Abstract

The presentation of the story of Queen Bilqis in the Qur’an has sparked debate among Muslim scholars regarding women's public leadership. The majority of classical and modern scholars argue that the positive portrayal of Bilqis in the Qur’an cannot be used as evidence of women’s suitability for leadership roles, as this tradition is associated with non-believers. Only a few scholars use the positive image of Bilqis as an argument for women’s leadership capabilities, asserting that it is inconceivable for the Qur’an to depict something forbidden in a positive light. This study aims to reveal the Qur’anic ideology on women’s leadership, the pro and con responses of scholars to this ideology, and the factors that have led to the dominance of interpretations that prohibit women’s leadership. This research is a literature review with a feminist approach. Data were collected through bibliographic searches of Qur’anic exegesis from the classical to the modern era. The study shows that the Qur’an fully and unconditionally recognizes women’s public leadership. However, this gender-egalitarian Qur’anic ideology has not developed from the classical to the modern era due to power-knowledge relations that regulate, limit, and control the discourse surrounding women’s agency in the Islamic public sphere. The study recommends providing equal access to women in public leadership spaces

Abstract

The conservation of marine resources is an important issue in maintaining the balance of ecosystems and the sustainability of life on earth. The Qur'an provides clear guidance on human responsibility in protecting nature, including marine resources. This article seeks to reveal the messages contained in the Qur'an related to the ocean. The Qur'an emphasises the importance of maintaining the balance of nature (mizan) and prohibits destruction (fasad) on earth. QS. Al-A'raf [7:56] and QS. Al-Baqarah [2:30] emphasise the role of humans as khalifahs responsible for environmental sustainability. These principles include the protection of marine resources through conservation measures and sustainable management. Therefore, a friendly attitude towards the environment and sustainable utilisation is a shared responsibility. This research was conducted through a literature study using qualitative, descriptive methods, relying on deductive and inductive approaches and then analysed structurally and sociologically ethnographically. These findings underscore that marine resource conservation in Islam is not only an ecological obligation but also a rewarding act of worship. Implementing these principles in everyday policies and practices can help address global environmental challenges and ensure the sustainability of marine resources for future generations. The Qur'anic perspective on marine resource conservation emphasises human responsibility for maintaining the balance of nature and preventing damage. These principles are relevant to be applied in modern conservation efforts to achieve environmental sustainability

Abstract

Wasatiyyah thinking, or moderation, is an essential principle in Islamic teachings which prioritizes balance and tolerance in religious life. This concept becomes very relevant amidst the challenges of extremism and intolerance modern society faces. Muhammad Mahfudh Tarmadzi, a great Indonesian cleric, made a significant contribution through his work Is'af al-Mathali', which offers a moderate view in dealing with the phenomenon of takfirism, an ideology that disbelieves fellow Muslims. This research aims to explore Wasatiyyah Mahfudh Tarmadzi's thoughts, focusing on its application in overcoming the issue of takfirism. This research uses a text analysis methodology on Is'af al-Mathali's work to understand the application of balance, justice, and tolerance principles in responding to contemporary religious issues, especially takfirism. Mahfudh Tarmadzi strongly criticized the practice of takfirism, emphasizing the importance of solid evidence and a fair process in accusing infidels because takfirism often triggers conflict and violence among Muslims. The main aim of this research is to emphasize the relevance of Wasatiyyah Mahfudh Tarmadzi's thoughts in facing current religious challenges, especially in countering takfirism. This research also aims to examine Mahfudh Tarmadzi's contribution to promoting a more harmonious and peaceful religious life. It is hoped that the research results will provide in-depth insight into the importance of Wasatiyyah in building a tolerant society amidst the threat of extremism and radicalism

Abstract

The presence of the Sahaba and Tabi`in in the archipelago is proven by the discovery of grave sites and historical records that corroborate the Arab theory of the entry of Islam. The period of the Sahaba and Tabi`in was the period that received the best certification from the Prophet with the phrase "Khair al-Qurun". This hadith becomes the basis for the continuity of traditions carried out by the Moslim archipelago, which cannot be separated from the assimilation and acculturation carried out by the Sahaba and the Tabi`in. This research uses qualitative methods that are formulated in historical and interconnection aspects. The elaboration of this method is related to content analysis that correlates with the descriptive hadith of the Prophet about the virtues of the period of the Sahaba and the Tabi`in. The movement of the Sahaba as the successor of the Prophet and followed by the Tabi`in in spreading the mission of preaching Islam throughout the world was assimilated with the traditions that already existed in the region. The revitalization of the framing of the period of the Sahaba and Tabi`in in the archipelago is related to the understanding that the period of the Sahaba and Tabi`in was only in the Arabian Peninsula. The thought is dismantled in the facts and data that the period of the Sahaba and Tabi`in existed in the archipelago as a construction that the Moslem religion is now going straight with the teachings of Islam

