Abstract

This paper describes a contrastive study of the Philippine and Indonesian newspaper editorials in order to see similarities and differences in their physical size in terms of words and how Filipino and Indonesian editorialists utilized their discourse strategies through metadiscourse markers. To this end, 30 editorials of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Jakarta Post were examined through the lens of contrastive rhetoric analysis. The investigation of metadiscourse devices was grounded on the metadiscourse framework of Hyland (2005). Regarding the length of the editorials, the data revealed that the Philippine editorials employed more words compared to the Indonesian ones. The findings also show that both groups of editorialists used more interactional category, especially subcategory attitude markers in their writing, although the frequencies of the counts were different. The Philippine editorials contain more metadiscourse markers in all subcategories compared to the Indonesian editorials. The findings may indicate that as a genre, newspaper editorials have a generic feature of metadicourse markers, namely attitude markers. By using attitude markers effectively, editorialists make clear their stance on particular public issues and try to persuade readers to accept the opinion of the newspaper editors.  The study shows that newspaper editorials are reader-oriented texts.

Abstract

This research examined the rhetorical pattern of thesis background, particularly the undergraduate scripts of English education department students. The purpose of the study is to find out the tendency of rhetorical patterns by students in writing thesis backgrounds.  The approach used in this study is a qualitative method. The researcher investigates twenty English education undergraduate scripts from UIN Ar-Raniry and Syiah Kuala University. To collect the data, documentation of undergraduate thesis background was used as the instrument. The data were collected   from the electronic   repository   thesis  and  dissertation   from  both universities.  Then, the researcher examined the data based on the framework  of Swales’s CARS model (2004). The results of this research revealed that the undergraduate  students of English departments have similar rhetorical patterns in the thesis background. Furthermore, the research identified the cyclical pattern which showed that the students tend to repeat the cycle. Students tend to use the first language style that led the students to write circumstantially to deliver their points in the thesis background.  In conclusion,  the rhetorical  pattern of the thesis background used by students is compatible with the theoretical framework. Bearing the problems in mind, this research has implication on the students majoring in English Education to employ more effective rhetorical patterns in the background of undergraduate scripts crafted in English.

Abstract

Interactive video as one technology product provides an opportunity to enrich students' learning experience. The current study aimed to identify students' perception of interactive video utilization in English for tourism business classes and students' preference in applying interactive video in learning English for tourism business. The interactive videos were embedded in the learning management system, and the students had to utilize them individually. This study employed mixed-method research with an explanatory design. The data were gained through an administering questionnaire survey to 34 students majoring in the Hospitality program and analyzed using descriptive statistics by calculating the frequency of the answer to each question. Then, an interview was also conducted with several students to gain a further explanation of their learning media preferences. The results showed that the students perceived the interactive video positively based on its question layout, quality, and user interface. Furthermore, 94.1% of the students prefer to learn with interactive video than video. The students claimed that the interactive video helps them remember the learning material better, guides them to understand the material, encourages them to focus while watching the video, and makes the learning process more exciting. However, one student argued that the questions needed to be fully understood, and another highlighted the rewind button's unavailability. The result of the study indicated that the utilization of interactive video could be a beneficial learning tool in teaching English to the tourism business. In contrast, the English teacher or lecturer should also consider the students' freedom of learning.

Abstract

This library research investigates how picture series implementation effectively improves students' writing skills on different text types. Data were collected from journals published in the last ten years, from 2012-2022, and analyzed using content analysis. The results indicated that picture series effectively improve students' writing skills in descriptive, narrative, recount, procedure, explanation, and spoof texts. Even the picture series is helpful when applied to teach writing skills to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. A visual representation of events arranged in chronological order naturally provides the students with clues that can help them arrange and develop ideas in writing. Besides, the picture series stimulate the students' process of thinking and imagination to write the assigned text. Picture series also promote students' engagement and participation. In other words, picture series enables students to improve their writing skills and change their behavior toward learning.

However, some studies show that students face difficulties in their reading in several terms. These difficulties are twofold for English as a Foreign Language students who have to deal with reading and language content. In this respect, students must be able to self-regulate their reading activities in and outside classrooms. This study was intended to investigate the students' levels of self-regulated learning in reading comprehension. This study used a cross-sectional design with 40 English Language Education Study Program students at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. The instrument was a questionnaire adapted from Zimmerman's Academic Self-Regulated Learning Scale (2000). The questionnaire was distributed online to the students using Microsoft Forms. The data were analyzed using a t-test. The findings show that the ways both groups of students regulate their cognitive processes, motivation, and behavior within an educational setting are similar. Nevertheless, concerning that the fourth-semester students might be more organized SRL students than the second-semester ones, reading instructions must be structured to develop students' self-regulated learning. In other words, lecturers should condition the instructions to enhance the students' self-regulation
