Abstract

Abstract. Many contemporary stories reshape traditional hero myths to emphasize psychological growth and moral choice over physical triumph. This study examines how well Joseph Campbell’s monomyth explains the protagonist’s development in Makoto Shinkai’s novel Suzume. Using a qualitative method, Suzume Iwato’s untterances, interactions, and key events are analyzed through Campbell’s framework to map her journey onto the stages of Departure, Initiation, and Return. Findings indicate that Suzume progresses through most monomyth sub-stages but omits several conventional elements; refusal of the call, woman as temptress, and apotheosis. Her journey emphasizes internal change, trauma healing, moral responsibility, and emotional independence rather than external feats. The study concludes that Suzume represents a quieter, inward form of heroism and recommends that monomyth theory accommodate affective and ethical paths to transformation in contemporary narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts in Javanese acts found in sastra.org Website based on Searle’s (1969) classification and to explain their functions using Leech’s (1983) about theory of illocutionary functions. The data of this research consist of two selected posts published on sastra.org website, namely Sêrat Gugon Tuhon (2021) and Ngéngréngan Kasusastran Jawa (2024), which contain utterances reflecting Javanese cultural values, social etiquette, and moral teachings. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis as the technique of data collection and analysis.  The findings reveal that the illocutionary acts found in the data are dominated by directive acts, which function to advise, warn, prohibit, and control behavior within the Javanese community. In terms of illocutionary functions, the data show the presence of competitive, collaborative, and conflictive functions, while no convivial function is found. This absence indicates that Javanese myths primarily serve as normative and regulative expressions rather than as expressions of social pleasure or politeness. Overall, the study demonstrates that illocutionary acts in Javanese myths play a significant role in transmitting cultural norms, moral values, and social discipline through language, contributing to a deeper understanding of the relationship between Pragmatics and Javanese cultural traditions.

Abstract

Abstract: The intersection of race, gender, and religion creates complex and often invisible forms of marginalization for women of color in Western societies, especially Muslim women who face overlapping systems of discrimination that cannot be understood through single-axis frameworks. This study aims to examine how these intersecting identities shape both marginalization and agency in Leila Aboulela’s Minaret (2005), with a focus on the protagonist Najwa’s transformation from a privileged Sudanese university student to a marginalized domestic worker in London. Using a qualitative descriptive approach rooted in naturalistic inquiry, the study employs close reading techniques to analyze character dialogues, narrations, and internal monologues, utilizing the qualitative method of Miles et al. (2014) three-step analytical process of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis shows that Najwa’s identity as a Sudanese Muslim woman is deeply influenced by systemic intersections of racial hierarchies, gender roles, and religious marginalization that create unique forms of discrimination beyond individual identities. The findings show how her privilege in Sudan loses meaning within London’s racialized labor markets, pushing her into exploitative domestic work that reflects Collins’ “Mammy” controlling image while also limiting her agency through structural barriers. Despite systemic restrictions, Najwa shows limited agency through religious practices and subtle acts of resistance, though these are heavily constrained by intersecting systems that use her multiple identities to justify exploitation while erasing her complexity and humanity.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines the forms and negotiations of local cultural values in three Indonesian digital short stories: “Menggugat Dedemit,” “Sakka Dituduh Parakang,” and “Tembok Tanian Lanjheng.” Using narrative analysis, this study explores how plot, characterization, conflict, and symbols generate ecological, communal, and familial values. A qualitative-descriptive approach with close-reading techniques identifies narrative elements tied to sociocultural contexts. The stories articulate tensions between communal traditions and contemporary pressures. “Menggugat Dedemit” offers an ecological critique through the Javanese dedemit myth. “Sakka Dituduh Parakang” exposes the fragility of Bugis–Makassar solidarity when the parakang myth fosters fear and manipulation. “Tembok Tanian Lanjheng” depicts the breakdown of Madurese familial values due to materialism and land disputes. The findings show that cultural representations in these digital stories not only revitalize local wisdom but also reveal ongoing identity negotiations within transforming communities. This study underscores digital literature’s role as a critical medium for articulating and interrogating local cultural values in contemporary Indonesia. “Menggugat Dedemit” menawarkan kritik ekologis melalui mitos dedemit Jawa.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of historical and biographical contexts on the themes, episodes, and settings in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel The Secret Garden. The study aims to uncover the historical factors and the author’s personal experiences that underlie the novel’s composition, as well as their impact on the narrative structure of the story. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with historical and biographical approaches in literary discourse analysis. Data were obtained from the novel The Secret Garden, articles, books, and various relevant supporting sources. The data were analysed using the story grammar model proposed by Renkema. The results indicate that the novel’s central theme is individual transformation and healing through interaction with nature and the social environment. Historically, the novel reflects a shift in societal perspectives from the Victorian era toward the Edwardian era, which placed greater emphasis on children’s emotional and psychological needs. Biographically, Burnett’s personal experiences with loss, life’s hardships, and her passion for gardening also influenced the themes and symbolism of the secret garden in the novel. This study concludes that The Secret Garden serves as both a representation of the author’s personal experiences and a reflection of the socio-historical conditions of the early 20th century.