Abstract

This research explored the relationship between Prophetic traditions and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the ethical implications and dynamics of human-AI interactions in the context of hadith teachings in the postmodern technological era. Involving an in-depth analysis of the Prophet's teachings regarding science and technology, this research aims to detail ethical perspectives that can guide the development and use of artificial intelligence. With an interdisciplinary approach, this research combined religious values with developments in AI technology, discussing the confluence between the traditions of the Prophet and current dynamics in the world of technology. Ethical implications from an Islamic hadith perspective were detailed, highlighting how moral and human values could be integrated into designing and implementing AI technologies. Additionally, this research explored the impact of human-AI interactions in the postmodern era, considering how AI technology could support the development of a society based on the Prophet's teachings and values. A comprehensive understanding of artificial intelligence's limitations, risks, and human responsibilities was also detailed to balance technological progress and moral values. Hopefully, the research results will contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between religious traditions, especially hadith teachings, and advances in AI technology, providing a solid ethical foundation for technological development in the postmodern era

Abstract

The history of Islam in Indonesia is often referred to as peaceful, friendly, and tolerant Islam. However, after the reformation in Indonesia, the Muslim community in this country experienced a shift in religious understanding that was quite serious to understand. Therefore, the important purpose of this article is to map the movement of religious understanding in Indonesia. This article is the result of library research, with a qualitative and philosophical approach. Data was obtained through reading various books, journals, and others related to the shift in religious understanding of Muslims in Indonesia. The data analysis technique in this study uses a three-step analysis procedure, namely: Data Reduction, Data Presentation, and Conclusion Drawing. The results of the study indicate that there has been a shift in the religious movement of Muslims in Indonesia towards Islamism, which is characterized by a strong desire to establish an Islamic caliphate or Islamic dawlah; enforcement of Islamic law; and jihad by fighting against infidels. This issue was then driven by the Islamic social movement both in society and in the world of education

Abstract

This study aims to explore the existence of israiliyyat contained in Tafsir al-Tashil li 'Ulum al-Tanzil by examining the verses of the story of Prophet Sulaiman in the Quran. The source of israiliyyat is essential to study in order to avoid deviant understandings that can damage the order of the creed of Islam and emphasize the interpretations that eliminate the kema'shuman of the Prophets. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study. Data were obtained through an interpretive method using the hermeneutic approach to understand the phenomenon of shifting meaning and semiotics to get the most optimal meaning. The results showed that the story of the Prophet Sulaiman was classified into five themes, with four themes considered as the category that provide information only, and one theme was considered as the category of israiliyyat, namely the interpretation in Surah Shad verse 34 by providing a rebuttal to the false story and cannot be used as a reference for interpretation. Ibn Juzay also quotes some israiliyyat stories without criticism and judgment as to whether to reject or accept their narration, which can be called tawaqquf. Nevertheless, Ibn Juzay's interpretation does not contradict the Qur'an and the Hadith, does not damage the order of Islamic religious principles, and does not eliminate the humanity of the Prophet Sulaiman

Abstract

Childfree has been a phenomenon that has attracted public attention since its emergence in 2013. There is opposition in society to childfree because it goes against human instinct and nature and Indonesian culture that understands many children's sustenance. This article investigates the childfree trend among Islamic academics, exploring their understanding of the hadith that explicitly encourages Muslims to multiply offspring by taking into account the social dynamics that influence this understanding and choice. The research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, through in-depth interviews with seven Islamic academics who choose to go child-free. The results show that in understanding the hadith they tend to understand it contextually. This leads to the conclusion that the hadith is a recommendation, not an obligation, for married couples who have mental readiness, physical health, economic stability, and desire to have children. Other things that influence this understanding are spousal support and the great challenges of educating children today. Despite facing social pressures, the informants maintained their commitment to being child-free but remained open to re-evaluating in the future. This study highlights the complexity of childfree decision-making, which is influenced by personal, social and religious factors
