Abstract

A study of hadiths regarding tasyabbuh and the prohibition of qaza’ is relevant amid the rising trend of men’s hairstyles influenced by global popular culture. This study aims to analyze the meaning of hadiths on tasyabbuh within the context of qaza’ through the ma‘ānī al-ḥadīṡ approach by examining the text (matan), chain of transmission (sanad), historical context, and its relevance today. The method used is a qualitative approach based on library research, with the primary source being the hadith narrated by al-Bukhari, supplemented by references to classical commentaries and contemporary scholarly studies. The results of the study indicate that the hadith prohibiting qaza’ is authentic and emerged from a concrete social context as a guideline for ethical appearance. Linguistically, qaza’ means trimming part of the hair while leaving the rest, reflecting an aesthetic imbalance. Scholars classify it as makruh tanzīh, not haram, as it is not accompanied by a threat of punishment. The wisdom behind the prohibition includes neatness, preventing imitation of non-Muslims, and avoiding ostentation. In the modern context, hairstyles are no longer symbols of a specific religious identity; therefore, the interpretation of the hadith must be conducted contextually through the approaches of fiqh al-awlawiyyāt and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah. Thus, the hadith on qaza’ is understood as a guideline for ethical appearance that emphasizes balance, simplicity, and a proportionate Muslim identity, rather than an absolute restriction on hairstyle creativity.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of nikah siri (unregistered marriage) through the lens of the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah of Imam al-Syāṭibī by analyzing the conceptual framework developed in al-Muwāfaqāt. Although nikah siri fulfills the classical juridical pillars and requirements of marriage, it generates various contemporary socio-legal issues, particularly those related to the protection of lineage (ḥifẓ al-nasl) and honor (ḥifẓ al-‘irḍ). This research employs a library-based method with both deductive and inductive qualitative approaches to explore the maqāṣid framework and its application to the issue of unregistered marriages. The findings indicate that, according to al-Syāṭibī, the formal validity of the marriage contract does not automatically align with the objectives of the law when the practice produces social harm, such as uncertainty regarding the status of the spouse and children, the absence of legal protection, and vulnerability to exploitation. The publicization of the marriage contract (i‘lān al-nikāḥ) is understood as an essential component of maqāṣid because it preserves social stability and lineage. In modern contexts, state registration functions as a logical extension of this objective. Nevertheless, al-Syāṭibī allows exceptions for nikah siri in situations of genuine necessity (ḍarūrah) or urgent need (ḥājah) that threaten life, honor, or legal access. Thus, nikah siri cannot be normalized as a general practice; rather, it is justified only in limited exceptional conditions that still uphold the overarching objectives of Islamic law. Abstract

This article examines the Mapacakke’ tradition, which is alive and practiced by the community of Pangalli Village as part of their religious and social expressions in daily life. This study aims to uncover the values of the Qur’an contained within it. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, which seeks to understand the meaning of the tradition as experienced, believed, and interpreted by its practitioners. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders, traditional leaders, and community members, as well as documentation. The results indicate that Mapacakke’ is understood as a religious-social ritual serving to seek safety, bring inner peace, and strengthen social bonds. Its implementation involves preparation stages, a central ceremony consisting of collective prayer and the sprinkling of water, and a concluding communal meal. This tradition embodies Qur’anic values such as ta‘āwun (mutual aid), syūrāh (consultation), silaturahmi (social bonding), collective dhikr, and the reinforcement of tawhid, which are naturally internalized within the community’s cultural practices. Thus, Mapacakke’ represents the harmonization of local customs and Islamic teachings, and demonstrates how the values of the Qur’an are lived out and actualized within the socio-cultural context of the Pangalli Village community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the historical and political dynamics of the Muslim community in South Korea by highlighting the tension between Islamophobia and the state's inclusive policies. This study fills a research gap because previous studies tended to be partial and failed to comprehensively integrate historical, political, and social aspects. The method used was a qualitative one with a historical approach through literature review. The research findings indicate that although the state guarantees religious freedom and promotes Muslim-friendly policies, the Muslim community still faces discrimination and social marginalization. Under these conditions, the Muslim community develops adaptation strategies through identity strengthening, education, and interfaith dialogue. This study concludes that there is a tension between inclusive state policies and exclusive social realities, which drives the formation of cultural adaptation patterns and resistance within the Muslim community in the process of social integration

