Abstract

This study highlights the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT, in supporting the teaching of reading skills within the context of English Language Teaching and Learning (ELT/L). The primary focus of this research is on how the Helpful, Honest, Harmless (HHH) framework can be utilized to evaluate the trends and challenges of using AI in reading instruction. Based on a literature analysis, AI, especially ChatGPT, demonstrates significant potential to enhance reading skills through personalized learning approaches, active interaction, and immediate feedback. However, challenges such as algorithmic bias, limited access to technology, and risks of inappropriate content remain significant concerns. The HHH framework provides guidelines to ensure AI is effectively used to support beneficial, trustworthy, and safe learning processes. This study also offers recommendations to improve the responsible development and implementation of AI in the context of ELT/L education. Keywords: ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence, Reading Skills, ELT/L, HHH Framework.

Abstract

Abstract Many studies have discussed the EFL student's abilities in translating idioms into English. However, a few discussed the Indonesian EFL students' ability to interpret English idioms from a short drama scene. An investigation into this is considered significant since English is called an idiom language. Indonesian EFL students need to be able to interpret these English idioms to speak naturally, like a native speaker. Comprehending and using them with ease may indicate language competency, as they may be useful for improving students' communication abilities in everyday situations (Beloussova, 2015).This study intended to determine the ability of Indonesian EFL students to interpret English idioms directly from a short drama conversation. The study participants were in the fifth semester of the English Education Department of the State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The data was taken by asking them to watch the drama to listen to the conversation containing idioms and filling in a Google form to interpret them. Through qualitative data analysis, the researcher followed the five sequential data analyses (Cresswel, 2018). The findings revealed that most Indonesian EFL students are able to interpret English idioms from YouTube short drama conversations. They use the reduction strategy in interpreting English idioms. Keywords: Interpretation, English idioms, Indonesian EFL students

Abstract

Abstract Evaluating translation skills in students is challenging due to difficulties in maintaining fairness and providing proper feedback. This study examines the perspectives of college teachers on using translation rubrics to guide self-assessment and peer assessment among students. Interviews with two instructors from Politeknik Negeri Padang showed that rubrics are crucial tools for conducting fair and organized evaluations. These rubrics reduce bias and clarify what is expected by focusing on key aspects like translation accuracy, readability, and maintaining the original meaning. Both instructors agree that students assessing their own work and others' is beneficial because it enhances editing skills and increases their understanding of translation. Despite this, there are some challenges. People might interpret rubric criteria in different ways, time for assessment can be tight, and existing technology doesn't always meet the needs. Nevertheless, digital tools such as MS Word and Google Docs are considered helpful in simplifying the process. The study stresses the importance of having uniform rubrics and technological support to improve the teaching of translation and encourage students to become more independent learners. Keywords: Lecturers’ Perceptions, Peer Assessment, Rubrics, Self-Assessment, Translation Assessment.
