Abstract

Parental support is one of external factors that can influence students’ ’learning achievement.  Several studies have examined the influence of parental support on students’ achievement in learning Mathematics and Science subjects. A little attention has been given to English learning. To fill the gap, this study aimed to determine whether there is a significant influence of parental support on students' English learning achievement. The research method used was quantitative with an ex post facto design. The researchers selected 36 eighth-grade students at one of state junior high school in Riau Province, Indonesia as the sample by using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a questionnaire to measure the level of parental support, while students' English learning achievement data were obtained from scores taken from documentation provided by the English teacher. The data were analyzed by using simple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS version 20.0. The results showed that the calculated t-value was greater than the t-table value, (3.103 > 2.032),   indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant influence of parental support on students’ English learning achievement. The influence of parental support on students’ English achievement was 22.1%. So, it is suggested that parents should give their support to their children in learning English to make their children get good achievement in learning English.

Abstract

This study examines third-semester EFL students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) in the classroom using MacIntyre et al.’s (1998) WTC Pyramid model as the main framework. A descriptive research design was employed by administering a questionnaire consisting of close-ended items (5-point scale) and open-ended questions to 68 students in an English Education program at a public university in Riau Province, Indonesia. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively to identify general tendencies across the WTC layers, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically to enrich and explain the quantitative patterns. The findings indicate that students reported moderate to high willingness to communicate; however, their actual classroom participation was often constrained by psychological barriers (e.g., nervousness, fear of making mistakes, and fear of negative evaluation), linguistic unpreparedness, and unsupportive peer responses. Students’ readiness and state self-confidence were higher when interacting with familiar classmates and topics but declined in less familiar contexts. Although students demonstrated strong motivational goals related to fluency development and future opportunities, these motivations did not consistently translate into speaking behavior when situational barriers were dominant. Overall, the results support the WTC Pyramid model by showing that classroom communication is shaped by interactions among multiple layers. Pedagogical implications highlight the importance of fostering psychologically safe classroom environments and strengthening students’ communicative confidence to enhance WTC.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the level of self-regulation in English learning beyond the classroom and identifying the most dominant dimension among English Education students at State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. Quantitative descriptive method was used in this research. 129 fourth-semester students were the population of this research, and 60 students were selected with simple random sampling. Data were collected with questionnaire adapted from Zheng et al. (2016), covering six dimensions of self-regulation goal setting, environmental organization, time management, task strategy, help-seeking, and self-evaluation. The research findings showed that the level of student self-regulation was in high category. Most students (61.67%) were able to independently plan, organize, and monitor their English learning beyond the classroom. The most dominant dimension was goal setting (M = 3.22), indicating that students were able to set clear learning goals. However, some students still needed to increase their abilities of time management and self-evaluation. Overall, students at State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau had excellent self-regulation learning ability.

Abstract

Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in English learning. However, the eleventh-grade students at State Senior High School 1 Rangsang Barat, Kepulauan Meranti, still struggled to identify main ideas and detailed information, and comprehensively understand the text. The skimming technique is considered as effective strategy because it allows students to quickly gain an overview of the text and find specific information. This research aimed at finding out the effect of skimming technique on students’ reading comprehension. A quantitative approach was used in this research with pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 26 eleventh-grade students of class 1. Data were collected through multiple-choice test tested its validity and reliability. The results of analysis using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test showed a significant increase in student reading comprehension. The pre-test mean score 49.54 increased to 72.62 in the post-test. The score of significance of t-test was 0.000 (p<0.05), so H0 was rejected, and H1 was accepted. Thus, the use of skimming technique was proven to have a positive and significant effect on student reading comprehension ability, so it was recommended to be implemented in reading learning at Senior High School level.