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of da’wah through the use of social media at the Khadimul Ummah Foundation in Kajang, Bulukumba Regency, as a response to developments in digital technology. The research approach employs a descriptive qualitative method with a sociological perspective, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the foundation has developed a hybrid da’wah model that combines traditional methods with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. The use of digital platforms has expanded the reach of da’wah, increased interaction with the community, and strengthened the image of the Islamic educational institution. Dakwah content is presented in the form of short videos, motivational messages, and documentation of religious activities. Despite facing limitations in human resources and facilities, digital dakwah remains effective through internal collaboration. This transformation demonstrates the pesantren’s strategic adaptation to the digital era without abandoning the traditional values of Islamic dakwah.

Abstract

This article examines the interpretation of aḥkām as a field of struggle between revelation, law, and power in classical Islamic tradition. The study focuses on the thoughts of Imam al-Māwardī (d. 450 AH/1058 AD), a qāḍī al-quḍāt who lived during the Abbasid political legitimacy crisis when the caliph's authority was eroded by the military domination of the Buwayhid dynasty. Through an interdisciplinary analysis of the exegetical work an-Nukat wa al-'Uyūn and the political treatise al-Aḥkām al-Sulṭāniyyah, this study demonstrates that al-Māwardī's exegesis was not merely an academic activity, but rather an intellectual strategy to maintain social stability and the continuity of the caliphate symbol. By comparing al-Māwardī's views with those of other exegetes such as al-Ṭūsī (Shi'a), al-Qusyairī (Maliki), an-Nasafī (Hanafi), and Ibn Taimiyyah (Hambali), this article reveals how the concepts of obedience (ṭā'ah) is constructed differently according to their respective theological-political contexts. Research findings confirm that the interpretation of aḥkām is a historical product that is never neutral from political interests, but at the same time offers an ethical-normative framework for governance. Theoretically, this study reinforces the argument that the interpretation of sacred texts always takes place within a specific social space and is colored by the power relations that surround it.

Abstract

(Isrā’īliyyāt) are stories and traditions of Jewish and Christian origin that entered early Islamic writings, particularly Qur’ānic exegesis and historical narratives which have become widespread tools of Da‘wah among Yoruba Muslim preachers. Their uncritical adoption has led to doctrinal confusion, the propagation of fabricated Hadīth, and distorted interpretations of the Qur’ān. These narratives have also reinforced superstitious beliefs, misconceptions about the infallibility of prophets, and blasphemous views regarding the Prophet’s Companions, thereby weakening the (‘Aqīdah) creed of many Yoruba Muslims. This paper examines the implications of Isrā’īliyyāt narrations on the belief system, theology, and religious practices of contemporary Yoruba Muslims. The study employs analytical and historical methods to trace the origin of (Isrā’iliyyāt), and examine its implications among Yoruba Muslims. The paper finds out that the narrations have shaped Yoruba Muslims’ theological perceptions and superstitious beliefs like reincarnation (akúdáyà) and stillbirth (àbíkú) have persisted as a result of (Isrā’īliyyāt-influenced preaching. The paper argues that Islam, as a comprehensive and revealed religion, rejects falsehood, fabrication, and superstition, and that Qur’ānic exegesis must be based strictly on authentic sources and sound scholarly principles. The paper recommends that Yoruba Muslim preachers and scholars undergo proper training in Qur’ānic sciences, Hadīth, jurisprudence, and the Arabic language to ensure accurate interpretation. The paper concludes that curbing the spread of (Isrā’īliyyāt) requires renewed scholarly commitment, intellectual discipline, and adherence to authentic Islamic epistemology, so as to preserve the purity of Islamic teachings among Yoruba Muslims.
