Abstract

The Madurese language is slowly shifting because many young people prefer Indonesian, Arabic, or English in school and daily life. However, pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) still play an important role in keeping the Madurese language alive. This study examines how santri (students) at Pesantren Al-Hikam, Bangkalan maintain the Madurese language by looking at their opinions, challenges, and solutions. The research used a qualitative method with questionnaires (75 students) and interviews with six santri and two ustadzah (female religious teachers). The analysis was supported by theories of language attitude (Holmes, 2013), domains of use and language maintenance (Fishman, 1991; 1997), diglossia (Berger, 1990), and social networks (Milroy, 1992). Results show that santri are proud to use Madurese and see it as part of their identity. They use it in family, friendship, and religious settings, but face problems with polite speech levels like engghi bhunten (high speech level means yes-no), peer pressure, and the lower prestige of Madurese compared to other languages. To solve this, pesantren rules, peer support, and personal efforts help them keep using Madurese. The study shows that pesantren are not only for religion and education but also help protect local language and culture.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the multifaceted concept of home as presented by Upstone in The Spatial Politics in the Postcolonial Novel, emphasizing its role as both a physical space and a metaphor for colonialism. Upstone posits that the home operates as an autonomous entity, possessing its own systems of authority and power similar to those found in nations and cities. Within this framework, the article examines the hierarchical relationships that exist in domestic settings, particularly between masters and servants, and between men and women. In Qaisra Shahraz's novel Perempuan Suci, these power dynamics are vividly illustrated, revealing a clear disparity between male and female characters. Men hold dominant positions in the household, while women, including daughters, are subordinated and often subject to oppression. The portrayal of these inequalities highlights the pervasive nature of patriarchal structures and gender politics within the home. Additionally, the article discusses how the relationship between masters and servants further exemplifies the oppressive dynamics at play, leading to practices that can result in violence. Ultimately, the analysis asserts that, despite being removed from external political influences, the home embodies its own complex political landscape, characterized by power relations that echo broader colonial discourses. This study underscores the significance of examining domestic spaces to fully understand the interplay of power, oppression, and gender in postcolonial contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

In the global hospitality industry, English plays a crucial role as a lingua franca to facilitate communication between diverse international personnel and guests. Although English exists in various accent varieties worldwide, initial observation within the context of hotels in Indonesia indicates a tendency towards the dominant use of English with an accent resembling American English (AE). This study aims to explore this phenomenon by identifying the linguistic characteristics of the observed accent and analyzing the underlying sociolinguistic factors. Employing a descriptive-qualitative approach based on observation and literature review, it incorporates a linguistic analysis of prominent AE pronunciation features, as well as a sociolinguistic analysis relating to external influences. Findings indicated that the accent used by personnel displays the characteristic of AE features, such as rhoticity and certain vowel patterns. Further analysis suggested that the prevalence of this accent is significantly influenced by extensive exposure to American English through mass media—a positive perception of such variety regarding comprehensibility and professional image as well as the potential influence of American English models in hospitality training materials. Albeit facing challenges of accent diversity in the multilingual environment, the tendency towards AE accent reflects the complex dynamics in the use of English as a lingua franca in the service sector shaped by the convergence of sociocultural and pedagogical factors.

Abstract

Madurese language is one of the major regional languages in Indonesia, with a rich linguistic system that makes it an intriguing area of study. It is an interesting language to study because it has a unique way of expressing meaning. In Madurese, one word can have several different meanings, and eventually different words can mean the same thing. Moreover, when it comes to talking about family relationships in Madurese language, things get even more interesting. The words used by the people in Madura to describe family members can change depending on the situation or who is speaking. On the basis of such issues, this article explores Madurese language with a specific focus on investigating the meaning relations within Madurese kinship terms dealing with three aspects: synonymy, antonymy, and ambiguity. The research aims to explore and classify the various kinship terms in Madurese into these distinct categories. By examining synonymy, antonymy, and ambiguity within Madurese kinship terms, this study seeks to uncover the underlying patterns and relationships that exist among these terms.Accordingly, the research design employed in this study was descriptive qualitative. In addition, to collect necessary research data on the meaning relations within Madurese kinship terms, a combination of observation, depth interviews, and questionnaires was employed. In analyzing the data, an interactive model of data analysis was applied, which includes data reduction, data display, and data verification/claim. The results of this study indicate that the three categories of meaning relations – synonymy, antonymy, and ambiguity – are prevalent within various family relationships in the Madurese community. Those categories of meaning relations exist almost in all Madurese kinship relation system, including in the upward lineages, downward lineage, upward oblique lineage, downward oblique lineage, and lateral lineage.

Abstract

This study explores the transformation of the protagonist in Wes Anderson's short film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023), through the lens of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic arc. The film narrates the spiritual and existential journey of Henry Sugar, a wealthy man who shifts from materialism to altruism after discovering a meditative technique that allows him to see without using his eyes. Initially motivated by greed and self-interest, Henry experiences a profound internal transformation that leads him to use his abilities for philanthropic purposes. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on narrative analysis supported by Ricoeur’s three-phase interpretative framework: explication, understanding, and appropriation. Findings suggest that Henry’s transformation embodies a significant ethical and existential shift, highlighting the film's critique of consumerism and spiritual emptiness. Moreover, Anderson’s distinctive aesthetic—marked by symmetrical compositions, pastel palettes, and theatrical mise-en-scène—reinforces the symbolic depth and moral trajectory of the narrative. This research underscores how cinema can be interpreted as a reflective medium that facilitates ethical contemplation and personal meaning-making through character development. Ultimately, the study affirms that The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar functions not only as artistic storytelling but also as a philosophical exploration of purpose, morality, and the transformative potential of self-discovery.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of elision in the vocabulary of the Bangkalan dialect of Madurese, a feature that reveals both systematic regularities and sporadic irregularities in its phonological structure. The investigation addresses the principles underlying elision that occur in a patterned manner as well as those that emerge unpredictably, thus pointing to deeper complexities in the dialect’s phonetic/phonemic system. The data were elicited from two native speakers of the Bangkalan dialect through structured interviews using an instrument originally designed by Nothofer and later refined by Laksono and Savitri (2009). The recordings were transcribed phonetically to facilitate analysis, after which the forms were closely examined to classify their elision status and taxonomy. The analysis identified seven types of elision-based phonological processes: apheresis, syncope, vowel cluster reduction, initial syllable reduction, apocope, final syllable reduction, and double syllable reduction. Among these, syncope emerges as the most influential, contributing to the proliferation of consonant clusters that distinguish Bangkalan Madurese from other dialects. Furthermore, the three reduction processes, initial, final, and double syllable reduction, play a role in shortening lexical items, thereby shaping a vocabulary that is characteristically more compact than that of other Madurese varieties. These findings underscore the interaction between systematic phonological tendencies and irregular developments, positioning Bangkalan Madurese as a dialect that simultaneously preserves, reshapes, and mystifies the broader landscape of Madurese phonology
