Abstract

Healthcare facilities are very important for sustainable rural regions in developing countries. The Republic of Rwanda, in central east Africa, suffered massive social conflict in 1994 between the Hutu and Tutsi. Furthermore the health problem happened in Burera District because of lack of a proper district hospital. Therefore, in January 2011, the Rwandan Ministry of Health and Partners in Health (PIH) opened the 140-bed Butaro Hospital in the Burera District of Rwanda. The paper-based research was conducted based on hospital’s architecture of Hatmoko, et.al. (2010). Analysis was made with based on the secondary data of Butaro Hospital. Lastly, primary data gathering would be conducted if the funding allowed. The Butaro Hospital was an affordable solution for healthcare problems in rural regions of the developing countries, especially the infectious diseases (such as: HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, nose-ear-and-throat disease). Sustainable innovative solutions for minimum infection were implemented such as: external corridors, large-radius-low-speed fans (with diameters of 24 feet), high-louvered windows, germicidal UV lights, and non-permeable-continuous flooring. The construction of the hospital also would reduce the impact of political crisis in 1994. The project created 4,000 jobs for local craftsmen and local residents. They were initially trained for manual excavation, construction, and project management, before involving in the hospital construction. Therefore, the Butaro Hospital supported the smart regions of Burera area. Keywords: Sustainable and affordable hospital, participatory design, local material

Abstract

Human civilization had been through along with the evidence of history. The city of Malang has its own history which been proved by its buildings as the eyewitnesses. As a part of Indonesian History, Malang contributed to colonialism era in which colored this nation efforts during the independence through its buildings which became the evidence of what happened. The existence of these buildings were important for the record of history, not just political stories but also how did people acted in it. Ignorance of these could erase the history of Malang, in which could stop the transfer information about what did Malang. In this case identified and re-constructed history of Malang is needed to re-built its identity. Through this agenda by historical-description hoped Malang Identity could be found and the building form could re-arranged through its character. If this action done, development of Malang city would be synergy with its own history and identity. Keywords: conservation, history, colonialism

Abstract

Pedestrian ways are a means to protect pedestrians from the dangers of motor vehicles. However, due to poor arrangement, safe, comfortable and difficult to access cause pedestrian ways become less regular and segmented, causing conflict in the utilization of space.Pemuda street Corridor is a strategic commercial corridor, becoming a shopping center and economic center in Magelang City. In 2011, the road corridor development was conducted, ie the non-motorized lanes were integrated into the pedestrian ways so that it became wider. This led to conflicts in the utilization of road spaces such as misuse of pedestrian paths into motor vehicle parking areas, and road bagiantation problems that caused a gap in the number of pedestrians in the area. This study found that factors of utilization of pedestrian ways in influential commercial corridors on Jalan Pemuda are convenience, accessibility, land use and activity, safety and regional identity. The purpose of this research is to find the characteristics and factors that can influence the utilization of pedestrian ways in the appropriate commercial corridor in order to solve the problems that arise so as to maximize the utilization of pedestrian ways in the area. The method used in this study is a qualitative deductive method. The method used to find problems in the field then made the framework of research and process it quantitatively to determine the qualitative results. Keywords: pedestrian ways, street, commercial corridor

Abstract

The good city is an indication of good process of urban planning. In the planning phase, there is a simulation process about how all kinds of urban elements are related, and also have good synergistic between one another. Tunjungan, as one of the city blocks that formed the image of Surabaya, is an example of dynamic development. The big gap between ideal arrangement and real conditions can not be avoided. Partial development of it is one of the reason. This study is the identification of the gap between good city condition that expected by the planners, against the real condition in the field. The result will show which urban elements are lacking, but potentially can be fixed. The final findings are some guidance to develop Tunjungan block more synergy with the purpose of initial planning.

Abstract

Given the condition that there is very limited discussion about Juhani Pallasmaa ideas, this study aims to discover substantial overview of Pallasmaa selected writings. This study was conducted by extracting five key writings of Pallasmaa and then complemented it by others’ writings, which also focus on Pallasmaa’s notions. The findings show that Pallasmaa ideas can be devided into several topics which are multisensoric architecture, technology and computation, cultural and historical based considerations, contextualization, and imagination in architectural design.

Abstract

The narrow land in big cities such as Jakarta, increases the amount of high rise building, especially multi-storey office building. Office building consumes much energy to provide air conditioning to meet the thermal comfort inside the building. On the other hand, the building shape, building envelope, and building orientation to the sun's position are the main factors in building design aspects that affect the amount of cooling load. This study aims to investigate the impact of the aspect ratio or the ratio of the longer dimension of an oblong plan to the shorter, on external heat gain of multi-storey office building. Variables examined include the transparent and solid area of building envelope, the total area of the surface of the building envelope in any orientation, and the volume of the building, as well as the influence of those proportion on the external heat gain. This study uses mathematical calculations to predict the cooling load of the building, particularly external heat gain through the walls, roof and glass, as well as comparative analysis of models studied. The study also aims to generate the design criteria of building form and proportion of multi-storey office buildings envelope with lower external heat gain. In Jakarta climatic conditions, the result on rectangular building plan with aspect ratio of 1 to 4 shows that the external heat gain did not differ significantly, and the smallest heat gain is found on the aspect ratio of 1.8. Results also showed that the greater aspect ratio, the greater reduction of external heat gain obtained by changing the orientation of the longest side facing east-west into the north-south, about 2.79% up to 42.14% on the aspect ratio of 1.1 to 4. In addition, it is known that in same building volume, changing the number of floors from 10 to 50 can improve the external heat gain almost twice.

Abstract

Housing development needs to be supported by particular guidelines issued by authorized institute for the achievement of development feasibility. Community participation as the main actors and users also took an important part for housing development to fit the target. Community disappointment is often caused by results that do not match the desires or not according to standards. The aim of this study was to find the preferences of the community related to the housing environment to be occupied, so it can open the new possibility in planning and designing the housing environment. This research uses exploratory qualitative and grounded theory method. Data collection is done through an open-ended online questionnaire and shared freely (non-random sampling). The collected data was analyzed qualitatively using the content analysis methods. The result showed that the five aspects that become the preference of residential environment (5 PRE) namely: environmental comfort, environmental facilities, environmental infrastructure, location and accessibility, building and residential environment design.

Abstract

Various influences toward West Sumba traditional house’s morphology are affecting the way its exterior appearance has formed. Despite their exterior uniformity, each of these houses is showing different spatial configuration. Spatial configuration is a product of certain social processes. In other words, different society will produce different spatial configuration. Meanwhile, it is believed that space syntax method could be employed to elaborate objectively particular social phenomenon by examining its spatial configuration. Based on that, this research attempted to identify the genotype in those houses to reveal the social phenomenon occurred. Core and territory are parts of several factors that potentially represent a cultural pattern in certain society. The result revealed that these houses are in fact sharing same spatial patterns. It is strongly indicated by core and territory pattern comparison. Four of the five samples are showing a strong genotype, while the left one is showing a genotype differences. In addition, there is a fact that this house with different genotype is located in a village that exposed to modernization.