Abstract

This study examines the critique of capitalism in Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle (1906) by integrating critical Discourse Analysis, narrative analysis, and intertextual analysis. The research aims to investigate how capitalism is criticized through language, narrative structure, characterization, and ideological discourse in the novel. By employing a qualitative research design, the study analyzes textual data related to labor exploitation, poverty, social injustice, class inequality, and power relations. The findings reveal that The Jungle portrays capitalism as an exploitative system. It prioritizes profit over human welfare. As a result, labor oppression, economic insecurity, social inequality, social alienation, and workers' dehumanization happen. Through its characters, the novel exposes the contradiction between the promise of the American Dream and the realities of industrial capitalism.  Furthermore, the novel also demonstrates that discourse and narrative strategies function as instruments for revealing ideological domination and normalizing exploitation. Finally, in the novel, Sinclair presents socialism as an alternative form of social awareness and resistance. It is concluded that The Jungle serves not only as a literary work but also as a powerful social critique that remains relevant to contemporary discussions of labor rights, inequality, and capitalist power structures.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse of spiritual abuse in Claire Vaye Watkins' novel Gold Fame Citrus. It addresses the limitations of discussions of spiritual abuse in literary studies, particularly regarding the use of spiritual language and moral authority as tools of ideological control in dystopian narratives. The study aims to identify the root causes of spiritual abuse and analyze how spiritual language fosters obedience, authority, and psychological dependence. Using descriptive qualitative methods, this study applies discourse analysis and an intertextual approach to examine dialogues, narrative descriptions, and symbolic expressions in the text. The findings indicate that spiritual abuse is constructed through manipulative spiritual language, claims of moral authority, fear-based obedience, and psychological dependency. Moreover, in a dystopian society, spiritual discourse potentially served as, among other things, mean to legitimize domination and to maintain ideological power. Finally, the study concludes that language plays a crucial role in shaping belief systems and reinforcing symbolic violence through narrative discourse, thus contributing to discourse-based literary studies on spiritual abuse in contemporary dystopian fiction.

Abstract

This study examines human responses to environmental collapse in J. G. Ballard’s novel The Drowned World. The study aims to analyze the representation of environmental collapse and human responses to extreme environmental changes in the novel. This study employs a qualitative method using a text analysis approach and applies the concept of An Inconvenient Apocalypse, which views the apocalypse as a slow and ongoing process. Research data was obtained through an analysis of the setting, conflict, and character behavior, particularly that of the main character, Robert Kerans. The results indicate that environmental collapse is depicted through the submergence of major cities, extreme climate change, and the reemergence of prehistoric conditions. These changes not only destroy human civilization but also affect human psychology and behavior. Human responses in the novel are shown through various attitudes, such as preserving civilization, resisting change, and finally accepting and adapting to the new environment. This study concludes that the novel depicts the changing relationship between humans and nature as a result of an ongoing ecological crisis.

Abstract

This study examines the short story "The Enchanted Fish," adapted from the fairy tale "The Fisherman and His Wife" by the Brothers Grimm, as additional reading material for high school students. The story contains important moral lessons and uses many connotative signs (words, phrases, and sentences) to convey these messages to its readers, who are English language learners still improving their reading skills. This poses a challenge for students to understand the moral lessons and hidden information in the story. The goal of this study is to reveal the moral values and hidden information in the story using Roland Barthes' semic code theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through reading and note-taking. The data analysis follows the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). As a result of the study, it was found that the short story "The Enchanted Fish" uses connotations to convey deep moral messages about greed and avarice and their negative consequences. This analysis also evidences the complexity of the narrative text, which requires reading skills, especially in examining implicit messages and information. The results of this analysis can also serve as a useful reference for teachers in teaching narrative texts and helping students become more critical in reading and understanding stories. Thus, this study contributes to a better understanding of how narrative texts can be used to teach moral and ethical values.
