocational contexts. Incorporating local wisdom can support more engaging, comprehensible, and contextually relevant English learning aligned with students’ cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

Background: Human communication, whether spoken or written, is fundamentally structured around clauses, with verbal clauses holding particular significance. This is equally true in literary works, where the complexities of verbal clauses given their varied types and functions are prominently displayed. Consequently, investigating these clauses is essential for a deeper comprehension of syntactic structures. Aims: This study aims to identify the types of verbal clauses based on their internal structure and their position within sentences, and to determine their functions in the source text. Methods: Employing a qualitative content analysis method, this research focuses on verbal clauses as the unit of analysis. The data source is the short story "Imraatun Ghalabat Al-Syaithan," from Taufiq Al-Hakim's anthology Arinillah. Data were collected through scrutinizing and note-taking techniques, and subsequently analyzed using translational and permutational methods. Results: The analysis revealed two primary categorizations. Based on internal structure, both complete and incomplete clauses were identified. Based on syntactic position, verbal clauses were found that either hold a grammatical position (al-jumlatu-lati laha mahallun minal-'irab) or are syntactically independent (al-jumlatu-lati la mahalla laha minal-'irab). Functionally, the verbal clauses served to express renewal and occurrence (li tajaddud wa huduts), continuous renewal (li tajaddud istimrariyah), and permanence/stability (li tsubut). Implications: This study underscores the critical role of syntactic units in shaping meaning and ensuring effective message delivery. A nuanced understanding of clauses and syntax is fundamental for achieving grammatically accurate and precise interpretation of sentences, both in literary analysis and broader linguistic study.

Abstract

Background: The Russia-Ukraine conflict has generated an extensive humanitarian crisis in which media representations play a crucial role in shaping global perceptions of civilian suffering. While previous studies have shown that Western media tend to foreground Ukrainian victimhood and marginalize Russian civilian experiences, the representational practices of non-Western news organizations such as Al Jazeera remain underexplored. Aims: This study aims to examine how Al Jazeera represents Ukrainian and Russian civilians in its coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war and to identify ideological positioning reflected through linguistic patterns in the reporting. Method: The study employs a corpus-assisted discourse analysis (CADS) approach. A corpus of 20 Al Jazeera news articles published between 2022 and 2025 was analyzed using keyword frequency and collocation analysis, combined with qualitative interpretation based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and the concepts of civilian victimhood and empathy framing. Results: The analysis reveals a marked asymmetry in representation. Ukrainian civilians are predominantly associated with harm-related lexis and collocational patterns that emphasize vulnerability, humanitarian response, and demographic specificity. In contrast, Russian civilians appear far less frequently and are mainly linked to administrative or material damage descriptors, resulting in reduced emotional salience and narrative visibility. Implications: These findings provide empirical evidence that Al Jazeera constructs a hierarchy of civilian suffering that aligns with broader geopolitical narratives. The study contributes to corpus-based media discourse analysis by demonstrating how linguistic patterns reveal ideological positioning in conflict reporting and by highlighting the need for more balanced journalistic portrayals to support critical media literacy.
